Are you changing travel plans related to Zika? (Non pregnant people)

Will the Zika virus have you re thinking plans to travel to the carribean, Florida etc even if you are not planning to become pregnant/ or are not pregnant.

Thoughts and why?

Eta: We would be traveling with our 2 kids possibly to the Caribbean or Disney. Would you reconsider? I'm not pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Re: Are you changing travel plans related to Zika? (Non pregnant people)

We had a Zika warning on our Bahamas cruise 2 weeks ago (plus 1 night spent prior in Florida). I didn't rethink for even a second. I'm just not a worrier that way I admit. It would take something really, really severe & imminently threatening for me to reconsider. I didn't feel Zika was on that level. I have traveled before with warnings of mosquito borne illness & crime & weather, etc. I take precautions. Bring bug spray & use liberally. Staying in well-traveled areas on sponsored tours, etc. Like I said, the threat has to be imminent for me to be scared. Otherwise, for me, I call it as the risk of living & travel.

Now I'm not pregnant. If I were, I might have consulted with doctors or considered my choices a bit further. I wouldn't have immediately canceled either but since being pregnant seems to increase the risk, I would've considered more rhan I did in my current situation.

Ok now I'm worried because in Bali my fiancé woke up with red eyes that were swollen and two raised scratches on his face that were oozing. I thought it was a spider bite. (We had a tarantula greeting us by the door of our hotel one night) was it Zika? I put cortisone cream on his face and he was better after 3 days.

Zika goes away right?????

Re: Are you changing travel plans related to Zika? (Non pregnant people)

I was thinking about going to the Carribean at some point later this year but nothing has been booked...I am just keeping an eye on the zika reports. I am one of those people who gets bit by mosquitoes a lot - I could go outside in June for two minutes and get ten bites, no exaggeration - and I don't really want to spend my vacation covered in both sunblock (I'm very fair) AND some sort of bug repellant. I had to do that in Bangladesh and it was annoying.

So for now, the idea of traveling there is still on my mind, but not as much. Maybe we'll go, maybe we won't. Since it was just an idea to head down there, I'm not upset or anything...also I'm keeping in mind how much the media loses their shit over stuff like this...no one is worried about ebola anymore and yet, it still exists out there! The talking heads just don't care about it anymore.

So basically - taking it all with a grain of salt.

No, death is rare and it is not too serious.

Of course, I wouldn't want to get it, but I'm not going to limit my travel plans because of it.

Re: Are you changing travel plans related to Zika? (Non pregnant people)

what are the risks to non pregnant people?
I thought it was pretty mild and only a real serious concern to an unborn baby?

I just saw a blurb on Today about this. They said it could cause Guilliam Barre syndrome which is an auto immune neurological disease.

They also noted, that the UK has some recommended precautions in place for men who have contracted the virus, or been in an area where the virus is present. They are recommending the man who was infected wear a condom for 6 weeks I believe it said, and if just in the area, 4 weeks. It can be transmitted to a female, and then stay in her body for up to 2 years which poses a risk if she gets pregnant.

My understanding is only really dangerous for PG people or people who may become PG in the near future.

So it probably wouldn't deter me from visiting these places. If I was PG or planning to become I would not travel to these locations.

I would get tested ONLY because you said your SO had some weird symptoms when you are in Bali. Not sure if it would still show up in his system, but I would have him call the doc! Especially if you are going to TTC before 2 years

I believe the risk is mainly focused on those who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. I'm neither. But I have 2 kids (approx 7 and 2) and we were planning on Disney, Atlantis or Turks this summer. So that's why I asking. Would you not plan that in light of the warning?

The 2 years is regarding people who currently live in countries affected. The recommendation is to wait one cycle after you return from affected areas before TTC. They say the virus can live in you for up to 10 days. According to what I read, once it's out of your system (around 10 days) , it's out and it's safe to TTC.

That's definitely not what this health person said today. She said they don't even know much about this virus, and they can't even say if and when it leaves the system. I think it's all really an unknown at this point since it's all so new.

So anyone who travels to these places can't TTC for 2 years? This will definitely cause a dip in the population growth!

Re: Are you changing travel plans related to Zika? (Non pregnant people)

This is from the CDC website.

Source

If a woman who is not pregnant is bitten by a mosquito and infected with Zika virus, will her future pregnancies be at risk?
We do not know the risk to the infant if a woman is infected with Zika virus while she is pregnant. Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for only a few days to a week. The virus will not cause infections in an infant that is conceived after the virus is cleared from the blood. There is currently no evidence that Zika virus infection poses a risk of birth defects in future pregnancies. A women contemplating pregnancy, who has recently recovered from Zika virus infection, should consult her healthcare provider after recovering.

Is it safe to get pregnant after traveling to a country with Zika virus?
If infected, Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for about a week. The virus will not cause infections in a baby that is conceived after the virus is cleared from the blood.

Well that's good!

I just saw something on HLN that pretty much contradicted everything the person on the Today show said this morning
