PTA Board members

So I was asked to be the PTA board secretary. Only if I wanted to. The last secretary had to leave due to a job offer. I am very involved with the school and chair a few events. I go to the meetings and lucky to work part-time from home, which is why I got involved.

I am thinking of taking it. It's only a year for now and can always run again if I want to.

Any board members on here have any advise? Is it worth it. I already chair assemblies and dine out fundraisers. I do volunteer a lot at events the school has.
I have a 5th grader (it's his last year at elementary so also on the 5th grade committee) and a 3rd grader. Well, going into 5th and 3rd. LOL
Would love some advise, pointers, etc! Thanks!

Re: PTA Board members

In our district the pta Exec secretary does next to nothing - comparatively speaking to the rest of the board. But I’m assuming it depends on the district. I would talk to the previous secretary to see what she was responsible for and how time consuming it was. The presidents and treasurer are really the ones with the most involved positions.

I have been on the Board for about 8 years now. I'm President of 2 PTAs and delegate of another. It really seems like you do a lot now. I don't think that it will be much different for you except maybe adding in a planning meeting once a month or so. I would check the job description for what the secretary does in your district, but mostly they take notes at the meetings and send out thank you notes. Not too much.

I agree with this. If it's the Recording (different from Corresponding) Secretary position, your primary responsibility is to attend all of the general meetings and take minutes to be presented at the following meeting. Other responsibilities include keeping attendance and having up-to-date membership information to establish a quorum in case of a vote.

If you already attend the meetings, then this will be an easy position for you. As president, I once had a Recording Secretary who missed 6 out of 10 meetings. Why take the position if you can't fully commit to it? Chat Icon

First off, thank you for even considering it. I sat as VP for two years. It’s work but rewarding. Not sure if you have 1 or 2 secretary positions. Recording keeps the minutes of each meeting (ours records it on her phone so she can listen and write out the minutes from home.) Corresponding secretary is hospitality and submitting permits for all pta events.

Thanks guys! I am happy to take the position and help out a lot. It does sound like a lot of work, but rewarding too. I already chair a couple of events, but will pass that down to someone. Although the dine out fundraisers are pretty easy so may keep that one and pass down cultural arts.

Thanks! Only 1 secretary position. 1 President, 2 VP's, 1 Fundraiser VP, Treasurer, Secretary and Bylaws.
