4th grade math problem of the day PLEASE HELP

This is one of the questions on Jordan's math homework and I can not figure it out(nor can she) I am NOT a math person.

A school has 14 buses. Each bus can hold 57 students. Kim says that the buses could hold a total of 795 students. Julie says that the buses could hold a total of 798 students. WITHOUT multiplying, determine which girl could be correct. On the lines below, explain your thinking.

Now I realize what the answer is 798 but how do you do that without multplyingChat Icon

Can't multiply to get answer or at all?

Quickly in my head I see 7 x 4 = 28 so answer ending "5" is wrong

Math was never my subject, but English was... so I'm wondering if it's a play on words and you can find the answer by dividing instead.

Divide 798 by 57 and you get 14.

Or you can simply rule out 795 because it's impossible to get a number that ends in 5 with 57 and 14 (without doing the math, this is a rule you just know).

Multiplying an odd # and an even # always results in an even #.

So the even number 798 is correct.

Could she write down that she knew it could not be 795 because 5 is not a multiple of 4 and 8 ?

I would add 57, I think that was the number, 14 times. Or, if you child can do long division, divide.

They JUST started to learn long division and my DD thought she should divide to get the answer but that division problem is beyond her skill set thus far. She was not allowed to multiply at all. Grrrrr, I hate math and this is only 4th gradeChat Icon

Add 57, 14 times. Also she could draw a picture. 14 squares (buses) with 57 circles in each (or something similar).

This.

Or, you can figure that any # ending in a 5 is a mulitple of 5. Since neither of the other 2 #s is a multiple of 5, neither is the correct answer.

This is why I always hated math.

Who the hell cares if you multiply? Give this problem to the school bus logistics people and let the rest of the world move on!!

I have buckle down. I think one of the main ideas is that on the NYS math test, they want the children to EXPLAIN how they get their answers, not just figure it out.

I believe this is the right answer. It helps reinforce certain rules of math, and if you know that a number that ends in 5 has to have at least one multiplier that ends in 5, it makes other math and estimating much easier.

The odd and even multiplication answer is also good. Another way of quickly determining if an answer could be correct or not.

It's not a "math" problem, per se, it's a math concept problem, hence the no multiplication rule.

They are trying to teach them to problem solve, not just multiply.

Re: 4th grade math problem of the day PLEASE HELP

You're supposed to divide. You can divide 795 or 798 by either 57 (# of passengers) or by 14 (the # of buses) and come up with the right answer which is 798.

ETA: I totally understand why they said you can't multiply. They are trying to show that multiplication/division are complentary just like addition and subtraction are.

Computer girl is correct.

Multiplying any # or #s by just one even # will result in an even #.

12*23 = 276 (even*odd = even)
1008*46 = 46368 (even*even = even)
49*21 = 1029 (odd*odd = odd)

This holds true even if you are multiplying more than 2 #s. If just one of those #s is even, the result will be an even#. This holds true only for whole #s.
