Re: Anyone have a portaco on the front of their house (over the front door)?

I have one! I have a two-story brick cape, and I thought it needed some character - - -so we had a portico built, with beadboard on the front and ceiling - plus columns supporting it. I don't have pics with me - but I have tons at home - what a difference! Plus, now I don't get soaked if it's raining and I'm fumbling for keys. I'll post pics tonight.

ETA - looking at your house, you could add a real "dramatic" effect by bringing the portico up to the height of the roof - and it would be super-tall!

I really want one but the quote we were given was like $3000 to build one since they would need to relay the concrete to build out the porch.

Thanks for the ideas and the pic...as for putting a round column in, wouldnt a regular general contractor do that?

Wow $3,000 that's a big quote! My DH would build it for us, he used to be a contractor so he can do what ever we want around the house which is a big $$$ saver.

ETA: I love your house, I love splits!

My sister has one on her house in oceanside. She has a cape that her husband blew out back and up. He built a foyer on the front and also added a Portico with the two columns...Its very nice.

Lisa:

They are so easy to replace. H/D sells round columns that are two pieces that snap together and can cover your existing column (I think they are coated tin). They come in different sizes, but you might have to cut them down a bit (with a sawz all) to make them fit perfectly. They also come with different top/bottom footings. I think they were like $100.00 a piece when we did them four years ago. They are a pain somewhat to snap together but they make a world of difference. I think they are in the woodworking area (where the doors, mouldings, etc.) are.

It makes such a big difference. I would love to do that to our house or to add a front covered porch....

I wish Chat Icon - then we wouldn't be looking to move! We're in Huntington Station now.
