Thanksgiving and Covid
Just looking for opinions please. No judgement.
So my older sister has a big family she is very consumed with. She gets help from my parents since there are 3 in college. My BIL doesn't have a side of the family so they are always with my parents and rely on them a lot. Also my sister makes the money and my BIL doesn't work much either so isn't much help with money.
My brother isn't married and no kids. He's a nurse and works a ton of hours.
My BIL won't get vaccinated bc he believes in those conspiracy theories. I have friends who won't get it either, but my BIL's reasons are a bit out there. My brother won't see them bc he has some PTSD from seeing so many deaths in the Covid unit when he was busy last year. He hardly sees my family too.
I feel like I am always the one trying to get everyone together and I'm the youngest. My parents don't like confrontation so they stay out of it and always trying to do whatever they think helps.
Last holiday for Rosh Hashanna my sister said she was getting the kids tested for school. Long story short my 9 yr old nephew the next day found out he had Covid so we all had to quarentine. My boys missed their first week of school even though my 12 yr old is vaccinated bc we didn't want to take a chance and had to cancel on my inlaws dinner the next day too and felt bad bc she made everything
Here's the thing... we decided to get my 10 year old son vaccinated last week. We want to get together for thanksgiving at my parents again with my sis and her family. My BIL won't get vaccinated and my sister's inviting all the older kids boyfriends and girlfriends who are also coming from big families before.
The next day my 10 yr old is due for 2nd vaccine and then we are supposed to go to my IL's the next day after. Should we go again and take any chances or just go to my IL's.
Sorry so long... I hate all this, but asked my sister and she doesn't care bc she has her family and my IL's also want us to be there for the holidays too.
***UPDATE***
Ok, did not mean for this to get out of hand, but put an update at the end. Like I said... I am not scared of Covid. Most of us are vaccinated and we understand we can still spread it. I just can't afford my 10 yr old to push back his 2nd shot, which he is due for the very next day. It's a very big family. Kids in college, BF's and GF's in college and big families. Just want his vaccine on time. I will do Thanksgiving with my IL's, which is smaller and after my son gets his 2nd then can see the big family.

All posts are going back 19 years so they are getting mixed in with all of the other posts that went back 19 years.
I would do what you feel comfortable with. There is no right or wrong answer.
I am not sure yet what we are doing for the holidays. DH refuses to go to my side of the family after my cousin ruined 2/3 last Christmasses with illness from his family (horrible stomach bug and then he came down with Covid 2 days after last Christmas, thankfully nobody else there did).

You could ask everyone to get a rapid test or buy a ton of at home rapid tests and have them take them.
We are seeing my BIL and SIL for the first time since Christmas 2018 - they live on the other side of the country and skipped Christmas 2019. I am somewhat apprehensive about going to my ILs and being around so many people unmasked. My DH and I just got our boosters and my MIL and FIL got theirs as well. I am not sure about the other going. My son will get his first dose tomorrow and just had Covid in October so that has eased my concerns a little.
I am honestly not too concerned about being exposed. I just don’t want to be stuck in my house for 10 days if I contract it. I’ve been trying to find data to support the 10 day isolation, but there is not enough new data for this. I keep finding stuff from 2020, which says infectious drops off at 5 days.

If your ILs are vaccinated then you should just go to both. I think you took all the necessary precautions, you vaccinated your kids, enjoy your holidays. Schedule to have your son or yourself tested after the holidays if you need extra assurance. But I don’t think it’s necessary.
Exposure for vaccinated seems to be a non issue in terms of mandates or quarantine rules.

Agreed. If you don't feel safe vaccinated, then I guess my question is- when will you EVER feel safe?
When will we ever have a normal holiday.
If the vaccine isn't enough to let you move forward with life, then nothing ever will be.
Covid will never be going away- it will be with us forever.

Agreed. If you don't feel safe vaccinated, then I guess my question is- when will you EVER feel safe?

If the vaccine isn't enough to let you move forward with life, then nothing ever will be.
Covid will never be going away- it will be with us forever.
That is what confuses me. First it was masks and social distance and then it was vaccines. How many vaccines will people feel comfortable living life? I can't imagine still living like it is March 2020. It will come to a point that some people are going to have so much anxiety over a virus that will never go away that they have under more control than in 2020.

Ding, ding, ding! I’m apprehensive about being around people unmasked as well. I can’t miss work for reasons that are long to explain. I have been exposed. The first thing that comes to mind is that I cannot miss work, not fear. If I have any fear, it’s fear of not being able to pay my bills.

Where I work requires masks and I wear a mask when I run errands. I don’t wear masks around my family or outdoors.
I honestly want to be done with masks, but my husband is prone to getting pneumonia from regular colds so even though he is vaccinated, I’ll continue to wear one to provide an extra layer of protection for myself and him.
I know it’s weird to want to protect others. I guess I could take the “well I’m vaccinated approach so who cares about him and his compromised immune system”.

Some people don’t understand this concept, you know, doing what we can if it may help someone else bc it might make us a little uncomfortable. It’s a foreign concept to few on here. I will wear my mask indoors for as long as necessary in a crowd if there is even a remote chance that it may help someone else.

Edited to say if you are really worried, why not go and get tested on a regular basis. At least people who do that KNOW they are not sick.

I'm saying this respectfully and not to be snarky because I really do want to understand how others think around this...I'm totally not looking for drama.
If you are still concerned even though you are fully vaccinated and most likely have a booster too- and even children are now eligible to be vaccinated- when do you think you will not be concerned?
Like what will be the tipping point to say- ok I feel back to normal now like I did in 2019?
Because i have seen people say they "aren't doing indoor dining....yet"

If you are still concerned even though you are fully vaccinated and most likely have a booster too- and even children are now eligible to be vaccinated- when do you think you will not be concerned?
Like what will be the tipping point to say- ok I feel back to normal now like I did in 2019?
Because i have seen people say they "aren't doing indoor dining....yet"

I’m pretty much waiting until spring. I just want to get through this Covid/flu season. I feel like by the end of January most adults/children who want to be vaccinated will be and then it’s really just riding out the sick time of year.
Like I said, I’ve done things like indoor dining and events. We’ve been on vacation. We’ve pretty much been living our normal lives, but I wear a mask at the grocery store. To me, it’s not a big deal to wear a mask in public. I don’t love it, but it’s a small inconvenience.
I’m also waiting for them to revise this 10 day isolation if you do get Covid. My son had Covid and was literally stuck at home for 10 days playing video games and watching YouTube. He was fine before we even got his positive results. 10 days is a long time to be stuck at home when you feel fine.

Honestly, we may never go back to the way it was in 2019. I may never feel safe in crowded places with unvaccinated and unmasked. Not saying everyone should feel as I feel, but unfortunately, that is where I am at right now.

Indoors - yes, I always wear a mask. The only two exceptions were weddings that I was in the bridal party for in June and July.
Where I work requires masks and I wear a mask when I run errands. I don’t wear masks around my family or outdoors.
I honestly want to be done with masks, but my husband is prone to getting pneumonia from regular colds so even though he is vaccinated, I’ll continue to wear one to provide an extra layer of protection for myself and him.
I know it’s weird to want to protect others. I guess I could take the “well I’m vaccinated approach so who cares about him and his compromised immune system”.
Some people don’t understand this concept, you know, doing what we can if it may help someone else bc it might make us a little uncomfortable. It’s a foreign concept to few on here. I will wear my mask indoors for as long as necessary in a crowd if there is even a remote chance that it may help someone else.

Yes, fully vaccinated. Whole family including my DS is as well. Maybe forever. Again, if it helps keep just one person safe to wear a stinking mask then I am more than willing to make myself a bit uncomfortable.

I watched the news yesterday and the question was about if you would have Thanksgiving this year with family. An older man, say in his late 70's, early 80's was SO real it was nice. He said he would be spending it with family and friends and that this is making everyone nuts (probably referring basically to the news who was interviewing him).
I honestly have never been worried. Have gone out without a mask since May when the mandates were lifted, except places I am required to wear one. Get tested weekly. Been to crowded places since May. Have seen friends and family since May 2020. But then, that is me. I am almost the only person whom I hang with on a regular basis that is not vaccinated. It doesn't bother anyone I have seen and I am never discriminated in any way or belittled, etc.
