Political party, gender and race don't enter into the decision at all.

I look at their position on all the issues that are important to me, such as those you listed and others, and choose the candidate that seems the most like minded to me.

if i *had* to pick 1 that was more than any other, it would be economy/taxes.

I picked economy but not because I think a president can "fix" it, in fact I dont think that's true at all. I am looking for someone who understands that there is no single policy that can "fix" things and understands the ramifications of certain policies, eg the housing "crisis". Some of these politicians want to do what most Americans think would help them (such as a mortatorium on foreclosures or a freeze in teaser rates on ARM loans) but most Americans also dont understand how the mortgage market is funded etc. and how certain things may hurt (potentially even devastate) the housing market in the long run.

ETA: gender/race does not play a factor AT ALL with me

I picked experience b/c any candidate can say they're going to do something about the economy/taxes, etc.

a proven long-term roll in the Gov't IMO speaks for itself.

I picked economy/taxes but I would have picked healthcare if it was an option.

For me it will be all of the above except gender/race. I will research how they feel and how they have voted, what their plans are and where they see the country going. I will be open minded and make a decision based on that. It's no secret i'm not a big Obama fan, but if he wins the nomination I will do my research and make an educated informed decision.

Re: Another election poll. No drama please

I piocked party because that encompasses many other important issues:

The war
Our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms
Healthcare
Gun control
Immigration
Human Rights
Foreign Policy
Services for the poor

ETA: However, if Mayor Mike were running, I would support him, though he's an independent.

No matter who wins the caucus, I vote my party because I believe in the issues it stands for the most. This year, I'm happy because my preferred candidate for the past 10 years is now getting the chance to run. Chat Icon

There is no one issue. Instead, I look for the candidate who best matches several issues.

Re: Another election poll. No drama please

1) Voting Record in Senate / Congress

2) What they stand for BASED on their voting record...NOT the BS they are all saying now to get elected.

3) Economy

4) Homeland Security & Iraq war

5) Full disclosure about how their campaign is funded and their tax returns disclosed to the public.

5) Other things, but these are my BIG five.

I voted for the economy/taxes. The war is important too, but that is so closely related to the economy, so i chose that.

the other issue that is HUGE for me is the pro-life issue.... and not just abortion, but health care is so realted to this as well as dignity for the dying, etc. etc. Unfortunately, there really are NO candidates are truly pro-life, so although it's important to me, it's hard to vote that way.

I'm sorryChat Icon I was trying to get as much in the 5 spaces as possible.

I actually choose for a variety of reasons myself. Mostly the person's experience is my primary focus, and just who would be best for the job (and after this current administration, a baboon seems better...lol). The canidate's stance on taxes, education, medical research, and women's issues are also big ones for me as well. I'm a registered democrat, who does not always vote democrat...so party isn't an issue for me.

Was just wondering what others thoughtChat Icon

Experience, record and intelligence. However, IMO, all three candidates major candidates have these, so I will go with the one my party chooses.

It really makes me sick the way some politicians claim to be pro-life and they truly aren't. Setting aside the fact that they make no changes to the laws they say they want to change, they are also ofter pro-gun, pro-death-penalty pro-war. That is NOT respecting life. I feel that they manipulate people to get the Christian vote. I know many people who will vote one that single issue, but I can't help but feel they are being used.

I vote democratic. I'm pro-life, but I'm not anti-choice, if that makes sense. I am totally against abortion, but I also have reservations about legislating against it. I also think that even if I wanted to vote for "life" I'd still be better off with the dems because I feel on the whole, they respect life more, even if they are pro-choice on abortion.

I agree with this, that is why I said to look at voting records and I would say attendance records in the senate. Some candidates will purposely "not show up for work" on the day of an important vote so that their vote cannot be used against them in a campaign.

REMEMBER...Someone can "say" they are one way and vote the opposite.

I also think there are complexities to this that some people don't see. Some bill might be great ...but may include some weird add on that's negative, and the only way out of the catch 22 is not to vote. When the media spins it, it sounds like they did not bote on an importnat issue, or voted against something good, when really it's more complex. So when you read the bills, you have to go beyond the title and see ALL of what's included.

It's just part of how effed up our system is.

Re: Another election poll. No drama please

For the most part, this excerpt from a CNN blog sums it up nicely:

"I’m a Democrat. Big D. I like most things Democrats like. I like less guns in the hands of lunatics (and if you’re not a policeman or a soldier and you want a gun, then I consider you a lunatic). I’d like people dumb enough to want to ruin their sex lives to be able to get married, even if they are gay. And I’d like public schools to actually educate the kids, even if the kids are not mine. And yes, I’d like idiots who have unprotected sex in this day and age to get pregnant and have the right to not have idiot kids. I like government to handle big things like law enforcement, health care for people who can’t afford it, building roads and bridges, making sure there is a safety net for the old and poor. And yes, shock of all shocks, I’m willing to pay taxes so that stuff is paid for."
