Closest hiking to Long Island

My husband wants to go somewhere for a weekend to go hiking but not far. I’m at a loss since my specialty is planning beach and Disney vacations. Where can we go hiking where we can make a weekend out of it but it’s no more than three hours away?

The Catskills! These are all easy to moderate day hikes: Mt. Tremper, Overlook (stay left at the hotel ruins for a longer hike to a lake), Poet's Ledge, Kaaterskill Falls, Giant Ledge, Buttermilk Falls. Overlook and Tremper have fire towers.

Lots of great restaurants in the area too!

There's a ton in and around New Paltz. Mohonk, Minnewaska, the ice caves, the lemon squeeze, the watchtower etc. Mohonk mountain house is supposed to be a beautiful place to stay.

I forgot to mention my kids would be coming. Ages 5 and 8. Are these places appropriate?

Lemon Squeeze might be tough for the 5 year old. Minnewaska def is, they have paved easier trails and theres also a huge lake at the bottom of the trails so if the weather is nice, you can go swimming with them.

Re: Closest hiking to Long Island

Bushkill Falls was nice. We did the blue trail with a 5 & 9 year old. The river & falls were really something special. It was right after it rained so the terrain was mushy, muddy, and slick but it all added to it. The 5 year old got a bit tired right at the end of it. Lots of stairs at one point.
But really, lovely little hike. It got slightly congested on the foot bridge where the falls were mainly, but otherwise, it was so peaceful, adventurous, and well kept/ preserved. There are a bunch of things to do within 20 minutes near the Shawnee area, East Stroudsburg. Camelbach isn't too far for their adventure park. There's a snake & animal zoo around Shawnee. We broke the trip up with a stop at Palisades Mall. They have an adventure type park in there.

We haven't been since having kids but I remember the ice caves being a little long for me (I'm a weakling though). Minnewaska and Mohonk both have options that would be good for kids though.
