You're the parent, you make the rules. You want them to go to Catholic High School, they don't have a choice/ I went to Catholic School from Kindergarten through College, but in High School I'd say at least 50% of the kids came from public school, across 4 boroughs, and they were all fine, lol!
Ugh I actually hate this approach. Forcing a child to go to a high school that they don't want to go to is almost always going to make them miserable and in turn make your family miserable. We are not talking about a toddler or young child. These are young adults and they should be a part of the decision making process. My mom did not like the high school that I chose but I am glad she let me go anyway because it truly shaped the person I am and I had the best experience. While so many people look back at high school as a miserable time, I think it was quite possibly some of the best times of my life.
As for the OP, as a product of Catholic school I would say there are pros and cons. I am sure there will be some others from your town that will switch to Catholic school for high school so I am sure the transition will be fine. But I would take a good hard look at what makes the catholic school better than the public school in your mind. You have to look at what your priorities are and what is the right fit for your child and what is right for one of your children might not be right for another.
Then don't take that approach if you don't like it. 13 is a child. I know millennials don't raise children as children anymore though. When you support yourself, live out of the house , drive etc...then you get to make your own rules.
Thank you, I won't take that approach. And thanks for thinking of me as a millenial! I am faaarrrrr from it unfortunately. I am speaking from my own experience. My mother forced my brother to attend a school he didn't like, he failed his way out so he could go back to public school. I was able to pick my school and I loved it. This isn't about making a rule - it's about making the right decision for your child.

If you can afford the tuition at the Catholic HS and your kid wants it,its a win win IMHO. I grew up in Queens and went to Catholic school from K-8th grade in Maspeth. I wanted to join my friends who all went to St. Francis Prep and Christ the King but my parents dropped the bomb on me early in 8th grade that due to finances, they just couldnt afford tuition so public HS was the only option. I was devastated and didnt even bother sitting for the SHSSAT (or whatever the admissions test is called now), and stupidly listed Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech as my top choices on the public school application and was unaware that they required another admission test. So my parents was forced to scramble at the last minute to avoid going to my zoned HS (bad reputation) and I “moved” into my aunts house so I could attend a different HS until I could re-apply to other public HS for sophomore year..what a nightmare. I still have regrets about not having gone on to Catholic HS..I know I would have been more aware of how important it was to have certain academic achievements completed to be considered a competitive applicant to top colleges.

I went through 12 years of Catholic school, my husband went to public. My 3 kids went the public route - never even asked about private school. Honestly, it comes down to money, we just couldn't swing it. My oldest is in college now and attending a public HS didn't hold her back at all. She was accepted to all the colleges she applied to and is doing great.
