Re: Ancestry DNA

I did, and so did DW.

Everyone on here has seen my Santa pic knows what I look like....

I'm actually 16% African... like central Africa. Mali/Niger region.

The rest is northern European as expected.

Ancestry DNA

My dad is suppose to be 100% Italian, my mom 100% Irish. I came back 35% Italian, 19% Irish. The rest was a mix of German, Eastern European, and Scottish.

Oh wow! How cool is that?

Are their tests pretty accurate?

I think they're pretty accurate. Lots of people think they are 100% something because family history gets passed down by word of mouth. Some genetics may be ignored, "not allowed" a hundred years ago, etc.
DW thought she had some Native American, based on oral family history. Her DNA said she had 0%. We think the NA person was a distant uncle that claimed to be NA, but was probably Italian, but wanted to claim NA genetics for any number of reasons.
Also, often in Europe, country boundaries changed, or people walked across borders.

No. I urge anyone considering one of these tests to do their research and read the disclosures very carefully before allowing their genetic data to be uploaded into any kind of database.

This is a good place to start researching:

Re: Ancestry DNA

My DH and I did it about 2/3 years ago. It was what we expected. He’s “100%” Italian, but as I recall, was a mix of different regions like Greece, North Africa, etc in addition to mostly Italian.

My results turned out to be way more interesting than expected bc a first cousin I didn’t know I had contacted me with an email beginning, “My name is x and I was adopted at birth...” Turned out she was a match on my dad’s side, but he has four older brothers, three of whom passed away. After some detective work on my part, I concluded she was the daughter of my only living uncle...who had no clue she existed. He took the test then and...boom! Sadly, her biological mom passed away before she was able to locate that side of her family. But what a happy outcome for all of us...she joined our big, happy family!

I did it, and I found my dad's cousin whom he hadn't seen for decades! We met up and have stayed in touch on social media. Once the pandemic ends, I am sure we will get together again.

As far as my DNA, it was wildly different from what I expected, and it has opened up a bit of a Pandora's box in my life. I am not upset about it, but I want to know more...and am not getting answers.

No but I had a cousin that used it and it opened up a whole can of worms. It was found out that one of my uncles (who has since died about 15 years ago and not the father of my cousin who did the kit) had an affair and had other kids out there that no one ever knew about. One of the women contacted my cousins mother through Facebook and it put her in a really awkward situation.

Re: Ancestry DNA

My moms family has been in the US for over 200 years. She’s traced it back.

You’d think one of them would have bought beachfront or Manhattan real estate for 25 cents but I digress.

Anyway, there were some family stories about potential Native American and assumption of a lot of mixing being in the melting pot for so long. We knew she was Irish/English but that was it.

The results came back 92% Irish and English and 8% norweigian. So that part was interesting but we thought we were spicier than this. Lol.
