Breasfeeding AND FOrmula feeding a newborn?
I am due with DC 2 in Jan. Has anyone successfully breastfed and provided forumla to a newborn if you sent the baby to the nursery at night? Or is it one or the other? I had a really bad experience with breastfeeding/exhaustion/PPA after my first child and want to explore my options. Thanks!!

Yup.
I breastfed my first, but had some complications and the nurses really urged me to send the baby the nursery at night so I could rest. She was BF during the day, FF at night in the nursery. When we came home I only BF/ bottle fed BM and she's a thriving 6 year old today :)
Lots of people do it. As per my LC, nipple confusion isn't really a thing, and nutrients are nutrients.

Yes, I did it, and there was no impact on either of my children not being able to BF (bf them both for 6+ months) The nurses gave me a hard time about it, but stand your grounds if that is what you want!

I FF at night while in the hospital. I wanted my rest. Honestly, what ever is going to happen is going to happen, you can't plan for this stuff. I took my DS in my room the last night bc had horrible reflux from being bottle fed. Once I was home though, my let down was too strong so I mostly pumped and bottle fed or pumped for a few minutes then breastfed. My kids went back and forth from breast to bottle just fine.

Yup. And there were no issues at all. The nurses will try to scare you that one bottle of formula will ruin your chances of breastfeeding but it's not the case. My son breastfed and took bottles of formula and pumped milk with no issues from day one.

Not quite the same but I was pumping while dd was in the nicu and the nurses encouraged me to sleep through the middle of the night session to rest. I pumped and/or nursed at midnight and 6am and slept in between. She had no issues going between bottle and breast (at least not until she was 2 or 3 months old).

At the hospital, I told the nurses to give my DD formula at night so I could sleep. I breastfed her during the day. I was able to exclusively breastfeed her for the next 6 months. So that little formula at night did not ruin my supply.

Yes. I sent my babies to the nursery overnight from 11pm to 5am with the instruction that they were to be fed formula when they got hungry. There wasn't any negative effect from this because I breastfed them for about 13-14 months.

I did both bc my daughter was in the NICU and I kept doing both at home and there were no repercussions. She was a very healthy baby.

Ditto this. For all 3 of my kids. I needed my sleep at night so sent them to nursery and told them to FF while I slept. Then when I got home, breastfed, gave formula, and pumped. Honestly I think it gave me sanity. Don’t think I could’ve exclusively breastfed (had twins first and then a 3rd baby 17 months later).

I did both with no issues. Don't let the LC or nurses bully you into it. I found the LC where I delivered was quite pushy and obnoxious about breast feeding. I just yessed her and told her I was good thanks anyway.

I didn't send my DS to the nursery, but I BF and used the Similac formula for supplementation. It was fine. No nipple confusion, no rejection, and no objection by the hospital. I switched to formula completely when he was 3 months old because although I produced enough milk, it was too lean.

My sister always sends her kids to the nursery and has the nurses give them formula. She then EBFs them once she’s home with no issues. Her last 2, she nursed for well over a year.

So I just had DH bring in formula from home

The sad part is, it isn’t the doctors or nurses who make these decisions. It’s the hospital admins who, in most cases, have zero clinical experience. That’s not to say you can’t get a nurse who is a la leche lunatic, but for the most part they’re rolling their eyes at cost cutting even more than we are (it’s their jobs that are in danger when there’s no nursery).
OP (and anyone else), if anyone gives you a hard time, ask to speak with a patient rep. They keep track of complaints and turn it over to hospital leadership (at least they should be). I absolutely think refusing to provide a baby with formula is a valid complaint. Even if you don’t get the formula, there is a chance someone who can make a difference will hear about the complaints. A complaint means an unhappy customer and unhappy customers bring their business elsewhere. There is no shortage of hospitals on LI.

My twins were in NICU. They gave me a hard time about not BFing at first but it was like you took my twins to NICU, I had a c section and you couldn’t bring my hospital bed in there and wouldn’t let me get up for hours so.... what’s the option here? Formula. I was so annoyed I breastfed when I could. They harassed me about pumping like as soon as I got off the table and told me to work with them, like I can’t feel anything from the neck down and I was so drugged I couldn’t stay away. Let me sleep! I would tell them you are formula feeding right away and then decide if you want to breastfeed and I would absolutely send the baby to the nursery if you want. And you tell them you feel too sick to hold the baby if need be if no one is there at night. Last thing they want is a lawsuit... I hate these hospitals I really do when it comes to maternity care

It’s important for ur body to establish how much milk it needs to produce by either pumping or nursing (this last one being more efficient) during the first 6 weeks. Nursing on demand would be ideal but u can also nurse/pump approx every 2 to 3 hrs just til the body establishes a steady supply (keep in mind that as the baby grows, ur body will adjust with the amount and type of milk it produces). Having said all these, if u feel u’re too tired, or something else, do not hesitate to reach out for help. That’s why the nurses are there for. Express ur concerns to them and what would u like to do, and I’m sure they’ll work with u. Safety caring for the baby is the most important thing...it’s essential for the baby, ur sanity, and even ur supply. Stress is the #1 enemy for breastfeeding and if u’re trying to do it all, u will get stress beyond believe. If they give u a hard time, don’t hesitate to complain either, or have ur DH do it, the nurses are supposed to be there to help u, not to stress u out. Good luck momma and congratulations!

I remember when I had my daughter I just couldn't get the hang of BF right away in the hospital. So she got formula and what little milk I had. When we got home, I did BF. But, I didn't have much milk, so she got both formula and breast milk.
I also never pumped. For some reason, that kinda freaked me out -- being attached to some contraption. But breast feeding seemed more natural to me. So, if I was around, I breast fed, but she got formula other times.
When I went back to work, after 11 weeks, my parents babysat. Since they live near my job, I would go there at lunch time and BF her. But she got both formula and breast milk for about 7 months and then just formula. She's almost 10 years old now, so she survived just fine!
