Anti Vaccination _ thoughts?

Just curious, what are your thoughts on those who don’t vaccinate? I honestly never gave much thought to this. My kids are vaccinated, I am lucky that both kids are healthy. I personally feel that unless there is a medical reason not to do so, children should be vaccinated. I recently got an email from my pediatrician stating they will no longer service those who don’t vaccinate as they feel it’s become a public health concern and this really got me thinking about this. I see it often in the news and see states are passing new laws requiring vaccination while other states like Arizona are making it easier not to vaccinate. What are your thoughts on vaccines in general and do you think government has the right to mandate this?

Diseases that had been mostly eradicated, like measles, ,are making a come back due to people not vaccinating.
I do feel it's a public health risk so I do feel it should be mandated.

Isn't it already mandated though? I thought you couldn't send your kid to school without vaccines?

Everyone who can be vaccinated, should be vaccinated - this protects the people who can not be vaccinated (the very young, people with compromised immune systems, etc). I do not think there should be any exceptions unless you medically can not get it (HIV, cancer, certain autoimmune diseases).

People who choose not to vaccinate are reckless and irresponsible and are putting other people's safety at risk. Vaccines only protect those unable to vaccinate if a certain percentage is met (herd immunity).

Ah, my favorite topic. Nothing makes my blood boil like anti-vaxxers.

Anyone without an legitimate medical reason for exemption should be vaccinated, no question asked. The penalties for not vaccinating need to be harsher. An unvaccinated child should not be permitted in school or activities involving other children. No vaccines, no school. Period.

These anti-vax parents are a public health risk. I absolutely agree with the OP’s pediatrician. He/she is well within their right to ban these children from their practice.

Technically yes, but these parents come up with absurd “philosophical” or “religious” reasons to get out of it.

Agreed.

I really don't want my kids around children who aren't vaccinated. THEY are the ones putting everyone else at risk. I have also noticed that in my circle, the anti-vaxers pretty much keep mum on the topic probably because 1. they don't want to hear it and 2. they don't want their kids excluded.

I happen to know 2 people who had children with catastrophic reaction to vaccinations. One was in the early 80's the other was in 1998. I can understand why they and their offspring are anti-vax but catastrophic side effects are not common.

Vaccines do not cause autism, which is why a lot of people today are anti-vax. Those people are horrible, because what they are effectively saying is that they would rather have a dead child from a disease that could have been prevented than a living child with a healthy immune system who "could" have autism; and since we already know that vaccines do not cause autism, is their hatred or fear of a disorder like autism so entrenched that they would rather risk their childrens lives?

So people who do not vaccinate their children are not fit to be parents if that's how they feel.

I do not believe in the government telling us what we can or cannot do with our bodies. Like anything that can be great there isn’t a one stop shop for everyone. Tylenol is awesome when you have a fever or a hang over but some people can’t tolerate it. I love peanut butter but others will die if they have it. Imagine the government said everyone has to eat peanut butter every week?

Medical exemptions are difficult to obtain.

When I was going through infertility I found out I carry an A and C copy of MTHFR. Some of you here who also struggled will be familiar with it. There are connections between carrying MTHFR (some types) and adverse reactions with vaccines. I would LOVE for the government to study this and find connections. Maybe vaccines are not great for every single person ever???

Also my husband was vaccine injured from the MMR shot a million years ago before it was a thing. To say it doesn’t exist is foolish. I love antibiotics but penicillin will kill my brother.

I think it's crazy that these diseases are making a comeback. My SIL lives in Portland and has an infant too young to vaccinate for mmr and it's terrifying.

I actually just saw a news story that FB plans to try to make changes to things like search results for this kind of topic. They apparently won't get rid of the BS propaganda posts but will try to put more trusted results first. I guess it's something but doesn't seem like enough.

I don't think a medical exemption for this would be difficult. If there is a know allergy or issue like an immune disorder or something else preventing you from getting it, I'm sure no doctor would want to chance a reaction.
And I don't necessarily think you should be forced to vaccinate - but if you don't want to, I don't think your child should be able to be a danger to the rest of a school. So, yeah, I don't think that child should be allowed there.
My pediatrician sent an email too saying they would no longer accept patients who refuse to vaccinate and I am totally with them. It stated in their email that anyone with a medical reason not to would still be welcome. They are the kid's doctors - they know what might make it medically necessary to not vaccinate and I trust them to not want to harm their patents.
Of course there could be some adverse reactions- just like with any medication or medical procedure but you wouldn't just write off all of them on the off chance.
That being said, I would like them to continue to improve the safety of vaccines - but we were nearly done with these diseases, and now fear mongering and false info has allowed them to resurface and it's sad.

And this is the reason why everyone who does not have a medical reason not to needs to vaccinate. You need to benefit from the herd immunity.

Based purely on the information provided it does not appear that there is any valid medical exemption in this case. “My husband had an MMR reaction 30 years ago” is not recognized as a valid medical reason to refuse vaccines.

I agree -- but based on her logic she should be very pro vax to protect those who cannot.

Completely illogical analogy. No one will get harmed if you do or do not eat peanut butter. But, by refusing vaccinations, you (your child) could be putting other people in danger. Those who truly CANNOT, for valid medical reasons, get vaccinated, are potentially subjected to serious illness or worse as the result of those who do not get vaccinated

My child was exposed to the measles at 5 months old. As a result, she needed extra shots, was quarantined for 28 days, and is still not eligible for the mmr at 14 months.

Anyone who chooses not to vaccinate their children should also not be allowed on airplanes, schools, malls, or anywhere really. Stay home.

I don’t understand what you mean. He didn’t have a reaction. He was vaccine injured and in the 70’s it was documented in his chart. He suffered life long issues because of it. And to be honest I have no clue why. I am just stating vaccines like ANYTHING in life isn’t a one stop shop for all. So identifying why some have negative reactions and some don’t is paramount.

I don't think anyone would argue with the fact that it would be great if we knew who was likely to have a reaction but I don't see that happening any time soon unfortunately. What do we do in the meantime? Doctors prescribe antibiotics bc the potential benefit outweighs the risk, same as with a vaccine, same as doing a minor surgery, etc.

Not to mention that people will use "vaccine injury" rather than "reaction" to overexaggerate or dramatize what happened as a way to get exemption.

I mean that a child’s father being “vaccine injured” (if they are 100% certain the vaccine was the cause of the injury, which is not easy to prove- I’ve seen the other side of VAERS/AERS and how the reporting works, it is largely guesswork) 30+ years ago is not recognized by the medical community as a reason to not vaccinate that child.

Anti Vaccination _ thoughts?

My friends sister, in her 30s now was vaccine injured - she does not lead a normal life and needs around the clock care.

That being said - my friend still chose to vaccinate her kids.

There is a massive measles outbreak in my county - to the point where my kids would be kept out of school if they weren’t vaccinated. Babies are being vaccinated earlier as well. And friends who send their unvaccinated children to the Waldorf school locally have to keep their kids home for three weeks any time there is an outbreak at religious schools in the area.

My kids have so far received all required vaccinations for their age, but I do not resent people who choose not to vaccinate. I personally know 2 families that have never given their children vaccinations of any kind (they are homeschooled). Yes, we do let our kids hang out with them. They do not believe that the government should tell you what to put or not to put in your bodies. Their reasoning has nothing to do with fear of autism and I think that is a common misconception that anti-vaxxers are all worried about that alone. As with everything, there is a risk associated with vaccines, however small. Lifelong injuries can and do result from vaccines - how can you force people to take that risk? There have literally been millions of dollars paid out in vaccine injuries. There is actually a whole separate vaccine injury court for this purpose.

Also, I think that not all vaccines are created equal. For example, right now I do not intend to have my 11 year old son get the Gardasil vaccine for many reasons. I also do not get a flu shot. That being said, yes of course it is perfectly within the pediatrician's rights to not accept unvaccinated patients.

Anti Vaccination _ thoughts?

My honest opinion:
I do not have a medical degree. I do not stare into petri dishes and microscope slides for 8+ hours per day.
And unless you do, you do not have the qualifications to determine whether or not this is right for your child. Nor do you possess the right to spread these diseases via your unvaccinated children.
They're not going to conduct human studies, so you can throw out the notion that there will be viable stats published based on a scientific study.
I believe that we should trust the medical community and what they know. Not some junk blog/website. the AAP and JAMA publish findings and studies.
