Spinoff to Kids

Is the number of children that you want a reflection of your family situation when you were a child?

I had 1 brother and would like 2-3 kids. I think growing up in a small family is part of the reason why I'd like a small family. We got a lot of attention and my parents weren't overextended when taking care of us. DH was the oldest of 4. He really enjoyed growing up with a lot of siblings and thinks it would be great to have 4 kids.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

My DH is the oldest of 3. He has a brother and a sister. He said he never really played with them, he doesn't talk to his sister now, so he would love only 1 or 2.
I am the first of 7, I love kids. I would want tons of them, but I also want to respect DH's request. He is an outsider looking in on my family, and he does not like it at all. The thought of buying that many plane tickets to vacation makes him ill. to always have a car big enough to fit everyone. He is a financial worrier too. I can guarentee that our kids weddings will not be paid for by us, but he worries about not being able to save properly for our retirement if we have to care for a tribe for all those years.

I do take comfort in the fact that my kids will have a ton of cousins.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

Yes.... I love the fact that I have 2 younger siblings. Now that we're older its so much fun when we are all home at the same time. It makes the holidays soooo much fun.

DH grew up as an only child (his dad has 2 much older children from a previous marriage that weren't really around). DH is adamant about wanting a large family or having kids around the same age. Until recently, I found holidays with his family painful bc it was just his parents and us. When he came home with me for the first time, he told me that he was envious of our family gatherings.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

my dh comes from a family of 3 kids, and i come from a family of 2. i dont think that influenced us. we always agreed on 2. we knew we could financialy handle two and we knew we wanted a sibling for our first.

I want three kids- and come from three siblings. It's absolutely related to my family situation. I loved having at least 2 people in the world that no matter what were there for me & me for them.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

I want two children and I am one of two so maybe, but I never really looked at it that way. I just want two children because I would feel guilty leaving one without any siblings . . . .

Re: Spinoff to Kids

No not at all..
I was an only child..and i hated it...BUT It has nothing to do with why we want a lot of kids. We just feel thats what we are here for, to raise kids and its a personal feeling....

Re: Spinoff to Kids

Partially. I was one of two.

At the same time, I want to be able to provide the best education (college) as possible for my kids. It's very important to me to give them as much educational opportunity as possible. My Dad never had a lot of money but he always put his money towards a quality education for my brother and myself. I don't see how I could financially afford to do that for more than two kids.

Also, I will always work at least part-time and can't see myself having the time or energy for more than two kids. Dh is 37 and I'm 35 and I can feel myself slowing down a bit more than ten years ago.

Third, we are older, and with our infertility issues, I honestly don't see the opportunity for more than two.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

I was one of two and want two, but because I have such a close relationship with my mom I think I would keep going until I have a girl, even if that means 3.

I would love 4 kids, its a nice even number. Unfortunatley, Im looking @ my age and we have been TTCing for a while and don't even have #1 yet.
I would love 2 kids. If by chance twins occur, maybe I will get my 4Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Kids

I am one of 4 and wanted 4 when I was younger. But since I got married at an older age than I anticipated, I think it will now just be 1, if any.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

in some way, yes. I have a younger brother and would not trade him for anything in the world, I want my chidren to have that, someone to grow up with, a best friend for life, not trying to sound morbid, but I won't be able to be with them forever, so when we are gone, at least they'll have each other to count on.

... I always know I want to have two kids, just recently I started thinking, a 3rd one wouldn't be so bad either, but we'll see if it's in the cards Chat Icon

It's a reflection of DH's big family, and the fact I always wanted to be part of one.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

I'm 1 of 6 and while a large family is appealing, I've given up hope on it. We're happy with 2, and would entertain the idea of 3.

Re: Spinoff to Kids

I am one of 6 & for that reason having only 1 child was nuts to me. I have 3 & I am content with that!
