Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

I was reading in Baby Bargains that crib bumpers and comforters could be dangerous.

I picked out this adorable bedding but now am considering just getting simple crib sheets. The bedding set includes the typical fluffy crib bumper and bulky comforter.

i had bumpers on my crib but then got too nervous and took them off.

this time around i think i'll look into the breathable bumpers, this way the baby's limbs can't get stuck in the crib slats, but there's no risk of suffocation.

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

i'm not sure... on one hand, they protect the baby from the hard crib and getting their hands or whatnot from getting stuck in the grates. however, i have read lately that if they move to close to the edge of the crib in their sleep and their nose is right on the bumper they can suffocate. there are "breathable" bumpers that i have heard about on this board, but i have not yet looked in stores yet.

What is a breathable bumper?

I was reading up on SIDS and it sounds so scary. I just don't want to risk any unnecessary danger, especially just for my nursery to look cuter.

This is a very personal decision.

My DS is almost 19 months old and still has the bumpers on his crib, they never came out.

I had a cousin die of SIDS, he wasn't even in his crib when he passed away, so to me, I was ok using bumpers.

I never used mine. I got freaked out. DS was always all over the place in his crib.

HUGE waste of money for us!

we'll be using a bumper but maybe once the baby starts moving in their sleep we'll remove it.

I plan on getting them, but if I feel that they are a cause for alarm once the baby is in the crib, then I will take them out. All of my friends/ family members who had babies used them and their babies were fine, so I am not really scared by them.

They're in there now. IF I see it become a problem when he starts becoming more active I will take them out. But the first few months, he wont be going anywhere.

im not using them, too paranoid.. i bought breathable bumpers, they are mesh so the baby can breathe through them if shes up against them for some reason...and theyll keep her hands and feet in...
i found a woman who is making my bedding set custom, WITHOUT the bumpers, so i dont have to pay all this money for a beautiful set with bumpers that i wont use!! FM ME IF YOU WANT HER INFO!!

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

I think it depends on the child.

I spent alot of money on his bedding and was certain that I would never take out the bumpers. My son would smush his little face against them - I would see it in the video monitor and constantly move him away. I finally realized for my own sanity I had to take them out.

But, I'm sure when I have another child I will still buy the full bedding set - just because I can't resist! Chat Icon

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

BTDT dad here

We were paranoid about the bumpers as well, so DS never had any bumpers. When DD was born, I learned about the breathable bumpers. They are great for keeping arms, legs and pacifiers in the crib, but they can't shove their faces into it, and they also can't use them as a step to help them climb out (yes, this is a fairly common use of bumpers after thy learn how to stand....)

I always figured, I will never know exactly when DC will start rolling into the bumpers, or if they are a child that would shove their face into the soft ones, or decide to climb on them. You can never predict what or when you DC will do something. Why take a chance? They will never hit their head hard enough on the crib to cause any damage without the bumpers.

same for me as well.

I will probably keep them in for a while, then take them out when they can be dangerous... and put them back in once the kid is older to protect bumps and bruises.

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

We used ours with our first DD until we switched her bed to the day bed (2 years). We never had a problem. She was a real tosser and turner so I would think she would have had all kinds of bumps & bruises without them. We will be using them with this next baby as well.

It is a personal decision though.

The only problem with putting them back when they are older is that kids use them to stand on to help climb out of the crib so you probably won't want to use them then. As a PP mentioned - you never know when they decide to roll, pull to sitting, pull to standing in the middle of the night.

I had them in for a short time - but decided against them - for the above reasons. Plus my ped asked me to not use them as they are a SIDS risk. They have breathable bumpers if you are concerned about them putting limbs outside the rails.

DD was an extremely active baby and all over the crib and she really rolled and threw herself around and we never had any issues with her not having bumpers.

Much of this has to do with comfort levels - crib positioners, bumpers, comforters are all controversial and you will get 1000 opinions on them - so you have to make a choice that is right for you. I left nothing in the crib with my DD so I could sleep and not worry about what she would roll into.

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

I got a bumper only b/c it came with the bedding set. I'll probably leave it in the crib until the baby can roll over. Right now, I'm planning on using the pack 'n play at the beginning anyway so the baby may not be in the crib for a while. I plan to get breathable bumpers once the baby can roll over.

You would put the bumper in the crib initially just for aesthetic purposes, right? Since the baby won't be rolling over, the bumper wouldn't actually be protecting the baby.

I fell in love with this adorable bedding. The bumper is the cutest part.

I'm leaning towards not registering for the full set since apparently both the crib bumper and comforter are potentially dangerous. I probably won't register for it at all since the fitted sheet and dust ruffle aren't anything special.

Yes, it would just be for aesthetic purposes. I also don't plan on using the comforter in the crib. I'll probably hang it over the glider.

I had considered getting separate pieces, but the bedding I chose didn't sell certain items separately. I figured I might as well just get the set.

I only used them when he was tiny and then removed them when he started to move around. We then switched to the breathable bumpers and will do the same with this baby.

My boy are 2 and STILL have their bumpers in. I didnt lik ethe breathable bumpers, because my boys moved around too much as they got older, and it wasnt cushioned enough.

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

I didnt get a bedding set for this reason. I figured it was a waste to spend all that money on a set that we aould not fully use. We are not getting crib until we move in April & DS will be about 4 months by then. So we are just going to use simple sheets & the breathable bumbers.

Re: Are you getting a crib bumper? Are they dangerous?

We used them but DD used to be a heavy sleeper in the beginning(I'd watch her on the video monitor) and rarely move. By the time she was 10 months old she started moving all over the place and would have really hurt herself without the bumpers. We took them out at 18 months when she started using them to climb but other than that they were really useful.
