Asbestos???

Just wondering if you thought if there was asbestos in the floor of a levitt home? I am in the process of tearing up all the layers of flooring in my levvitt home. There are 3 layers of Linolium and then the cement floor. My friend seems to think I should be wearing a mask because as he says there is asbestos in the flooring. Do you think he is right?
Thanks,
Scott

Re: Asbestos???

My father in law said I need to pull those tiles up in order to put down the pergo flooring. I was reading on another website that you should leave Asbestos tiles alone if you can.....

From the Aritcle"Most people exposed to small amounts of asbestos, as we all are in our daily lives, do not develop these health problems. However, if disturbed, asbestos material may release asbestos fibers, which can be inhaled into the lungs. The fibers can remain there for a long time, increasing the risk of disease. Asbestos material that would crumble easily if handled, or that has been sawed, scraped, or sanded into a powder, is more likely to create a health hazard. "

I know the tiles need to come up, what do you think I should do?

Re: Asbestos???

We have tiles like this in our basement and want to do Pergo down there. We read the same thing and are nervous about pulling them up.

Let me know what you find out.

Asbestos is best left alone. As long as it is undisturbed you are better off.

Can you put a layer of something on top of the tiles and then put the floor on top of that? Do you have radiant heating? Usually with radiant heating they "float" the hardwood floor on top of another surface.

The size of the tiles will give you an idea if they are Asbestos or not. If they 9"x 9" - most likely they are asbestos tiles. If they are 12"x12" - they aren't.

Re: Asbestos???

They arent 12 X 12. They are prolly asbestos. I am going to buy masks after work, a spray bottle, and gloves....Leave the front door open and all the windows open......
My friend is going to come over and help me rip up the living room floor and the rest of the hallway....

Re: Asbestos???

We recently had our bathroom done and much to our surprise it was insulated from head to toe with asbestos. We had it tested and to have it removed cost us $1,000. It had to be removed since it was "disturbed". If you don't disturb it you can go right over it.

Either way wear a mask to be on the safe side. Also make sure you cover up your house. The dust particles are so small you can even see them and they could linger and attach themselves to your furniture for a long time.

Re: Asbestos???

If it is indeed VAT (Vinyl Asbestos Tile) be aware that the the glue (mastic) to secure it also may contain asbestos.

Although I don't recommend doing it yourself, most homeowners would and do use the wet method to remove household asbestos. Reduces the chances of particles that come loose traveling throught the air and into the lungs.
But it is hazardous waste and *should* be disposed of properly.

Re: Asbestos???

We have no furniture in the house right now.....The house is empty and it is a mess.

I am going to spray the tiles down with water, before trying to get rid of it. I have to get rid of it, or else the floor will be uneven....

In order to break up the two layers of flooring that is over the asbestos, I will have to remove the asbestos too...I am going to disturb it no matter what....

I will wear a mask and gloves too

Re: Asbestos???

Scott,
You don't need to remove them. we had tiles likethis is our house. We went right over them. Any that were missing we put an extra piece of the padding that goes under the floating floor(we bought the two in one moisture barrier and pad instead of separately. Also Home Depot has a sale right now until Nov. 21st on all flooring online

Re: Asbestos???

Scott- DO NOT REMOVE THEM!!!! thats what we were told when we had our floor done- to level it out just pour cement on top of the areas that need to be leveled- the floor is cement anyhow. and get very thick padding- very very important for a cement floor.

Re: Asbestos???

FYI....

I can't tell from the photo, but if you still have the original siding on your house, that is asbestos, too. When it is time to re-side, best to just go right over it.

I'm in a Levitt home too, in Jersey of all places and you would not believe what we have found in some of our renovations. Chat Icon

Re: Asbestos???

Well thank god the original shingle is gone...on the outside of the house. The owners replaced it with vinyl siding about 10 years ago.....All i gotta do with that is wash the siding.....I will have to wait on that.

We havent really found anything bad yet...The only thing I found other than the flooring, would be the crumbled sheet rock on the bottom of the wall near the bathroom...Thank god though it isnt wet now...but there was a leak there at onw time. We will cut the sheet rock and install a new piece there...

Re: Asbestos???

YOu can nail down plywood right down over it and place the flooring on top of the that. Thats what they do with most levitt houses even with the siding on the outside, its usually all abestos they side right over it.

This is what would be done with the floors that have abstesos.

Unless you are going to hire professionials which is big bucks
