Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

WW new plan has free fruits and veggies (except starchy ones). The booklet says something about how people don't become overweight eating too much fruits and veggies.

So as i sit here eating my 5th fruit of the day, I wonder if this hew WW plan will work out for me? I still get amazed about the free fruit.

What do you think of the above statement then, agree or disagree?

i think its a slippery slope. while fruit is good for you, they contain a lot of carbs and sugar and of course calories. you should be measuring the serving size of your fruits and to me 5 is too much.

veggies on the other hand i think you get more bang for your buck with picking the right ones.

True

The book seems to show we can have 4 fruits and 4 veggies a day. I will have to ask this at a meeting. I too always considered fruit a carb.

While fruits do contain a lot of carbs and sugar, I can see what the purpose of the message is: you aren't sitting at Weight Watchers because you love fruits and veggies and that's all you eat. Most people (myself included) end up at Weight Watchers because they eat completely the wrong things.

If someone ate fast food, chips, and ice cream all day long and they switched to fruit and veggies all day long- they would probably lose weight (despite the fact the fruit has the carbs and sugar). It's just better for you than fast food, chips, cookies, cake, etc. I feel like the statement is geared more toward that group of people (which sadly, before WW used to include me!!).

I think as far the message goes- yes you can gain weight from eating too many fruits, but no, I don't think you'll become obese because you eat too many fruits.

Ohhh...good question!

I agree and disagree for many of the same reasons Colleen said. Most likely, you are not going to be extremely overweight because you ate too much broccoli. However, calories in vs. calories out as well as knowing your bodies macro nutrient ranges is so important. People think I am nuts but when I am tracking my food, I track my lettuce and veggies in salads as well. Carbs are carbs...fruits and veggies still "count" and I couldnt follow a plan like WW because they allow foods to be "free" whch in reality and actual nutrition theya re not.

I disagree. I eat mostly fruits and vegetables, but I eat more of it than I should. I am trying to lose vanity pounds, but those vanity pounds don't budge unless I am under calories- no matter what the food is- fruits and veggies included. HOWEVER, 100 pounds on someone who only eats mcdonalds and boxes of cookies compared to 100 pounds on someone who only eats fruits and vegetables would look completely different. Even if you are eating the same amount calorie-wise, your body is better off with just the fruits and vegetables and it will SHOW.

I believe the nutritional benefits you get from that bowl of grapes far outweigh the fewer calories you get from that "fat free" muffin.

I am not slim but when I load up on fruits and veggies, I

1) eat less fake food and crap
2) have more energy to move around

and TMI, but

3) I am more regular so therefore less bloated. I fit better in my clothes.

I think it's TRUE but only if you're eating the fruits & veggies INSTEAD of the junk food. If you're still eating the junk in addition to the veggies & fruits, it's not going to work.

The good heath guidelines of WW is to have 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Eventhough they are free, doesn't mean you should go overboard with them, you should stick to the guidelines of them.

Someone from WW was on Dr. Oz the other day and she did infact say they were "unlimited - as much as you want"

Im not sure baout the plan now but i did the core plan a while ago and then fruit/veggies were unlimited. Hence why I was 20 lbs heavier than now even at the "goal" weight they had prescribed for me.

Re: Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

While I suppose it's technically true that if someone ate too many bananas they could gain weight, I think the statement is valid and holds true the majority of the time.

1. The sugar in fruit is processed differently than the sugar in a Twinkie. It's healthier for you. So, comparing the two types of sugar is not really...an apples to oranges comparison Chat Icon.

2. Healthy foods are more filling and less addictive so most people don't get to the point of wanting or needing an extreme amount of them. I have always been able to stop myself from eating every apple in the house. I have not, however, always been able to stop myself from eating every cookie in the house.

3. Someone who eats a ton of fruits and veggies is probably eating them instead of something much less healthy which would lower the amount of calories taken in.

I love veggies but wish I liked more fruits. They sometimes don't agree with me.Chat Icon

Our leader said they were FREE, but NOT unlimited. That you have 3-5 fruits a day for free, the rest you count. And that veggies are always free (other than starchy ones) b/c they dont contain sugar.

I disagree. There was a woman in my WW meetign that gained weight during the process from eating too many green beans. Yup green beans. It was because she ended up with too many calories.

In the end its all about how many calories you are putting in your mouth.

I think you can- or I should say I think *I* can because my "full" point with fruit comes way before my full point with junk. So for a snack I can eat an apple and maybe some grapes, and be satisfied, but I could also knock off a whole bag of chips for a snack.

I am doing Simply Filling so I now only snack on fruits (and some veggies, I just wish I liked them more.)

My WW leader pointed out that it's important to listen to your body- when you feel full, stop. Any more is too much and can lead to gain.

I went 12 years ago, but when they started counting carrots and onions in points, my leader (whom I loved) used to say, "I didn't get to be 290 pounds because I was eating carrots"

Re: Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

I look at WW as an oversimplified plan for people who want a no-nonsense approach to losing weight and getting healthier.

But for all the reasons listed, there are other considerations once you start looking deeper into their plans. I learn something new about food all the time, how to eat, and how my body reacts to what I eat. It can be overwhelming.

I too was in the 'all fruits and veggies are good' camp until I read differently (here). Now I pick and choose what I eat, found a bunch that I like, and concentrate on that but I'm not up to 5 servings a day.

Re: Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

Google "negative calorie foods" --- there are long lists out there of foods that burn more calories being digested then they contain in them. It takes more calories to break them down/digest the fiber then the food contains. Many of the free fruits and veggies on the WW PP program are on this list.

I've been doing WW since January of 2010. I was doing it before and after the new program rolled out last November. So many people were skeptical and I am very active on the WW boards, a lot of people got mixed answers from their WW leaders.

Bottom line that I think has been the best advice anyone gave me, is that you have to find the right balance of free fruits/veggies for you and YOUR body. Some people have to stop at 5 servings of fruits/veg a day. Some people could have 9-11 servings a day (me included) and not have it slow down their weight loss. Also keep in mind that for people over 300 lbs WW recommends 9 servings of fruits/veggies a day.

I think what WW was going for was getting people to eat whole, healthy and unprocessed foods over processed snacks. So many people were chosing things like 100cal packs over an apple, when the apple is clearly far healthier for you. They wanted to lead people back to those more natural snacks, and I think the free fruits/veggies was a great idea.

If you are doubting it, you can double track for a week. I do this from time to time to make sure I am on target with my nutrients. I use sparkpeople.com which is free. You enter all your info and then you can do online food diaries. It breaks everything down into carbs, protien, fat, and smaller micronutrients and gives you ranges for each day. Even with 9+ fruits veggies which I tend to get in each day, I was still within my recommended ranges for carbs, calories, sugars, etc each day.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

Re: Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

I agree with the statement but my concern with it is this...It allows overeating. Part of losing weight is not only learning how to eat properly but learning when to walk away from the food. Yes they say keep it to 5 or 6 a day but most people who are overweight got there because they have a mental problem with food. So it's great that they are teaching you to reach for that apple instead of your 100 calorie pack or even your weight watchers 2 point bar. But I feel that it messes with people's head in thinking well it's 0 points so I can have this even if I'm not hungry. I know that's not the message WW is giving but I think people who have a mental problem with food can overdo it. They think well it's free and I'm in the mood to eat so why not? It doesn't help people get to a healthy mental outlook with food.
