Bereavement gift?

Not food or food gift certificates:

One of the moms in our Girl Scout troop tragically lost her mother in a terrible accident. Chat Icon We have always given a gift when a scout loses a family member. This one is difficult, and particularly tragic. Any ideas?

My thinking was a plant or a tree, something they can remember her by, but I don't know if that may bring less comfort and more pain. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Bereavement gift?

Ugh. I am so sorry. When my mom died, I hated the smell of flowers and I couldn't look at any plants given to us without sobbing. I made my best friend take them (I told her give them away, plant them, whatever you want, but I can't look at them). Just thinking about it now makes me want to cry.

Food or gift certificate is usually standard. The people at my office took up a collection and handed me a card full of money. They said they didn't know what my family could use or where we would want to eat, etc. this way we could choose.

Re: Bereavement gift?

I did an uber eats GC for 2 families I know that just lost a family member.

If you do send food, wait until the week after the services. When my father died, we got so much that week and had to throw some out. Our friends brought over food a week later when we had nothing left and we were so thankful.
