Is Melatonin safe for kids?

My DD has been having trouble sleeping lately.
She will fall asleep fine but wake up an hour or 2 later and not be able to get back to sleep.

I was wondering if they make Melatonin for kids? And if so, is it safe for them to take?

Re: Is Melatonin safe for kids?

My daughter has unfortunately inherited my terrible sleep issues. They do make melatonin for kids and my Dr. was fine with her taking it. It has been a game changer for us. Good luck!

I just re-read and my daughter has the opposite problem. She can't fall asleep at night but once she is out she stays out. I would give it a shot! Nothing to lose!

Yes! My almost 4 year old son and 5 year old daughter both take it. I usually buy the drops at walmart but they were out of them so I bought some at the Vitamin Shoppe. I am convinced it calms my son down before bed. My daughter is a horrible sleeper, she can't put herself back to bed after she wakes in the middle of the night. I sometimes put some lavender in the diffuser in her room at night to help her.

My daughter just turned 5 and ive been giving it to her for over a year. Its 3mg- we call it a nighttime cough drop. Without it she cant turn her brain off at night. The only side effects i found were that it “could” delay puberty. Im good with that!

Yes, it is safe. Zarbees makes one for kids. There's also Luna for kids which has a small amount of melatonin as well as other sleep inducing ingredients.

I noticed you said your child can fall asleep but wakes up a few hours later. It is important to know that melatonin is only to help you fall asleep. It is not something that will keep you asleep.

My kids are melatonin resistant. Chat Icon

I’ve tried all types of melatonin and my youngest does not fall asleep. It is so frustrating. Everyone I know says to give them an hour before bed and they will fall asleep. It almost never works

Re: Is Melatonin safe for kids?

Thanks all for the replies.
I take Melatonin because it is supposed to help with migraines.
I find it helps keep me asleep, but then again, I am a great sleeper so maybe it's just naturally how I sleep! LOL I have heard it really is just to fall asleep , not stay asleep. So in that case it wouldn't really help her.

But last night she slept much better. I cut out the ipad after dinner. I made her brush her teeth and get in bed and read her book for 30 minutes. (which is also a struggle- see my thread on the parents of school aged children board about her lack of desire to read!) But she did great with it because I bought her a new book that she seemed interested in)

She then went to sleep and slept from 815 pm to 715 am. No wake ups.

So maybe she just needs a better routine.
