farewell gift for coworker

My coworker resigned , and this is her last week. Our boss is bringing in bagels on Thursday as a farewell. I was thinking of maybe getting her something but not sure what. She is an older woman in her 60's... maybe an Amazon GC? If so how much is appropriate?

Re: farewell gift for coworker

That's nice of you!
I think a gift card is good. Amazon always works because everyone seems to use it and you can buy just about anything on it.

Or if you know she likes Starbucks, Dunkin, Panera etc- those are good too.

As far as the amount I'd say it depends how close/friendly you are with her.

If I do this, then I know I will be stuck being the one to collect which I don't want to do. I had to do this when some coworker's father passed away. Everyone sat on their hands until someone (me) took the initiative to collect money.

Nice idea but I do not like getting Amazon GC. IF someone was getting me I would prefer Visa or MC, can be bought at any bank you belong to without added fees. She can use this type of card at starbucks, targets etc.
IMO GC to a certain store or type of shopping can be limiting.

See I would rather get the Amazon as some places won’t take the Visa or MC because they have to pay a certain amount to take it, like one of the nail salons I have gone to.

shame on those places, but target, shoprite and other stores will never refuse, and those places that dont take it are changing you to use the card just like any other card, and I do not give them my business.

that being said, I have several amazon cards that are collecting dust because I do not buy on amazon, had the GC been visa or MC I would be able to use

The other thing I hate about visa gift cards are if you have let's say 5 dollars left on it, you have to find something for 5 dollars or less to spend it on. I have so many of them laying around my house with 2 or 3 bucks on them because you can't use them if the item you are buying is more than the balance left on the card.

Agreed, I also dislike Visa gift cards for that reason. If I get them I usually end up regifting them to one of my kids' teachers during the holidays because they are such a pain to buy things with....

I ended up getting her a DD gift card since I know she goes there. TY all!

I have been able to use them for buying something more than the balance that is left at supermarkets - I pretty much only use them there as everywhere else seems to be a hassle.

Banks no longer offer them with no fee though so it's a moot point.

Maybe you can organize a group to take the person out to lunch instead of a gift?

Yes! They make it as complicated as possible to use them. I never give visa cards and I'd prefer not to get them. I'm sure I must have $$$ lying around in unused balances.

Meanwhile I don't think I know anyone IRL who doesn't shop on amazon or at target.

I kid you not, probaby half of my salary or more is spent between Amazon and Target. I wish I was joking.... Chat Icon

The ironic thing is that I have used them to purchase online gift cards on Amazon for my purchases. You can put an odd amount like $3.73 and use it up that way.

That is a great idea! I'm going to go look for my random cards with low amounts and do just that. Thanks!

You can also use them at the supermarket - they seem to be able to read them and allow you to charge the rest on another card.
