Negotiations with a car dealership
DH and I settled on a car to buy. We went into dealership, told them what (we thought) we wanted and also explained that our two remaining lease payments would have to be absorbed. They agreed, gave us a price and we left.
A few weeks later I used Costco car buying service. They direct me to the same dealership but by this time we upgraded our choice in vehicle. We are given a price (more expensive, obviously) and I call dealer to give CC deposit. When I asked anout forgiving our ONE remaining lease payment Inwas told that aince it was Costco pricing they don’t normally do that. Speak to a manager and was told they would “split the difference” (about 250$). I was just annoyed that they would do this over half a lease payment for a 50k plus vehicle. Plus at our first meeting those were our terms. I told them I would wait it out until next month thinking they would respond right away with a concession haha. I was wrong.
Do you think they’ll reach back or should I just suck up the 250$ and get the damn car?

They won't reach back out. But I had the best experience with a Car Lease company. He took care of all of the negotiations, found the best price and even delivered the vehicle to me!

I bought a car last year with the Costco with program. I got a very good price on my car with no hassle. However, there are rules with the program so they don't have to do something like pay your remaining lease payment. I'd wait until closer to the end of your lease if possible. They may call back. But I found the Costco deal to be very cut and dry.

I would absolutely not eat the $250. Tell them you’ll just go to another dealership. If they’re willing to lose a customer over $250 they’re morons and don’t deserve the sale. You will easily find another dealership who will pick up the payment.

From my experience no dealer ever “eats” the payments. They claim they will, but they really don’t.

Oh if you do the Costco pricing, make sure that they show you the Costco deal sheet. That's actually part of the rules, for them to show you the Costco deal sheet. But make sure that do for transparency.

I guess you can say the same conversely. If you got this far and you are willing to walk away over $250 and start all over again... To me time is money and I would just eat it. Is it annoying, yes, but if you got a great deal on the car it wouldnt be a deal breaker for me.

Well I'm assuming you got a better deal on the car because of the Costco pricing, so in that case I wouldn't expect them to cover the last payment. That concession was part of a completely deal that you made before. This one is different.
But if you can wait one more month this becomes a non-issue. I hope it all works out!

You need to negotiate the price first and then tell them about the payments. If they know upfront, they’ll roll them in.

You're willing to walk away from a $50,000 car over $250? That seems silly. Unless you can get the same deal elsewhere, I'd pay it and move on.

We used the honcker app to lease our last car. By we I mean DH and he got an amazing price on our car. The process was very simple. The only negative was you don’t find out where the dealership is until you agree to the car (I think it has to be within 30 miles or something) so DH had to trek to jersey to get the car. It was WELL worth it though. We got a fully loaded car for $150 a month less than the mid range model at a local dealership.

In my dealership the costco pricing is the lowest price we can sell a car for. That being said, we do split payments and sometimes eat payments for customers all the time. In your specific situation its hard to say how that particular dealerships program works. If you love the car just go with it. They really might not have any room left in the car to eat the whole payment.

We discovered while car shopping recently the dealer mark up is not that high on many vehicles. The dealer showed my husband what they paid for the car we were buying- at the end of the day they may not have he wiggle room to eat the whole payment. Can you wait a month to buy the new car?

Keep in mind, the 250 has to be paid to leasing company. That's something the dealership doesn't want to own or do. They would account for it in the payment of the new contract. But since you are using Costco program, this may nit apply as they have agreed rates (which is why you didn't have to hassle and work for the deal). And even when they said they would take care of it, you have to follow up and make sure it's done as my last car took 3 calls to dealership to make sure it was paid off.

You're looking for your cake and to eat it to.
you negotiated a deal where they were going to eat the payments, then worked a better deal through a car buying service (which the dealership has to pay a fee to). Then expected that the car buying service price would also eat the payments.
You have 2 streams of negotiations with different sets of assumptions and shouldn't expect that they all carry over.
Car dealers don't make a huge amount of money on a new car. Its not like they make 40% on a 50K car. there are a lot of levers that they can use to make money on a car besides actual purchase price, which I'm sure many are aware of, including hidden rebates, volume sale rebates, marking up financing, extended warranties etc
However, If you already have a decently low price on the car, aren't getting a bad deal on the financing, and didn't take the warranty, $250 may actually be a large number to the profit of the deal.
