Am I the only mom who doesn't let her kids play in the snow?!? UPDATE!!!

DD is 6 and has never played in the snow!! I just can't bring myself to allow her outside to "play" in the snow b/c I always fear that she will end up sick!!!

I do bring in snow in a bucket and let her play in the bathroom sink and when she was younger she played w/ it in her high chair.

She keeps asking and I say no! Am I the only one???Chat Icon

UPDATE:

Well after reading all the posts, it appears that I am in the minority, but not alone!

So thanks to all the "encouragement" I did send both my kids out in the snow (and wind) yesterday, and they loved it! Of course it was a PIA getting them dressed and undressed, as most of you stated, but they had fun!!

Let her play in the snow!!!

Its one of the best things when you're a kid...I couldn't wait to bring my boys in the snow!

Kids get sick from germs and viruses..not from snow....obviously if they are sick with a fever you don't want them out in the snow but going in the actual snow will NOT make them sick! Let her have fun!

I hope you don't think i sound harsh...I just can't understand not letting a child get bundled up and make a snowman or play for an hour or two. She will have a BLAST!

Last year was the first year - we officially let the kids out to play (ages 4 and 2) - they loved it - and now they can't wait to go outside and build another snowman.

It was actually alot of fun - just alot of preparation getting them bundled up and changed, warm bath and all. We aren't out there for very long - but their expressions out there are priceless!

When they experience it - guaranteed they will want to be out there again and again ! Sorry if this doesn't help!

Re: Am I the only mom who doesn't let her kids play in the snow?!?

DS who is 3 now played in the snow last year to the point that he was crying when I HAD to bring him in...this year we are just waiting for the winds to die down before we get out there.

It's a personal decision, but as a PP said, your don't get sick from the snow...

It IS A LOT of work, I won't deny that, but it is fun!! I love playing in the snow just as much as he does. DS#2 is only 1 and can't this year (I don't have a suit for him), but he will be out there next year!

Really? She would probably love it. (although, maybe she would hate it and then you are off the hook anyway!)

DD is 3 and we take her out to play in the snow whenever we have the opportunity. She loves it and she has never gotten sick.

I don't think you really can get sick just from playing in the snow-as long as they are bundled up.

You don't get sick from the snow, you probably get more sick from being stuck in the house all day! Fresh air is always good!

DD is 5 months and I am taking her out in it once the winds die down - I can't wait!

I could never imagine not taking my girls out in the snow. They can't get sick from going outside - you have to catch a bug (virus) to actually get sick so it could be a coincidence that they caught something on a playdate or school or the store and it happens to show up the day they go out. As long as you dress them appropriately in layers so they don't get frostbite and you don't have to let them stay out that long. I sorry I don't understand why someone would not take their child out into the snow at least once in a while. Is the only reason you don't take your DC out is because you worry about her getting sick?

I would let her play outside once the wind dies down.

Snow, cold, etc does not cause illness as PP have said. Create a childhood memory. Some of my fondest memories have to do with sleigh riding and building snow forts. You have to let a kid be a kid.Chat Icon

DD is 8 months and we took her out last night. It was only for 5 minutes, we plopped her in the snow and took a few pics! I think it took longer to bundle her up. Chat Icon But it was still fun!

Aww let her play in it! You dont get sick from being out in the cold - it's a myth. And if you bundle her up she'll be fine. She's going to have a blast!

Definitely let her! It's one of the joys of childhood. *I* dread going out there with DD, but I know how much she loves it. The fresh air is GOOD for them, too!

I would let her go out. The fresh air is good for them, and sometime it nice to just get out of the house and let some steam off.

Ds is almost 14 months and he had a blast, he actually cried when we brought him inside.

Re: Am I the only mom who doesn't let her kids play in the snow?!?

We didn't go out last year when they were 1 because I didn't have snow gear for them, but I'm planning on bringing them out today.
Playing in the snow is such a fun thing for kids, I can't imagine not letting them.
Let her play! Then when she comes inside give her some hot soup or hot chocolate.

Just bundle her up nice and good. Get ready with the Hot Chocolate and marshmallows for when you're done, right into a nice warm bath and some cozy pjs. Then snuggle up and watch a movie. Today is the perfect snow day Chat Icon

Re: Am I the only mom who doesn't let her kids play in the snow?!?

I would understand if she was an infant but at 6 yo, yes, let her go play in the snow. My best snow memories were as a child her age with snowball fights and trying to make a snowman with my dad and sister and my mom.

She does not have to stay out for hours. Like maybe 30 minutes at a time.

To be honest I hate snow and I hate being cold.
But having said that, you don't get sick from being cold, or being wet or going outside with a wet head like our moms and grandmas used to think.
You get sick from a germ or a virus.
Period.
My little one is too young for playing in the snow but when she is old enough I will let her.
