Smoke detector question

With all of these tragic fires happening, I realized I do not have a smoke detector on my main floor. There is one in the basement and one at the top of the stairwell on my second floor. I have a Colonial style home. If a fire starts in the kitchen, it will take a while for the smoke to hit the upstairs detector. My husband says it can’t go in the kitchen because I will set it off all the time cooking. Where do you have your detector on your main living floor?

I have a colonial as well, we do have one in the kitchen and there have been no issues with cooking and setting it off.

Smoke detector question

On the main floor, we have it in the hallway.

We also have one in the basement. Two in the upstairs hallway and one in each bed room.

We have ones that communicate with each other so if the one in the basement goes off, it alerts the other main living area ones and literally says "fire in basement".

Re: Smoke detector question

Our house is "colonial-esque". We have a smoke detector in every room and hallway except for bathrooms and the kitchen. I have over 10 hardwired throughout the house. They are all connected, so when one goes off, the whole house starts going crazy.. Chat Icon I would like to upgrade to the ones that tell you where the alert is coming from. It would save seconds trying to figure out which alarm/area has the fire or potential fire.

Re: Smoke detector question

We have ours in the hallway leading to the kitchen. It does sometimes go off if we're cooking (very rarely though), but we open the windows and it goes off after a little while.

We have combo smoke/CO2 alarms in our upstairs and downstairs hallways (hardwired) and smoke detectors in each bedroom. We renovated about 10 years ago and this was code.

When I had a colonial, there was one in the kitchen, in the area where the table was, so it was a little removed from the cooking area

Judging my your cooking posts, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume we don't have the same skill set when it comes to cooking. Chat Icon

I did the same as you I suppose. As soon as I heard that terrible story, I checked the alarms. One is hardwired and I think is dead. I added a battery operated one.

I’m planning on putting one in each bedroom now. The idea of a fire scares the hell out of me.

We have one in our den which is right near the kitchen and it only goes off when my DH is using the indoor grill/air fryer.
When using that one appliance he puts a plastic bag over the smoke detector and removes it immediately after cooking.
It works like a charm.

Re: Smoke detector question

Ours is in the hallway between the laundry room and kitchen. In my old house it was in the kitchen and would go off it you boiled water. So don’t put it there. I would also get a CO detector as well. We put that in the dining room. We have ten year hard wired ones in each bedroom upstairs.

Smoke detector question

I have one in the hallway right next to my kitchen. I’m a terrible cook and my kitchen is very small—but surprisingly it doesn’t go off very often.

Fire is one of the things that terrifies me so I probably have about 12 smoke detectors in my 1200 sq ft house.

Re: Smoke detector question

One on each floor. In hallways. Ours are hardwired into the alarm system but we also have a battery operated one on first floor too. Just in case.

ETA: we have a dormered cape

Put one in the main living area or hallway not off the kitchen. One each bedroom and even in an unfinished basement. And dont forget co2. Have fire extinguishers accessible near kitchen/garage/basement. My dryer caught fire once it was so scary...

Re: Smoke detector question

We have right outside the kitchen and it is hardwired. Yes the stove/oven occasionally makes it go off if it gets to hot not necessarily smoke. We open the windows and it stops :)

Re: Smoke detector question

Ours is behind the entryway near the front door ... sometimes cooking does set it off but not often.
