Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

I can see the message that they're trying to get across, but call me crazy; I don't think I would let my kid play with my iPad in the first place. She could be sending redicilous emails or transferring my money to Russia lol

Where are her toys??

My almost 2 year old plays with my Ipad and our Iphones all the time. He has his own folder with apps from PBS that he loves.

I think it's pretty awesome actually. Im sure the child has plenty of toys that are age appropriate as well.

I agree. I also would be concerned with radiation from these objects, and young children. We dont know the stats on this yet since they are so new.

I dont have an IPAD or Iphone, but if I did I would not let my young child play with them. I think we are headed down a bad road with these things, honestly, at such a young age. My DD is 3 and I still would hesitate to have her use any of these things. There is plenty of time for that in the future. JMO

I don't think anything wrong with it as long as it does not replace fine motor skills like thumb/pincher grasbing motion.

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

I don't think there is any reason for a child that young to be using an ipad. I understand some games and apps for older children, but a 1-year-old should be exploring her world, playing with real toys, and turning the pages of real books.

I personally don't think it's a cute video at all. I think it's sad that technology is replacing books and toys for many kids. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a huge influx of children needing OT for lack of fine motor skills in the future.

I agree. I think it's extremely sad that this child doesn't get to turn the page.

Shame on her parents.

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

Playing devils advocate for a minute but in a true experience...

My 2 year old has her own tablet. She knows the difference between a book and her tablet. She loves to read real books and use the tablet for educational and tv stuff.

At 1 year old, not sure how much they are using it.

Now, while i can see how technology is replacing books, this is a whole different generation just like how we were kids, we would have to go to our friends house to see if they were home to talk and play outside.

My 2 year old loves her tablet. The love affair start at 1 and half where she played with the phone. She was a natural at it so she has her own. It was the best money ever spent as she has learned so much from an ANDROID apps.

My DD is way to smart for her self and all that see her thinks she is 3-4 with the way she acts and how smart she is. For that, i thank technology and parents constantly interacting with her and allow her to expand her knowledge.

ITA! That's how I felt when I saw it.

Also, I wouldn't let my kid play with my I-Pad because it's EXPENSIVE.

You would walk around with a lead helmet if you knew all the stuff that was flying through the air around you each and every second.... radiation from an iPad is the least of your worries.

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

I can't imagine letting my 1 yr old play with my iPad. Even at 2 I was nervous to let DS play with his kiddie apps on the iPad. When he turned 3 we got him a more age-appropriate tablet. However, that never replaced the books that he loves and reads constantly, or the other toys he plays with.

I think that's a parenting issue, not a "detriment to society" issue. Kids should be exposed to all kinds of media. If you're not comfortable with your kid using electronics I completely understand that - but I get the feeling that this kid doesn't get much exposure to other methods of play, and I would hesitate to make any generalizations about iPad use in toddlers or any other electronics.

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

I think it's kind of funny but I disagree with several posters AND the person who shot the video..

The parent (I'm assuming) who shot the video said she thinks a magazine is an ipad that doesn't work and for the rest of her life that's what she'll think. I don't think that's true and while I get her point, I think it's kind of silly to assume the kid won't appreciate a magazine for what it is at some later date in the future..

When I bought my Nook, the girls in my book club were outraged and still.. I just don't get it. What is the big deal if a child learns to read a tablet or a book? They're still learning to read - isn't THAT what's really important? My DD loves to play with my Nook because I have a few children's books on there for her.. and the Nook reads them to her. I still read her a story from an actual book at night. But at least with my Nook I've never had to tell her "sorry, we can't read that story anymore because the book has fallen apart." Because that has happened more than once in my house!

FWIW, I don't let my 15 month old DS play with my Nook.

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

is it totally out of the realm to say that toys are evolving which therefore begs the question of why would a child playing with an iPad be so crazy?

i would think if it's not the only thing they play with and they still get out and run around and do other "kids stuff" it shouldn't be a big deal.

for example, we, as kids, watched tv. maybe to our grandparents this made no sense because when they grew up they didn't have tvs. we're none the worse for ware because we watched tv, right?

i think this is similar...

You're right it is similar. But, seeing my brother and sister and this generation that was raised on TV and video games- it's a little scary. They never go outside and play and do active kid stuff. Instead, they play games that show people doing active kid stuff on a computer screen in front of them.

Thats just bad parenting... im sorry. I dont have kids, and never want any. But growing up I had TV, Video games, computers etc... i still was very active and playing outside with friends etc. Its the parents that allow their children to just sit and play video games.

Getting back to the point though, i have to agree with one of the PPs here. learning to read on a tablet vs a book... there is no difference. it may actually promote MORE reading because there are endless amounts of books available instantly as opposed to what you can store on your shelf.

It's amazing how good kids are with technology. My little 6 year old niece loves to play with DH's iPhone, and she told me that she couldn't believe that I know how to text message...as if it's something only kids know how to do. Chat Icon

i do agree with this a bit.... we have to practically force BIL to leave the house... we made sure he enrolled in Cross Country track at school... otherwise he would sit and play video games non stop...the only reason we let it happen at all is because hes doing excellent in school and got into all honors classes this year...

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

I won’t let AJ play with touch screens for long periods of time. I feel like I’m depriving her of real life interactions.

I *DO* have apps on my phone and we do have a tablet loaded with stuff for her. She RARELY sees the tablet, not that we hold it back but because we do other STUFF. My phone she’ll used occasionally to play games but we’ve moved those games in reality. A real puzzle is better in real life than a 7 inch screen. A real game of match is better than the phone cause mama can help.

Real games also let me teach her to clean up, set up, even create rules and enforce them. Imagination is also a huge part of real games. The computer games GIVE her the stimulation and surprises. In real life we make them up as we go.

I strongly believe in tactile sense of learning. Touch, feel, move, learn and understand. JMHO.

I know other kids at 3 using keyboards and mice. I don’t feel I’m doing her any harm. There’s time enough for her to get there. But as a toddler, I see no reason at all for her to ‘need’ it.

At one, no way. However, if there was a need (handicap etc) then its another story all together. Thankfully for them, this IS an option, ya know?

I agree with the PP, its funny and scary to see kids so wired in.

(FYI: I say this based on replies since I can’t open up videos at work – Ha!)

Re: Baby plays w mag like its an IPad

My dd is 16 months old and has played with my iPhone and iPad. She likes to make the screen move. She aloe loves books and knows how to turn a page. I don't think it's wrong for her to play with technology. And the other day a friend took a picture of her and then was showing her and dd was trying to make the screen on the camera move. It was really funny.

Times are different now. We are only moving forward with technology. Kids learn at a young age about technology. We had to wait a week to get pics now they are practically instant. We learned about computers before our parents did. It's just the world we live in. I don't think its bad.
This baby is only a year old. She is still learning.
