Teaching a 9.5 month old right from wrong?

I know I don't post often but I come here searching for advice all the time!

I have a problem I am hoping someone can help me with.

DD will be 10 months on the 23rd. She is a really sweet kid but lately she's been getting rough mainly with me. I have long hair and she will constantly try to pull it. She is cutting teeth like crazy, so for the past week or so she has actually been biting me on the shoulder.

I think part of it has something to do with the teething, although she has been sleeping great, eating fine, just seems to want to chew on everything.

My question is, how do I tell her no? I say "no" firmly when she does it, but I don't really think she is getting it. Either that or she's simply not listening. She does other things like go for the dog's water and I will say no and she will stop.

I do think she knows these behaviors are wrong and she is somehow testing me. I just don't know how to get the message across the right way.

How have you guys started to teach your DC's right from wrong?

Thanks so much!

Not much advice here - I'm in the same boat! My DS will be 10 months on the 30th - he's constantly taking toys away from other babies, pulling my hair, biting me...! Sounds like I have a little terror on my hands, but really he's very sweet, LOL Chat Icon

I think you're doing all we can do at the moment. Give a firm no, remove her from the situation and try not to give the bad behavior too much attention.

Chat Icon Good luck!

consistency is KEY, especially at that age. I know it feels like it's doing nothing, but trust me, she will get it.

also at that age, redirection is something you should do.

if she bites you, give her a firm NO and then turn her attention to something else, rather than turning it into a game where you put her back by your shoulder and she bites you.

put her on the floor or in a PNP or something.

DS has been doing this for months. He will be 11 months in a few days. I asked the ped and she said to keep saying no and he will get it. Just try to be consistent.

My Ds is the same age and going through this too. I think it is just exploration and curiosity. I've been giving negative behaviors as little attention as possible and distracting him with something else.

They are starting to understand the word "No" at this age, but their memory doesn't last too long. I don't think you can expect that they will remember it a few minutes later.

I was just consistent - the hair pulling thing, I actually yelled at him a few times b/c he really did HURT me Chat Icon
The biting thing I'd try to tell him no, but he'd laught at me. -

So now, I just put him down and walk away from him. - After the 2nd or 3rd time, he gets it.

He's almost 13 months now ........

Thanks so much for the replies!

She doesn't do anything to other kids, it's mainly me and sometimes her dad, but she and I are together all day long.

I hadn't even thought of putting her down
(removing her from the temptation) so I am definitely going to work on that.
