Re: Are you givign your infant the flu shot?

I want to but right now he is only 5 months. It should be available when he turns 6 months but the nurse was concerned that it might not be available for the second round. Chat Icon So we are waiting and will play it by ear. But since he is in daycare I wanted to get it for him.

In the meanwhile I got one to try to help us all out. Chat Icon

My kids never had it before... until this year. DS is 3.5 and DD is 18 months and they both had the first shot 2 weeks ago. I decided to do it this year because DS is now in school.

Nope! I honestly believe that you can only vaccinate against so many things (beside the fact that there is more thermisol in flu shots than vaccinations). Plus, the CDC guesses which strain of flu is coming each season.

SOME flu vaccines have thimerasol. You can request the doc give you the thimerasol free ones.

I dont shoot my kids more than the required ones.

http://www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/thimerosal.htm

FDA's page on thermisol in vaccines.

Personally, we weighed the fact that the flu kills a documented 36,000 (According to the CDC) people in the US every year, versus the idea that thermisol might cause some problems, but people aren't sure. I'm not trying to sway anyone's opinion, just stating why we chose the flu shot.

I'm reading Dr. Sears' book on vaccines and he states that the flu kills only 50 people per year in the US.

I am not sure yet...I'll see what my doc says at DD's 4 month appt.

As for Dr. Sears...I'd take what he says with a grain of salt...I think he is a bit of a whacko....

I think I personally see more than that die every winter working in a hospital. These are elderly people and not kids, but it just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read.

The CDC states trhat anything with an * contains less than <3mcg of thimersol and mercury - That's what thermisol free and mercury free means to the CDC - I don't know about anyone else, but to me, free means nothing - no traces, or less thans...

Don't get me wrong - I am not about not vaxing my kids - I just think the flu shot is unnecessary.
