Am I the only one willing to send my child to school? There has already been discussion of strict protocols being put in place- masks/gloves/ curbside drop off/temp monitoring. I am perfectly comfortable with this. She is also a low risk child who lives with 2 low risk parents who are working from home and don't go out besides my biweekly grocery trips. No grandparent visits, no park, nothing. She'd go from home to school and then back again.
I seem to be the only one who feels this way. I don't think NY is ready to re-open non-essential businesses. But I'm really beginning to weigh the risk benefit ratio for schools and I feel that schools, with the proper precautions and parental cooperation (which I know there is no way to monitor), are a low enough risk that the benefit to our children is a reasonable trade-off.
I don't mean to sound like some lunatic protesting with a shotgun and a MAGA hat. I don't need my nails done or to eat in a restaurant. I'll wait 2 hours to get into the supermarket. I just want my DD to go to school.I'm just watching her regress before my eyes and it's like watching a slow train wreck that may or may not end.
I would send my kids too - they need social interaction. As the time goes on I feel worse and worse for them. Today was the day I assumed they would go back. My older son is heading to middle school next year and is so unprepared - he has barely any work now.
If 10 weeks of distance learning means your child will be unprepared for middle school - they were never prepared to begin with.
He’s averaging about 2 hours of schooling a week in 4th grade (Friday is a review day). So 20 hours of school over a 10 week period is definitely going to hurt him. I would like to think they spend more than 30 minutes a day learning at school! And he did have homework beforehand. He’s a great student but the workload (or lack thereof) isn’t helping him at all.
We’ve reached out to the teachers and they sent more fun activities.

But he’ll also be in school with 200 other kids who are in the same situation.
Teachers know they’ll have to catch everyone up in the fall—it isn’t going to be a typical school year.

Because it’s basic math, it’s not something we are making up. You can’t calculate a mortality rate which is a percentage of a data set, if you aren’t testing everyone who has it. You can’t deny a mathematical equation, that has nothing to do with conspiracy or being a nay sayer.
I know several people who couldn’t get tested for weeks after having symptoms and they ended up testing positive. I also know people who still couldn’t get tested because they were told to stay home. Which I understand why we can’t test everyone, but you also can’t calculate a percentage off a number that is clearly inaccurate right now.
ETA: an example of how math works:
Population = 10,000
Deaths = 200
We test 3000 people, 2000 are positive
Mortality rate = 10%
If we tested everyone and the actual pos # turns out to be greater:
POS test = 8000
Mortality rate is now 2.5%
We still lost 200 people, it’s still sad but see how the mortality rate drastically changed??

My issue with our collective reaction to this virus is that we pretty much know who is at risk and who is likely to end up in the hospital. THEY should be quarantining, absolutely! As a society we should be caring for them so that they don't need to leave their houses. But we are reaching the point where it is not reasonable to ask the other 98% of the entire population (who will be absolutely fine if they are exposed) to stay home for months and months more. Lives are, and will continue to be lost as a consequence of this shut down. Those lives matter too!
But I know feeling that way makes me a monster with no regard for human life.

Some moms have careers that require them to work 18 hours a day to develop the antibody tests, vaccines and treatments you seem to be so well versed in.
We can't all sit home and color all day.

I completely agree with you. If you're someone that will be hospitalized over getting pneumonia, then by all means quarantine yourself. The elderly and immunocompromised should be the ones quarantining. Instead, we've locked up all the healthy people so the elderly and immunocompromised can go out shopping and feel safe. The way they have handled this entire thing is nonsense. The percentage absolutely makes a difference. If the mortality rate was that high, there would be dead bodies all over NYC. Yes, 80k people died of the flu last year and 40k have died in the past 3 months, but they're comparing apples to oranges. There is already a flu vaccine and 80k people died - and we did not shut our entire country down.
I will stand by what I've been saying all along. If up to 80% of people can walk around without even knowing they have the virus because they don't feel sick, than it's not as scary as the news is making it out to be. Yes, a lot of people have gotten sick and a lot have died, but it's not the black plague and I can take my chances. If you don't want to take a chance, then you can stay inside, no one is forcing you to go out.
Let me just add that I have no compassion at all for people that smoke or vape because you're intentionally making yourself sick. So when they say a "perfectly healthy" person died of the virus, but failed to mention they vape or smoke, that's not exactly a healthy person. It's a virus that affects your respiratory system. How dumb can people be? It's time to quit. Not to mention the other people with "no preexisting conditions" but I can see from their picture on the news they are obese to morbidly obese. Sorry I am running short on patience for this. Our family doctor said he would bet we all had it already (we were sick 2 months ago). He is going to test us as soon as he can.
The first confirmed cases in the US were in January. I'm willing to bet it was here even earlier than that. It's a virus that spreads super easily. I just find it really hard to believe that for a virus that's so deadly the bodies weren't piling up at all in Feb. Wuhan is a major travel hub. They say the first person to have it there was in November. Again, a virus that spreads this quickly, would have been in NYC long before the lockdown in March. Especially with no one wearing masks. Maybe the numbers are finally going down because most people have already had it. Everything they do is a guess. They aren't sure about anything and we probably won't have a clear picture on how this really went down until way after it's over.

If schools reopen in June I would send my kids. They have gone nowhere since March 13 and by that point I would feel comfortable sending them. My husband works in a food store and yes we are worried however at this point we are trying to stay positive and hope for the best. My parents are worried but they miss my kids. They will not come in to my house and facetime with the kids. I am home schooling 3 kids and it is hard. My kids miss their friends, their teachers and just going to a park.
I also heard from a friend who is a teacher that if school is closed for the rest of the year that they would consider ending the year earlier. I would be happy about that since Im tired of google classroom. I do feel bad for the seniors, 8th graders, 5th graders and even the kids graduating pre-k. This is a scary and hard situation for so many and I worry about small businesses.

To address a few of the points brought up by PPs, the amount of deaths related to COVID is a lot lower than it would have been had we not enforced social distancing guidelines so you can't really compare any statistics with flu statistics right now. There have been over 40,000 deaths with many people not leaving their homes. I think it's hard to deny that this is more contagious and more deadly than the flu.
Also, as for bodies piling up, they are. Google. The suffolk county morgue is overflowing with bodies that wouldn't even normally be sent to them and they have refrigerated trucks loaded with bodies out east. They are also opening temporary morgues everywhere. Part of this is due to the fact that the gravediggers and crematoriums are operating on skeleton crews so they can't get rid of the bodies fast enough. It's actually really, really disgusting.

Cuomo - schools are closed. Period.
So for those who think it's been here for awhile, how do you sudden explain the sudden spike in deaths?

I just posted something similar in a separate post. I do believe that it was here before we knew it but I don't believe it could have been 3/4 months before just because of how contagious it is and how many people require hospital care.

What Rainyday said. Healthcare workers are endangered by every "liberated" person who gets sick.
Schools, no matter how they're run or what kind of pickups and dropoffs we structure, are petri dishes.
Plus, it's about so much more than fatality rates. Doctors and scientists are saying that there are long term effects on organs, neurological issues, etc. in survivors.
A Chinese study just said that there are 30 strains or more. Doctors are worried about the virus's effects on kids' cognition and emotional regulation.
We don't know for sure that a negative test means you aren't contagious.
We don't do enough testing.
We don't know if antibodies signify immunity.
We don't know how long immunity, if one has it, lasts.
But by all means, America, a month in, get restless, engage in magical thinking, and make a bunch of unreasonable demands.
Past pandemics have come and gone. This will be dealt with eventually, somehow. But the second wave is usually loads worse than the first. Why can't we learn from history, come to grips with all of the above, and have patience? And not just because of the fatality rate.

I agree with this but there are also other ramifications to keeping the economy shut down for this long. There is a middle ground here but I feel like so many people are so black or white with this that it is causing a bigger divide than we already had in this country.
I believe we can gradually ease restrictions and start to resume some sort of life. We can't go balls to the walls and reopen everything. But if we leave everything closed much longer I do believe we will be in a way worse state than we are now.

In all seriousness, can you please link these articles?
Every single article I've read says that yes, of course the virus is mutating, but it's mutating very slowly and not getting more deadly. And the mutations are so close to the original that they won't impact the effectiveness of a vaccine.
And if most children are not even showing symptoms, how are they even compiling enough data to indicate long term effects? Or is it just speculation?

A vaccine may be more than 18 months away. Do you believe we should be in this state for that long? I am not being snarky, I am curious. Because even our governor, who has been very cautious, has said we need to look ahead and start thinking about how to enter Phase 1 of reopening.

I would have no problem sending my children to school if they opened next week. My son is in pre-k and gets special ed services. We are doing it on zoom right now buts it’s not the same. He needs that social interaction.

I would send my son to school. He has several masks and is a frequent hand washer. I’d think the school will need to modify the cafeteria situation but other than that he never leaves his classroom. The rooms all have bathrooms in them. My DH can WFH indefinitely so I’d have him do drop off and pick up to avoid the bus.
I teach and would go back to work as well. The only issue I have is our cafeteria situation. I have lunch duty and there are over 500 kids in a cramped cafeteria. I am not comfortable with that.

If you look, the fatality rate is close to 6% in NY. Almost 5.5% nationwide. That is nothing to take lightly. We all know people who have been hospitalized or killed by this virus.
No thank you. My kids are staying home.
Some moms have careers that require them to work 18 hours a day to develop the antibody tests, vaccines and treatments you seem to be so well versed in.
We can't all sit home and color all day.
That was rude. I have a career FYI and I am working many hours a day providing a vital service whilst also taking care of my three children.
I'm done even reading these boards. Not worth my time.

I could NEVER see sending my kids back to school if it opened next week. I think it would be more chaotic, because they would be spending more time trying to distance everyone's desks in each classroom, and the bus, forget it. It would be more of structuring the building rather teaching. IMO it is not worth the risk. Plus, we have may students family members who have the virus or already had it.
Plus if they have to wear a mask to attend school, then it is not safe to go back. I have twin boys, one is on the Autism Spectrum, and I have been having him practice wearing a mask, and he is good it short periods of time, but would never wear one all day. I dont know if a typical kid would be able to do that. Then what happens, when they eat lunch, masks come off and now they are at risk for exposure/

The Chinese study is googlable. I forget what site it was on, but you can find it. "corona 30 strains chinese study".
I don't think people understand that the models and the peaks and the projections are all built on the assumption that distancing and quarantine continue. The minute we stop, all bets are off, and the "war zones" we have seen will pale in comparison. There is no safe way to do school now. It doesn't matter how many old people individual kids avoid or how we do pickup---all those kids in a building with doors and furniture and bathrooms--even college kids can't stop wild spreading of things much less contagious than this.
And, yes. 18 months if necessary. Look at longitudinal studies of the 1918 pandemic. Survivors had weaker hearts--lot sof problems that shorten lifespans. It may not need to be that long, though. An effective treatment might help--even more research so we understand immunity better. It may be much sooner. But for right now, this is happening, and we can't stop tending to it because we don't like it. That would be irresponsible.
Even now, essential services are being performed. Chemo is being given. Mental help and education online. We are actually very lucky. I just hope we don't blow it. Lots of these debates won't age well.
