Large SUVs

Need group advice before this board totally dies (so quiet recently)...

With 3 growing kiddos, I’d like to make the transition from my mid size SUV to a large SUV.

I drive a lot 20k miles a year... and my darn GMC SUV has at least $1k of repairs a year (air conditioning, hoses, wiper motors) and it’s not even 3 years old. I’m now off warranty and am pissed off. It’s important to me to get a reliable car... but I also don’t want to spend a fortune.

Does anyone love their SUV (I do all condition driving in snow and mud so am hesitant to consider a minivan)?

I would probably start by leasing if it makes a difference.

My husband is driving a 2003 Chevrolet suburban...that car lasts (or at least they used to). I would look into that.
I don't know anything about buying out your lease in terms of being cost effective, but perhaps instead of leasing you can would finance and buy the extended warranty. We got the 100K warranty on my Chevrolet just to be covered (I also drive 20K miles per year too so leasing was not an option bc the overage fees can be brutal).

Re: Large SUVs

I'm in the same boat with needing more space...having my 4th and realizing we need a full sized SUV as opposed to our minivan so that we can pull our camper and drive on the outer beaches. We are looking at a suburban/Yukon xl, Nissan Armada, and the Ford Expedition. I need 4 wheel drive and a large towing capacity.

Yep. I’m considering those... I know someone who loves Yukon but I’m concerned after all my problems with my current GMC. Don’t know anyone IRL with the other 2. I don’t mind AWD as it handled nicely in thick, slippery mud and snow recently.

I have an infiniti qx80 that I love. It's huge, but drives beautifully. The Nissan Armada is comparable too. The GMC Arcadia makes an XL version.

I find that American cars give problems way sooner than foreign cars. I had a Chevrolet and it barely lasted 5 years before I had monthly $1000 repairs. Now we only buy foreign. We're on our second Nissan and first Toyota and love them both.

I lease an Infiniti Q60. I have a 20K mile lease. I love the truck. I have 3 boys, 2 in car seats, one in a booster. The truck drives like a car and I'm for the most part very happy with it. I did have a problem once in icy conditions with it but I figured it was just me but then someone else asked me if I had trouble with its handling in the snow because she did and now I'm wondering if its the truck itself. I don't know. But I do love it.

I also had a Honda Pilot. That's a more spacious truck. Its great for its utility. I personally didn't like the way it handled, because it handles like a truck, but I had no problems with it at all.

My limited anecdotal evidence is the exact opposite. The only cars I've ever had a problem with were a Honda and an Isuzu. My Dodge Dakota is 18 years old, and my Chrysler PT Cruiser is 16 years old. I only buy "American" cars... even though Chrysler is owned by Fiat now, and Mercedes for a while, so it's technically a "foreign" company.

I never have had serious problems with any cars. I had a old, old Chrysler that ran well til it expired at very old. I had a Lexus which was amazing. I loved that car. My mom drives it now and is approaching 150k miles without major issues. I’m shocked that I have 3 serious problems now with a car that’s not even 3 years old.

I have 4 dc and am on my second suburban. I love it. I’ve never had had any kind of problem. Great in the snow, for towing, holds literally everything. And I live in the city so I am always parallel parking-it handles great and drives like a car.

I have an odyssey and I love it. I drove it all winter in the snow and it handle just fine. Once you go sliding doors you’ll never miss a SUV.

I really love my Ford Explorer. It has a third row and I think it drives great. If you're looking to lease, Ford offers various leasing options when it comes to how many miles you get a year. The Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Expedition are all really great too.

Re: Large SUVs

I drive an Audi Q7. We chose it in part for the size, when compared to it’s competitors. BMW is coming out with a x7 which is supposed to be pretty big. The x5 wasn’t big enough for me. We had it for three years and it was fine with one kid, but with another on the way I wanted to size up.

Mine is AWD. It handles great in the snow. May depend on what level you get, I am not sure. I have the Citadel.

I agree! We were looking for a while and ended up narrowing it down to 2, the traverse and lexus gx. We really liked the gx but as soon as we tried the traverse high country, we absolutely loved it!!!! Super spacious, more than we were expecting! We’re now so spoiled with how much space we have that we’re contemplating in getting either the suburban or yukon next time! Lol!!

This is great! I actually got more ideas from everyone.

For those of you that have a Chevy... any major problems with it in terms of reliability?

I agree with getting spoiled by space!
