Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding

RIVERHEAD - A woman on the East End is filing a claim against Riverhead Town Police over public breastfeeding.
The mom says she called police last week from Wading River to report her ex-husband was violating a court order.
The woman was waiting for officers in her car with her two children.

When police arrived, the woman was nursing and claims one of the officers told her to ‘cover that up,’ numerous times.
The woman is now planning to file a complaint with Riverhead Town Police to make sure everyone knows that public breastfeeding is protected under New York State law.

I was expecting to read that she filed a complaint because she was angered by public breastfeeding, not that she was victimized for publicly breastfeeding. And fwiw, I dont consider breastfeeding in your car to be public breastfeeding.

Good for her!

Hard to say. If she was very exposed and he felt uncomfortable and asked her to please cover herself I think it's not really so bad. He may have felt very embarrassed and just said it. If he said " cover that up" multiple times in a nasty tone, it's definitely messed up.

Even if he felt uncomfortable, that his problem to overcome and not hers. The law says it's allowed, she was well w/in her rights & he is supposed to uphold the law & apparently he doesn't even know the law.

(Assuming what she's saying is true, though I believe her bc why bother lying about this, KWIM?)

Does it say anywhere that the cop is denying the allegation? If more than one cop was there--instant witness(es).

Time to stop shaming women and start shaming the ignorant people who go after them.

I was thinking it's possible she was no longer nursing and her breast was exposed and he could have asked her to cover up. Maybe he was afraid of being accused of something, if she was exposed. Police officers have to watch every thing they say and do, so he may have felt uncomfortable for some reason we do not know.

eta- Read the comments on news 12... someone who says they know her wrote some very specific things that may or may not pertain to this complaint she has filed. Chat Icon What I read (if true) definitely makes this complaint questionable. Chat Icon

Cops always have to watch their backs, they are often targets for accusations from those looking for lawsuits unfortunately so this officer may have been trying to protect himself somehow.

Re: Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding

Here's the thing. It doesn't matter WHO she is, if she is crazy or whatever. If she was asked to cover up in relation to breastfeeding - that means as she is preparing to, during, or as she finishes nursing - than her rights were violated. Women have the right to breastfeed anywhere they are allowed to be, and this includes exposure of the nipple that is, as the wording goes, 'incidental' to the nursing. Period. Being asked, even politely, to cover up is a violation of that woman's right. It can and often does make the mother feel uncomfortable. And why is the comfort of the person asking her to cover up more important than her comfort as a nursing mother, and the comfort of her baby? And again, it doesn't matter who this woman is. Crazy people have rights, too.

I'm not anti-bfing or against anyone's rights. We live in a country where breasts are sexualized and yes it would be nice if that stigma was different and women could easily bf without anyone even blinking an eye, but it's just not like that. So I'm not saying that she shouldn't be allowed or the cop was right- just that if the cop was a foot away from her taking her report for a while and her nipples were exposed etc. I can see where he would be embarrassed. My dh, who is honestly one of the sweetest most polite guys ever would probably turn beat red and be mortified if he had to talk to a breastfeeding woman without a nursing cover for an extended time. Hopefully though as public bfing becomes more prominent and laws more enforced, little boys will grow up more accustomed to it and less embarrassed. So to me, it does depend on this guy's intention and delivery. If he was just embarrassed he should just get a slap on the wrist and let it be known that she has the right to bf- but you can't burnthe guy at the stake. Jmo.

I absolutely don't disagree at all. If he simply didn't know, and was not at all rude about it, then sure being taught what the law is and how to better handle the situation - and perhaps issuing a public apology to the mother - would be absolutely appropriate.

I can understand why, due to the sexualization of breasts in our culture, men feel discomfort. And n this situation the police officer didn't have the option to look away or go elsewhere because he was taking her statement and dealing with her. So, yes, if he politely asked her to please cover up simply because he didn't know better then he does not deserve to be burned at the stake. However, that doesn't change the fact that he was wrong and whether it's a lesson or some disciplinary action, it needs to be addressed.

I agree.

I meant to ask DH's uncle about this on Sunday since he is a Riverhead cop.

Suffolk mom files complaint over public breastfeeding

So saw this on new 12 this morning, doesn't amaze me!

People really need to get over the sexualization of breasts. It is a fatty sometimes droopy, sometimes perky round ball with a nipple on it! Who really cares????? In NYS I believe it is legal for women to be topless whereever a man can be!

Also last I checked, the child's head covers pretty much the entire boob... at least the parts that would typically be covered by a low cut shirt or bikini top.

I sat across from a friend at a restaurant the other day. Her child was hungry so she started BFing at the table w/o a cover. Not for one second did I see anything "inappropriate". Hell, I barely even saw cleavage! And if I didnt happen to look, I would have just thought she was cradling her child. Some people just can't handle others who nurse in public. Chat Icon

What an asinine case. The cop is wrong, period, end if story. Women are allowed to be topless in public, regardless of whether they're bf'ing or not. This law was passed years ago. The guy needs to get a grip. Good lord.

It's funny how people with illegal apartments should be shut down and run out of town because it's against the law and everyone is for being law abiding citizens yet in this case NOT upholding the law is perfectly acceptable.

Make up your mind folks!! Are we law abiding citizens or NOT?!

But YOU are not THIS woman. You don't know her or her mindset. All I can say is there are two sides to every story. Read the comments section of News 12, I read comments that make me question the situation. There are always people in the world who enjoy attention or lawsuits. Not saying this woman is definitely one of them, but I can't say she isn't either. I am curious how this will unfold. It's a tough job to be a cop. Police officers are unfortunately targets for people who claim to be victimized in many ways and deal with ALL types of people who may not always be honest, thinking clearly, etc. Some cases it's true and others it's not but it's never cut and dry when a lawsuit comes about against a police officer (or even a business), anywhere $$ can enter the picture.
