I have all of his books, looks like I'm sitting on a gold mine now! Chat Icon The four books that have been discontinued are blowing up online, it's crazy! Someone was asking $2500 for McElligot's Pool. Chat Icon

That's ironic isn't it?
The ones that were discontinued due to offensive content will end up being work a fortune.
Crazy how that works!

I know! It's crazy what people are asking for them. I don't know that anyone would actually pay that kind of money but still.

I think it's a shame they are being discontinued. I understand the issues people have, and I respect that, but when these books were written times were very different. I think it's possible to put the illustrations and writings within the context of the culture back then and still enjoy them today. I mean, do people not watch movies from the 30's and 40's as well because many of those were racist AF. But if you put those movies in context of the times, you can still enjoy them while doing better by others today. KWIM?

I will always love Dr. Seuss, his books were fantastical as a child.

You can check out EBay and see if anyone is selling them and how much they have sold for even if you are not interested in selling.

I have, I mentioned above I've seen people asking $2500 and I even saw one for FIVE GRAND!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know some don't like Dr. Seuss, and that's fine, but am I the only one that is REALLY bothered by the fact that we're essentially BANNING books? People should be free to read what they wish and form their own opinions no matter the text. I don't need anyone making that decision for me, I'm really dismayed at this situation.

Omg I think hell is freezing over as I agree with you lol.

Yes but asking and selling price are 2 different things. Now if they get what they are asking for, that is insane.

I totally agree. If you think a book is racist, or biased in anyway, well then dont pick it up and read it or purchase it. Plain and simple. People can make their own decisions!

In this instance the only one doing the banning is Seuss Enterprises. They are choosing to no longer print them.

I feel uncomfortable trying to rally behind a children’s author that would use the N word. Chat Icon

This is a man born in 1904, would you expect him to be anything but racist given the culture of the day? Racism in the early part of the 20th century wasn't taboo or even considered problematic, you have to take that into consideration where Seuss is concerned. If someone used those terms today, it would be a different story. We can't hold people from 117 years ago to the same standards we have today, times were VERY different.

I understand that position but I just don’t get the clinging to Seuss versus finding any other author who has more inclusive messaging. There’s a ton of wonderful authors, people of color, who have far better messaging and no history of racist imagery or words. But that’s just my take on it. I know many love Seuss books but I just don’t find them of value and conflicting to what I’m trying to teach in my home.

Then it is your option but we all should be given the same option.
History is simply history. We can’t stop history but you can choose how to continue your future.

Re: Dr. Suess

I thought it was Seuss Enterprises themselves taking these books out of publication. These titles have also historically been their least profitable, so there may be some financial aspect to their decision. Books go out of print all the time.

Yes, wasn't there controversy recently with Gone with the Wind? Same kind of a thing. I think maybe putting a disclaimer of some kind in regards to the culture of the times they were written might be a better solution

People would have a problem with the disclaimer too Chat Icon people just love to complain about pretty much anything.

Another old white male author that is overrated and outdated. I think kids reading “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, a young black woman writer, will do much more for them then reading Twain. More modern, too.

I think far too many people are conditioned to just think all of these supposed great literature authors are the end all be all. They aren’t. They are outdated and stale, in my opinion.

Music with explicit lyrics already comes with a warning. There's a rating system for graphic movies as well. Same for video games. This is so parents can be aware of the type of media their child is consuming and parent accordingly. These things also aren't geared for kids as the target audience like Seuss books are. Why would music made for adults need to be banned because you personally find the lyrics offensive? Just don't listen to it. Why do you feel it's ok to ban some forms of media but not others just because you're personally offended by it? And for the record I'm not defenfing this song. I've never even heard it. Also, nobody banned these Seuss books. His estate pulled them. And seeing as how they were his least popular titles some part of that decision might have been financially motivated. Books go out of print all the time. It has nothing to do with banning them.

Here's an idea - why can't they read both? I think opening the dialogue on what things were like when these authors were writing is a good start.

In this instance the only one doing the banning is Seuss Enterprises. They are choosing to no longer print them.

I feel uncomfortable trying to rally behind a children’s author that would use the N word. Chat Icon

Then maybe we need to ban all singers that use that and other curses and derogatory lyrics.
Have fun stopping your kids listen to that as they won’t ban it as it makes money.

I'm no prude and I am disgusted by the song W.A.P. I'm horrified by it actually. And again, I don't' get offended by much. But the thought of my 10 year old daughter listening to that, turns my stomach

Yep but I don’t see anyone banning it. Some of the songs my kids listen to are horrible. I can’t believe that record companies will allow this but it is all about money.
Why do we choose things like Aunt Jemima over things like music that will affect our kids more?

I never said it should be banned. I don't think anything should be banned actually

I was referring to Valentinesbaby's post responding to yours where she said she doesn't see anybody banning music.
