Spin off to line cutting

Yesterday I was in Trader Joe’s...it was super busy. The line was pretty long but moved quickly, less than a 10 minute wait. A few people in front of me on the line was a guy with a full cart, and in front of him was an older man standing there with nothing. The guy with the cart basically said to him “are you on line? You don’t have anything...you can’t hold a place in line & then have someone meet you”...he went on & on...the older man was saying “do they have a sign with that rule? You're not the manager, leave me alone”. Eventually the older man was fed up & said “just go in front of me if you’re so bothered”...and the guy went in front still ranting that what he was doing was wrong. I was really surprised that this guy was so rude to the older man (I did see his wife with a cart earlier, so he was in line waiting for her). But who cares? It’s one line and you can’t control how much someone is buying. They literally have 15-20 cashiers (it’s in Queens) & it moves quickly. Maybe this is situational depending on the store...but would you say something to someone holding a place in line?

Spin off to line cutting

I wouldn't say anything. Well, I would say something - but it would be to the guy who was yelling at the older man. He's a d!ck and very rude.

I don't consider it cutting if the person is holding the place. I consider it cutting if you are in line to buy something and someone else joins you and buys their items separately.

Re: Spin off to line cutting

I probably wouldn't say anything, but that could change depending upon how my day is going.

That said, I think the old man to be rude to hold a place in line while someone else shops. His retort about there not being a rule or a sign about it was really rude too. If the other person jumps in with a small basket, not really a big deal, but if they jump in with a fully loaded cart, that's just a real ****** move.
My time is just as precious as anyone else's.

I was close to saying something like “you’re making a big deal over nothing”, because there are so many cashiers, it wasn’t going to effect him at all.

I would be annoyed if it was a place like stop n shop & you’re on line for 1 cashier & someone shows up with a ton of stuff. But this was one line & as a cashier becomes available, you go to it.

My feeling is, what if the older man had the cart with the majority of stuff & then his wife meets up with a few more things? That would probably look better lol...supermarket mind games haha

I wouldn't have said anything to an old man.

But I choose my line at the supermarket based on how many people are on the line and how many items they have, so if his wife showed up with a full cart they would have kind of screwed me over and I'd be pissed.

I wouldn't have said anything because by the time my turn came, and his wife didn't come back yet with her cart, he would have had no choice but to let that person go ahead.

But the guy with the big mouth didn't give that a chance.

Yup - same. I've never heard of someone holding a place in line when they're not ready to check out. If someone's there with the cart and another person in the group needs to run and get something, that's fine. But if someone shows up with a full cart, that's SUPER rude.

I'm with the guy who was mad at the old man.
The point of a check-out line is that you are ready to check out. I would be very upset if i'm waiting online, and all of a sudden a person with a full cart cuts in front of me. Even at that TJs one person holding up a cashier with a full cart will make a 5 minute difference to how long you have to wait.
Imagine if we all had our spouses hold our place in line while we did all our shopping.

i just have issues with entitlement and people trying to get around rules.

I can't think of of a store I'd need to do this, and I'm usually not shopping with DH, but I wouldn't consider it cutting. It's being efficient. You are one party, spitting up the task of waiting and shopping.
There was a place I would shop long, long ago, and I can't remember where, but it had terrible lines and many people did this.

Re: Spin off to line cutting

I don’t think there is anything wrong with what the older man did. He’s in front of you, it’s not your business if he has 2 things or 40 things in the cart coming. He’s waiting like everyone else. It’s nice to be able to pick your line based on how much other customers in front of you have but anything could happen to change that-a cashier could close, some open, the lady with 1 loaf of bread could hold the line up over a coupon...ect

If there are so many cashiers and the wait isn't long, why is he holding his place in line?? No need. Sorry old man, you're in the wrong.

I honestly couldn't care less either way....who cares. People get worked up over such ridiculous things sometimes (on both sides).

Normally it will annoy me when people hold a place on line, especially when it's for multiple people with tons of stuff. But in this case I wouldn't care, because it was an elderly man who was doing what he was told to by his wife! How do you think he's been able to live so long, lol!

If the lines are long, I don't see anything wrong with him holding spots. We have done that at BJs a few times and at Kolh's (which always has ridiculous lines). If anyone said anything to me I'd just ignore them or give them the finger lol.

I'm all for calling people out, but this guy was waiting his turn technically. I wouldn't have said anything. It's annoying since you choose lines based on the amount of items in cart of the person in front of you. So, yes, I can see the frustration. But the guy WAS waiting. If his turn came up and he let those behind him in front of him go ahead, it seems reasonable to me.

In this case I agree. It’s rude to hold a place and then to argue with anyone who asks what you are doing.

This. What the older man was doing was extremely rude.
