Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

That's an HSG, right? I haven't personally, but I believe there are a few women on here that have. I just wanted to give you Chat Icon ! Good luck! From what I've heard it's not that bad. I believe they say to take some tylenol before hand and that you might have some cramps afterwards.

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I have had an HSG. It wasn't too bad for me because my tubes were not blocked.
I went in and sat on a large table. The doctor came in and swabbed my cervix and then put a numbing agent on it. Next he inserted the device that keeps your cervix open (I can't believe I can't remember the name of that thing..its gonna drive me nuts but its that cold metal thing the doc uses when you get a pap). After that he inserted a tube and then started pushing in the iodine solution. I got to watch the dye move through my tubes on screen and then I was done. The whole thing took about 10-15 minutes. Afterward you have to wear a pad because the solution will drip out and you might bleed just a little. Also, please know that cramping afterwards is pretty normal. My doc had me take pain relievers before coming in and then told me that I should not have any sex for 72 hours or I
would risk infection.

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I had an HSG test in July and was expecting the worst based on things that I had read. I read that it could be fairly painful with extreme cramping etc.

I took 4 motrin before I left for the test, the test itself took about 10 minutes and all I felt was minor cramping when they put the cathertor in my cervix and when they injected the dye and when it flowed through my tubes.

When it was done I was fine, went about my day. I think it may be somewhat more painful if you have blocked tubes, but mine was not bad at all.

Good Luck. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I had one...there is a lot of info on the Internet if you Google it. But basically they inject dye into your uterus and then watch it to see if it A) spills and empties through your tubes - meaning your tubes are not blocked or if B) the dye flows into your tubes and does not spill out - meaning you could have some blockage

I hope this helps!

ETA: Mine was painful but that was because my right tube was partially blocked. Also, bring a pad with you for after the test...you will have a little discharge and possibly some spotting, but not bad. Also take Advil before the test to help with cramping - if you even get any. IF they tell you to get an enema - you DONT NEED ONE!!

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I had one -- actually, I'm lying -- I'm one of the lucky ones that had 2. I took a prescription strength ibuprofen beforehand (thanks to the women on LIF) and I'm happy I did. The procedure was painful for me but that's because they found both of my tubes to be blocked and had me move into all different positions to try to push the dye through (with no luck). I felt very bloated afterwards -- for days, but I don't think that that is very common. I'm just one of the lucky ones. Chat Icon Most women find this procedure to be mildly to moderately uncomfortable.

My OB/GYN was on vacation when I found out my tubes were blocked, so another OB/GYN followed up with me (after my begging) and told me that my only option was to do IVF or adopt. This was over the phone while I was eating out at a restaurant. It was devastating. I researched like crazy on the internet and then booked an appt with RSONY. I told them I wanted to have a tubal cannulation and they wrote me a prescription. I went to StonyBrook Hospital, they hooked me up with an IV, oxygen mask, the whole bit ... and then they did an HSG before they started the procedure. Well, lo and behold he said, "both of your tubes are completely clear. we don't even have to continue.." He showed me the xray and sure enough, both tubes could be seen. This means they either cleared themselves out or were in spasm during the initial HSG. I'm happy I didn't listen to that moronic OB/GYN.

My advice to you is to not get stressed if they diagnose you with a blockage and if they do, to see a RE right away. Best of luck to you.

ETA: I didn't bleed or leak fluid afterwards, but they did tell me to bring a pad just incase.

The speculum!
The one that they used on me felt big and square and plastic - unless that was something that they put in after the speculum; I can't remember. But whatever it was, she cranked that sucker open and it didn't exactly feel good. It didn't hurt, but it was definitely uncomfortable. Especially since I had to put my legs down straight instead of keeping my knees bent.
Otherwise, that was the worst part. Very slight cramping, but not bad at all.

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I had one. My test was painful (the tech injected the dye then inflated a balloon to keep the dye in, he over filled the balloon that is why I was in so much pain...no blockages) even though I took some Advil before I went for the test. I was a bit crampy after the test.

Good Luck!

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I thought it was painful and my tubes were NOT blocked..this myth that it is painful because you have a tube blocked in wrong.
I was all clear and I didnt like the procedure, but so worth getting, so this way your RE can work with you and a diagnosis.

same here, I think it was the balloon expanding in my cervix that was the killer. But it is over quickly!

Oh yeah - and you get to watch the whole procedure up on a screen, I thought that was pretty interesting.

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

I agree Diane. Mine too was painful. Thankfully it was over in 5 mins. After like 2 I asked the dr if she was done yet. I felt some cramping afterward and had some blood clots. Only for the one night. THe next day I was fine.

Interesting. Mine was done by a random at a hospital. My RE did not offer to do it herself.

When I first went to Rsofny, I was immediately at ease with my Dr. there. When I knew I had to get the hsg done, I felt secure that she would be doing it. Instead I was sent out to a radiology place. I will always remember the coldness of the Dr. who did the procedure, however, thankfully it didn't hurt much ...

I actually conceived, right after my hsg. Dh and I asked I could have another one, just to see if perhaps it could help me again. We were told no, I hope my new RE has a different outlook.

I found this information for those who may be interested ....

A review of the use of lipiodol flushing for unexplained infertility

There has been speculation for decades regarding the role of flushing women's fallopian tubes in improving the chance of pregnancy.

More recent evidence has highlighted a possible specific role for lipiodol (ethiodized oil), an oil-soluble contrast medium, in the enhancement of fertility by these means.

Nei Johnson, MD, of University of Auckland and Fertility Plus, has conducted a systematic review, which was designed to assess the effectiveness of tubal flushing with various contrast media in improving the chance of pregnancy. The review was performed using Cochrane guidelines, including only data from randomized controlled trials.

Results confirm the effectiveness of flushing with lipiodol in improving the chance of pregnancy and live birth. Although there was limited evidence to suggest a possible benefit of oil- over water-soluble contrast media, the answer to this question remains unclear.

The specific groups who appear to benefit most from lipiodol flushing are couples with unexplained infertility, but particularly couples where the woman has endometriosis in the context of normal patent fallopian tubes. As a simple, low-cost, minimally invasive intervention that carries a low risk of complications and no increased risk of multiple pregnancy, lipiodol flushing may prove an appealing alternative to established fertility treatments for many couples

This happened to several people I know. I hope it happens for you too. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I've heard the same about HSGs too. RSONY sent me to a radiologist for my HSG and Stony Brook Hospital for my cannulation. Neither procedure was performed by my RE, however, I think she performs laps.

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

Holy crap!!! I do not care what anyone says, IT HURTS!!!!!!!!! Take all the drugs you can before and make sure they use numbing agents. My doc didn't use any and I thought I would die. I could not go back to work. It has been two days and I still have cramps from it. Just be aware. It is not easy and someone should go with you for moral support. Good Luck and I hope you have no blockages!!!!!

Re: Anyone have a Histosalpingogram?

My dh took me and I was in tears. Everyone told me that it wouldnt be bad, but ended up being awful. Afterwards,my dh usually takes me shopping (to make me feel better) and I told him I just wanted to go home and lie down. Now that I think of it he owes me a shopping trip. MmmmChat Icon
