Re: 10 year old boy dies in centerport during a boating safety class

this is the 3rd article I've read in 3 days about people dying in boating accidents. Granted one was b/c the boater was drunk and 10 people flew off her boat, but the other was a dad who was boating with his wife and 2 kids and he ran over the child while he was teaching how to jet ski i believe. OMG.

This is just heartbreaking to read.

I just saw this, so freaking sad :( It was a 12 year old boy, as per the article that I read that was just updated. I was literally just looking at sailing camp for my DD the other day. So so sad

OH my goodness, how devastating. I am so incredibly sorry for everyone, the family, the child, the camp, the other campers. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Yes. Boating makes me soooo nervous. I feel like anyone can just get a boat and drive it. Are there any licensing requirements or mandatory training classes?

So tragic....Chat Icon

Anyone can just get a boat and drive it. NY has no requirements.

Though in the original accident we were discussing, I'm sure the driver had safety courses. Anything can happen, to anyone, at any time.

Yes I know today's accident was at some kind of boating school no?
I was talking about the other accidents mentioned...drunk boaters, people running others over.
So scary

Re: 10 year old boy dies in centerport during a boating safety class

This is so tragic on so many levels. That poor family and that poor instructor both have to live with this forever, as well as the other children who saw everything and first responders. Nobody wants to see a child die.

I grew up on boats my entire life and have massive respect for boats and the waterways.

An 18 year old on a sail boat with 3 young children is way too much to handle for my eyes. That is a lot of responsibility right there. It is hard enough controlling 3 kids alone or a sailboat alone. I am curious if this is normally the case or are there normally 2 adults on with the kids.

and to speak to the other posts, yes, you can just buy a boat here and hop in. I think that is horrible. I see so many idiots out there all the time that do not even know what side of the channel to be on! It is very stressful to be an educated boater in a literal sea of uneducated boaters. I have anxiety now when we go out and I am constantly looking around. Add to that drinking and boating. I also found a lot of pompous people who buy huge boats but are uneducated on how to drive them. I will stop, Huge pet peeve on mine.

If it's like the sailboats used at the sailing camp on Port Jeff harbor, they are tiny, so I doubt 2 adults and 3 kids would fit on them.

Gotcha, thanks. I just think it is a lot of responsibility for an 18 year old. I do not know how these programs operate.

So tragic. My husband worked many years at a different camp in the same harbor and they taught boating also. His camp had an insane amount of safety procedures (for good reason).
From what was reported, it was a tragic accident and the instructor didn't do anything wrong. Newsday said it was a zodiac he fell from so to fall from a zodiac and get caught in the propeller seems like such a freak thing. What a horrible situation for all involved.

Usually the instructors/staff are not in a sailboat they are in a small tender boat to be able to get to the other boats.

As both a boater & a parent with 2 young kids, this story has broken my heart on so many levels. It's one of my biggest fears & I can't imagine what this boy's family is going through right now.

I also agree with DMT on ALL of the points above. Imagine people driving in huge SUVs without knowing the rules of the road (and sometimes buzzed or drunk) and that's what you see on the Bay. We won't go out on Sundays at all anymore because it seems to be the busiest day by us...we each use 1 vacation day per week over the summer to help avoid the lunatics on the weekend.

Totally off topic, but the motor on our boat blew on Memorial Day weekend & we were stuck in the channel waiting for a tow. You're not supposed to stop there & it's dangerous because people go by fast. People were buzzing by us at full speed - I'm convinced ON PURPOSE to "teach us a lesson" for stopping there. We had 2 small kids on board - I've never been so terrified in my life. They would aim at us & then turn at the last min. as the boat rocked so much that we all almost fell off for 30 straight min. My kids were so scared as I held onto them for dear life. It continued even when Sea Tow showed up & was trying to hook us up! The captain was a raving lunatic (and rightfully so) & even pulled up to a few people as we passed them later on to scream at them asking if they were trying to kill our kids. People just don't care out there...they'll pull up your anchor lines at the beach, anchor right on top of or in front of you so that you can't safely get out, I've seen inexperienced idiots beach their boats for hours because they're drunk and/or don't understand how tides work (5 boats in one day the other week!)...I just find that the "me me me" mentality is even more rampant out there & it's ruining it for the rest of us. If people boat like they drive on LI I can see it being a nightmare. People on LI are a bunch of selfish, arrogant assholes.
I'm ashamed to live here most of the time

Re: 10 year old boy dies in centerport during a boating safety class

my nextdoor neighbor just bought a small boat and parks it in his driveway now Chat Icon Chat Icon
we are in PA and in the town that is legal to park there. (not on the sidewalk).

I believe he got a boating license but I have NO idea what that entails. I cannot believe in NY there are no requirements?? anyone can just hop on and drive a boat?

The neighbors invited some other neighbors out on the boat and Im really glad I wasnt one of them b/c I have no desire to. They moved in last year and I have no idea what his skills are. and I know the kid next door will ask my kid and it will be a cold day in hell before I let my child on a boat with his friends.

Such a horrible accident. Breaks my heart!!

According to these, it looks like you do need to have completed a boat safety course and carry the certificate with you if you are driving a boat. I'm guessing it's probably just rarely enforced.

I can't stop thinking about this. It doesn't sound like the instructor was being irresponsible. My kids sail every day in a similar program and if it's anything like ours the instructors are former students who have tons of boating experience. And I'm pretty sure that safe boating classes are required if you were born after a certain date. But he is only 18, still really just a kid. And a momentary lapse in judgment resulted in the death of a child. He will carry that with him forever. My heart just breaks. It is a horrible tragedy for everyone involved.

I also can't stop thinking about it. But why do you assume there was a momentary lapse in judgment on the part of the instructor? I mean, that is possibly true, but maybe not. Maybe a wave came by, maybe the kid lost his balance (which is what I heard on the news). I hope that the instructor did nothing wrong and in time he is able to emotionally recover. I feel so bad for all involved.

Agree. I was thinking it was just an accident. No lapse in anyone's judgment. But again, we don't know the details yet but freak accidents happen all the time.

I am also a boater and this story is just so upsetting. This sounds like it was a total freak accident. It is incredibly sad for all involved.

Boats are dangerous. In NYS they only require you to have a license and take safety courses if you have a jet ski/wave runner. Otherwise, you don't need it to operate a boat. Also, you don't need to insure your boats either. People have no idea what they are doing out there. Last weekend, we were in a cove where people are anchored and swimming everywhere. This man, with about 10 kids and his wife, were on his brand new 30' sea ray and he had no idea what he was doing. It was windy and he couldn't handle the boat. He almost ran his wife over while she was in the water. I was having a heart attack watching them. DH went to assist and the guy was just so arrogant and didn't want his help. It was crazy. Putting aside the safety component, I don't know why one would not want to know how to properly handle a $100K piece of equipment.

No you're right. I meant to add, if that's what it even was. My point was only that the instructors are very young, and even with proper training it is still dangerous.
