A Pumped Breastmilk/Bottle Question

A friend of mine has an older Medela Pump In Style that she can give me (free of charge - so you KNOW i'm all over that)....but i have registered for Avent bottles (as before i knew she had that - i was going to get the Avent pump).

Should i scratch the Avent bottles?

Keep them on the registry and transfer the milk over using a funnel or something?

Keep both Avent & get Medela on there too - since i have no idea what bottle Chat Icon Emma will prefer??

Thoughts?????

she says the pump she has only takes the medela bottles - if i had to guess - it's about 8 or 9 years old...(though obviously, she could be wrong).

Or what you may want to do is pump directly into the Medela storage bags (you can attach them to the pump directly) and then pour the BM into any bottle that you like when you want to feed DC. That way, you can also easily freeze the BM as well Chat Icon

no worries - i didn't mention it! It didn't occur to me that maybe NOW the newer ones can take other bottles...but the old ones, maybe not so much!!!!

Very easy!!! You pump directly into them - they have a zip top, and you can freeze, stick in fridge, thaw them and then toss. PERFECT!!! Here is a link to them:

http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=384&f=3927

They sell them everywhere - BRU, BBB, Target, Wal-Mart. And just a suggestion, when you pump and freeze, lay the bags flat in the freezer - they take SO MUCH SPACE if you start storing them upright Chat Icon

JUST added them to the registry!

May i ask one more ???? - when getting a USED pump - what are the items i should buy new??? Is it membranes and valves? Is there a place to get that wire looking like stuff (that carries the milk itself)??

Jess - I have a Medela pump, and I can use other bottles aside from the medela ones.

I would get everything new Jess! The only thing you may have a problem with are the tubing. I was BRU last week buying extra breast shields, and asked if they had the tubing as well. I was told that medela does not sell them because they want you to buy a whole new pump. I don't really know how true that is though as I haven't really investegated it.

Mine's new obviously, but if you buy new breast sheilds bottles other than the medela ones will fit. DH had bought a bunch of 4oz evenflow bottles that fit on the breast sheilds.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - i had no idea what breast shields were - but i guess it makes sense....so the TUBING would be the only 'issue' - but i may even be able to score new tubing on ebay maybe....(from a vendor with 100% feedback, i'd trust)....

interesting!!!!!!!

thank you girls!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: A Pumped Breastmilk/Bottle Question

no need to change...I used a PIS and avent bottles (born free for #2)

I pumped into the medela bottles (I couldn't pump into the bags directly, b/c I would often get more than the 6 oz, have to change bottles and have to mix the two bottles to even the fat.

I poured from the medela bottle into either an avent/born free bottle or into a freezer bag

It's tough to find tubing...i even wanted to buy new tubing for #2, but had to buy it in a big pack...but that pack might be good for you - check the medela site.

Re: A Pumped Breastmilk/Bottle Question

I used to pump with the medella bottles or bags for fridge or freezer storage.

I used the Playtex drop-ins for actual feeding.

I would just transfer what I pumped into the bottle I wanted. Most of the time I pumped more than DS' milk serving.

Re: A Pumped Breastmilk/Bottle Question

I pump into the Medela bottles. I put them in the refrigerator to cool them and later transfer them to the storage bags to freeze. I have avent bottles. I haven't used them much yet, but when I go back to work, I'll pour the milk that I pumped into the Medela bottles into the Avent bottles.

You or your friend can try calling Medela and see if they'll send you new tubing. You can say that you used the pump years ago and there are issues with the tubing now. It's worth a try.

Re: A Pumped Breastmilk/Bottle Question

Just so you know, avent sells adapters for using their bottles with other pumps
