1st ay of kindergarten - pack or buy lunch?

What are the other K mommies doing?

DS is very excited to buy lunch in the cafeteria but I have heard that lunchtime is short and the kids won't have enough time to eat after waiting in line to buy food.

Lunch from home. DD is pretty particular. Not so much picky..i'm sure she will eye the kids trays who buy lunch and if something strikes her she will ask me if she can too.

If they are open to buy, let them buy. I wish my DS would eat more school lunch. I love when I don't have to pack lunch. It makes the routine so much easier.

pack. Id check anyway, in my school, children in K are not allowed to buy the first 2 weeks of school while they get used to the routine.

The rest of the year, we mostly buy. Never had a problem with not having time to eat.

At our school the teachers ask that the Kindergarteners bring lunch for at least the first few days while they get used to going to the cafeteria, the routine, etc.

I would without a doubt pack on the first day. Too much going on, then to have to navigate the lunch line and scarf down the food, too much for a K student on the first day IMO.

Our school suggested that the k kids bring lunch the first month at least. DD brought the whole year, but now in first grade she wants to buy. I told her for the first week I will pack her lunch and also give her money to buy, and she can decide after the first week (or two) what she prefers.

1st ay of kindergarten - pack or buy lunch?

My son ate school lunch since day one. Packing school lunch wasn't a habit I wanted to commit too. I discussed it with him and always went over the menu with him. But his school does half days the first week.

Im pretty sure the norm is to pack lunch for the kids.

I'm not really looking forward to an added chore of packing lunch every day - but I'm going to do it the first few days and see what he prefers.

If he would rather I pack it, I'll do that, of course.

Packing lunch. The lunch time is short & it'll take a while to go through the line. Plus they have an 8 digit code they need to punch in...all things delaying him actually eating. Not to mention the menu makes me want to puke.

This, in nyc the lunches seem neither appetizing or healthy.

That's not what the op is asking. She's talking about timing with the confusion of being a new student.

. Um, not sure why this deserves an eye roll. School lunchs are notoriously gross.

Because it could come off as offensive to those people who feed their kid said gross school lunch.

My son survived a year of school lunch but he does go to private school where it's outsourced. However, I survived NYC school lunch and would still not pack lunch if he went to public school. My son eats plenty healthy when he is home and healthy snacks I pack for school.

OP I doubt anyone on here will say they feed their kids school lunch. It does depend on the school as far as time. In my DS's school we order the food before hand so he doesn't have to choose that day unless he swaps for a bagel.

Also even if you decide to switch after several weeks it will still be an adjustment as they will be used to eating their own lunch and it would be new for them to go on line to get their food. I always explained to my DS what would happens during his first few days of kindergarten.

This is what we were told as well. I will be packing lunch for DS.

1st ay of kindergarten - pack or buy lunch?

Most schools want the Kindergarten kids to pack a lunch for the first week or so. They need to get use to the routine of getting into the lunch room, finding their seats and following the rules.

I would definitely pack it, just to give a little less stress at the beginning of school.

To answer the other question, our lunch is 2.25.

Pack…time is short with learning of routines and you want to be sure they spend all their time eating.
