Turkey Roaster (Oster)

Has anyone used an electric turkey roaster? I bought an Oster at Costco for $40. I thought it would free up space in the oven on Thanksgiving.

I know someone who had used one and liked it (but she doesn't make her own gravy).

Has anyone used it and what is your opinion?

Thanks.

I would not buy it, just don't have the room for what sounds to be a big gadget that will get used once a year.
I put other stuff in the oven when the turkey comes out to rest.

If you want a separate gadget, I suggest a nice sized toaster oven with convection. It's something that you can use all year long too! I have a GREAT one by Breville, it's roomy enough to bake some of the sides which frees up your oven for the turkey.

Also, because the turkey needs to rest a while and you have to carve, it leaves plenty of time for most of the sides to bake AFTER the turkey comes out. Even if the sliced turkey cools a little, cover it in a little chicken stock and warm it up in a low heat oven. The stock will help to prevent drying out and keep your slices moist.

Personally, I wouldn't waste the money on a "once a year" gadget, I also don't know that I would trust it to hold my giant turkey and cook it well.

Thank you both. It is huge to have to store all year for the once or twice a year it gets huge . And you are right about the turkey having to sit, which frees up the oven.

I also have a convection toaster oven, it sits on top of my microwave.
I've baked cakes in it, roasted meats and fish, vegetables, made toast.
It will be used to heat up a small ham that DH wants me to make in addition to the turkey.

I have a small galley kitchen, so every inch of space counts and that's why I don't have a lot of gadgets or appliances that I would rarely use.

Thank you. DH reminded me there is a convection oven in the attic. Time to take it out, see if it works, or toss it.

Looks like the Oster will be going back. All the recommendations make sense!
