A "plate wall" in the kitchen...anyone do this? ***Updated with additional question.
We painted the kitchen a very light blue to open it up since it is so narrow. I am very interested in decorating one of the walls with blue and white plates in a sort of mosaic pattern like this:
Has anyone done this successfully and was it more of a pain in the butt than it was worth? Also, any idea where I can get a bunch of different plates like that where I won't break the bank. Im kind of mid-island and new to the area - not sure where I could go in terms of antique places that may have one of this and one of that. KWIM?
***Updated question***
Would you use all the same shaped plates or would you switch it up with other shapes as well? Ive been finding ovals and hexagons in addition to round. Thoughts?

Haven't done it but there is a pretty decent Home Goods in Port Washington. And Pier 1 should have a decent selection.

Great idea. I dont even care if the plates aren't worth a dime - just going for a look.

I think it's cute. I don't like the overlap on the first pic but I like them close set and a big mix and match. I'd wait to do it until I had all the plates I wanted. But I'd be scouring Marshalls, TJ maxx, dollar stores, yard sales to acquire them, you could probably get some really cheap too.

Yeah I think the overlap may be a bit much but I was more or less looking at colors. I wouldn't be doing a wall that big and it would have to be out of the reach of children. The kitchen is VERY narrow and I don't want to overwhelm it. Im scouring Ebay for a plate clock. I think I found one I like.

If you don't find one you love, they are really easy to make. You can get a clock kit from Michael's for a few bucks, drill a hole in the center of the plate and attach everything.

i have a plate wall but with shelves. You have to be careful and use wall anchors when putting nails in with the plate hangers. I lost a few plates when hanging them on the walls after the weight of them pulled on the sheetrock OR you just get tiny tea plates.

I think Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Kohl's is the best place to start. They usually have an open selection of plates.

Re: A "plate wall" in the kitchen...anyone do this?
I love plates. I haven't done a full wall but most of the rooms in my house have plates, even the bedroom and bathroom.
Mine are from all over: Homegoods/Marshalls Anthropologie (I think there is one in Glen Cove? I am not on LI) They always seem to have nice ones in clearance Target Goodwill!
Also in Tri-Couty Flea Market there is a good size thrift-store type spot- I got a terrific transferware platter there for $2.50 and a couple other plates for less than $2 each. You really have to take your time and it's hit or miss- but I will defnitely go there whenever I am on LI.

you can def find them at home good, tj maxx even garage sales and craigslist.
I love the look of the first one its more of a todays trend
the one where its all spread out, is very old fashined and dated
BTW you are going to need a ton of plate holders. I saw them for sale at the christmas tree shops and they weren't expensive

I dont have one but I had some great sample pics saved from a previous post. I think they're great and hopefully, someday, I'll get around to doing one myself! Image Attachment(s):

I do like the idea, but you said the kitchen was narrow and you painted it light blue to help open it up.
I would think that putting a lot of plates on the wall would only make the wall look more cluttered and therefore make the room look smaller - which seems to be the opposite of what you're trying to achieve?

It wouldn't be too many plates and I may even consider just doing a border around the top.

I think you should stick to all round, looks neater. mixing different shapes in makes it look messy
