I guess we're all just hiring tutors now
On the subject of schools and next year, the new thing in our community seems to be hiring tutors for now and throughout the summer. I guess having all our kids "play catch up" together next year, isn't going to be the reality. The only ones catching up will be the kids that don't have private tutors. So here I go, onto FB to look for a tutor just in case our plans to move don't happen. I feel bad for the kids whose parents cannot afford it. I don't want to spend the money, but I see no other option. I won't have my kids being the ones behind.

I highly doubt anyone in my community is doing that.
I barely see half her classmates participating in the online learning in the google classroom. (the teacher is always posting calling out certain kids who still haven't done this or that, or even logged on at all!)
No way are they going to be having these kids have private tutors especially over the summer.
I think, at least in my area, it is what it is right now.
I can't see the teachers next year in our elementary school, not slowing it down a bit and doing some review in the beginning.
I mean 4th grade stuff isn't rocket science- she'll catch up fine

If people have the money for that and want to handle it that way I don't see anything wrong with that. I am taking a wait and see approach

I guess depends on situation and child. I have already been paying for one to help my kindergartner with reading. He was receiving extra help for reading in school but it didn't continue over remote instruction. The tutor has been great with him and I plan on continuing throughout the summer. My son has ADHD and was already having trouble in school so I guess I do want to catch him up. Otherwise I know my son is capable of catching up. The reading and writing was already a weak spot for him.

I started seeing the posts in our community group 2 weeks ago, I thought people would get prices and be like "F that". Today alone there are 5 parents asking. The parents of at least 7 of my kids classmates are recommending who they hired. Right now it's just zoom tutoring, but by summer they will make house calls. I guess these people just have the money to spend instead of holding our district accountable. Elementary school no less.

Yes. This is happening in my district too. The BEST was when some teachers were saying they couldn't/wouldn't teach their classes on zoom. They had a million reasons why. YET, some of these same teachers were TUTORING on zoom during the same time! Paycheck plus $100 an hour. WIN WIN!
That said I do agree that the gap won't be the same for every child. First, every child is different. Some children learn really fast and will catch up quickly so they might not need tutors. The vast majority aren't like that. Many will hire tutors or put their kids in online programs. I'm not a teacher but, up until 5th Grade - I can and will teach my child myself! But, going back to my post on the other thread. I'm not getting paid to do this! I also disagree with what another poster said on the last thread - something to the effect of we are now realizing how hard it is to be a teacher because we can't teach our kids - NOPE - it's just not our job!

I thought about getting a tutor for my son, but in the end I think I will not.
My district is offering my summer school programming for students. I asked my son's Kindergartner teacher about specifics, but she said he was never recommended for RTI and doesn't need the summer remediation. She said as long as I encourage him to write and read over the summer, he will be fine in the fall. I trust her 30 years of experience.

Exactly! I know plenty of teachers that have a hard time teaching their own kids. I really think it has to do with being at home and distractions. Also, there is a level of comfort kids have with a parent that makes them feel like it's ok to test boundaries. I think that anyone that doesn't understand that, probably doesn't have kids.
There are plenty of studies out there that try to determine why kids act out with their parents but not for strangers. Most studies narrow it down to it being a "safe-zone" type of thing.
Every teacher my kid has ever had says he behaves perfectly for them, but when we sit down to do school work, he is messing around, slipping down to the floor, needs a drink, dropped his pencil, any excuse to not actually do the work. I get that he is still very young, but he doesn't do this shit for his teacher. So yeah, her job is hard, but he also behaves for her.

DS has one of the most well-liked teachers in his school. I doubt anyone will blame her next year. This whole thing is frustrating. I feel like I have to spend the money now to keep him on the same level as the other kids.

Both of my parents are and were college professors. My husband and I have graduate degrees. We teach our kids. But if we were unable to do so, I have already gotten tutoring and will do so again if a subject requires it.

my friends who teach in the same district that their kids attend won't teach their kids - and they are struggling with them with distance learning the same as everyone else...
I know some who are getting tutors to help their kids - they don't feel that they are getting much of an education right now and need more. I would consider as an activity (and maybe they would listen to them more than us) but, not to get ahead.

I feel the exact same way you do. I am in a highly competitive district and did not get my kids tutors in kindergarten but know many other parents get them. I have mixed feeling on the issue. My kids are not in the gifted and talented program although they are reading at the college level in fifth and seventh grade. They also scored high enough in the math tests. I personally feel that kids should be taught the material not what my district does for the g and t math program. My son is trying out for the specialized stem science program. So far he had made it through the top two rounds, and they are making the final decisions. I am not sure what they will be doing re covid. Normally the class has 20 kids, but I could see them making it ten. They had the application, from that they narrowed it to 100 kids, you had to make a video and schematics of your design. From there they knocked it down to 30 kids. Then he had the interview. I am not sure if they will say to the kids if all is on line, we can have a bigger class, the same normal class, or a much smaller class. We shall see.

Here either. My son has zoom with pre-k class, OT, and special ed teacher. We stopped doing the class ones because he was zoomed out and we needed to save his energy for the zoom sessions for services

OMG that would get me upset if I found out that my son's teacher was tutoring privately while not providing on-line sessions for her regular students. As it is, my son is supposed to get counseling 1x a week and the counselor keeps blowing us off. But I know she sees private clients over tele-therapy.

I was skeptical using a Zoom tutor but it's been working out. It's a small group of 3 other students from my son's class. Only thing is that he doesn't focus unless it is his turn, but I assume he is like that in school too. The teacher is really good and is able to engage my son. I'm going to use her over the summer, but only over Zoom. Still not comfortable having people in my house yet.

I'm trying to imagine what would happen if my boss found out I wasn't working during the day because I was freelancing on the side to make money all while collecting my paycheck from the company.

This year I called it a loss, but he can’t do this in September. He will be royally f#cked!!
