http://abcnews.go.com/US/emotions-high-grisly-details-surrounding-2013-slaying-florida/story?id=53053652&cid=clicksource_4380645_6_heads_posts_headlines_hed

I’m dumbfounded by this! Mother meets a creepy guy offering to buy clothes for her kids, gets in his van with her 3 kids. Gets to store he wants 8 year old to buy high heels!! After that You have a bad feeling about him yet still let your 8 year old walk away alone with him??!! I could maybe give her a break she was desperate but after the high heels and the fact that he said his wife was meeting them there and didn’t show up. You still let him take your 8 year old somewhere alone?? WTF unreal inexcusable . I can’t even comprehend this I’m super paranoid about everything I don’t know how as a mother she let this happen.

Re: Does this infuriate anyone else?

What I find most infuriating is that this monster who was let out of prison being known to be a violet sex offender. The state KNEW this would happen and did nothing to protect the children of that state.

"Before his arrest for Cherish’s death, Smith had a long criminal history dating back to the 1970s related to lewd and lascivious conduct. Doctors determined that he met the criteria of a violent sexual predator after arrests in 1999"

I don't understand why monsters like this get to walk free. They should have to wear a scarlet letter.

I agree that the mother was a fool for allowing her and her children to get near this man.

Re: Does this infuriate anyone else?

Just judging by the title in the link address and what you wrote, I don't think I can read this story.
I just can't lately with harm coming to kids.

But yes, you have one job as a parent and that is to protect your kids. One job.
I, like you, am overly overly watchful with my DD to the point it's probably not even healthy, but I would lay down my life before letting her go off with some creeper.

The more details that come out I think she needs to be investigated. Like maybe she agreed to let him have her for money or something? He wanted her to try on high heels for him, ones you said that you wouldn’t even wear and that wasn’t a red flag for you to grab your kids and run to security? Then you call 911 and say why did he take
My daughter I hope he doesnt rape her or murder her? Obviously the thought crossed your mind you don’t protect your child it’s really unreal.

Re: Does this infuriate anyone else?

I saw this on the news last night, and I also wondered what kind of mother is she to take her kids and just go along with a stranger.
It's horrific what happened to that child, and the mom will have to live with that for the rest of her life.

The guy should have never been let out of prison.
I hope he hangs for this heinous crime. Lethal injection is too kind, too humane compared to the way this child died.

Something is just not right. That 911 call is very telling.

Does this infuriate anyone else?

I didn’t read your link, but i had been following this story. I don’t even know where to start. Meeting someone in a store. Then going with them in their car to another store bc they’ll buy McDonald’s and clothes. Then the moms 911 call saying I hope he doesn’t kill her. Or rape her.

All I know is how upsetting this is. The medical examiner ha store take a break from testifying bc she was too emotional. The ooor girl died a a slow and torturous death. May she rip.

Re: Does this infuriate anyone else?

So the article isn't very clear she let the kids go alone to the mcdonalds in walmart with him or did they all go and then him and the 8 year old disappeared? either way she should have had all those kids right next to her the whole time.

Either way I don't think she should have gone in the car to begin with she is lucky he didn't rape and kill all of them.

And that 9-1-1 call is very interesting why say all that but if she was emotional all those things could have been going through her head and she was just saying that. I would think if my daughter went missing I would be thinking I hope no one kills her rapes her etc.

I saw this on the news last night. I hate to say this, but I think the guy promised the mom money or clothing or what ever and she is not dealing with a full deck. She sort of pimped her kid out to him. I think she is complicit. Her call was so strange. It completely sickens me and I cannot fathom a parent doing what that mother did in any circumstances. Ever.

Yeah, it's just so horrifying. I don't know whether the mom was desperate or if there is something more sinister here. But you know what? When I was just scrolling through the article and I got to his picture, I actually thought he was one of the lawyers with the way he was dressed and had the glasses on his head. I know a pedophile doesn't have a certain "look" but there is nothing about him that looks creepy, to me anyway. So maybe he had this warm and fuzzy grandpa demeanor going on and the mom felt she could trust him. I don't know. I just hope that little girl gets justice.

Yes! All of this!

As for the mother I don't think anything other than her trusting this man happened. I read a few articles on this and didn't see anything that she offered her daughter to him for money. I would think that would be the defenses argument right from the start. Unless I missed something about that. I just think she was desperate because she didn't have a lot of money. He offered help and told her his wife would be meeting them. Manipulated the whole situation. As they do. Chat Icon Chat Icon

May that poor girl rest in peace.

And god bless those jurors. I would never be able to sit a jury like this. Absolutely never.

Agree with all this. I think the mother was hoping for some help and so she didn't listen to her gut and now will forever have to live with that.

People like him should never be allowed to see daylight. I can't stand the fact that sex offenders walk the street among innocent people and children. Lock them up and throw away the key.

I just think she excercised very very poor judgment to go -with her kids- in the car with a stranger and to let her kid go off with someone she JUST met.

Yes they have the death penalty. Part of me wants that for him, but the other part thinks that’s too easy.

I’d prefer for him to get beaten every day for the rest of his life.

I also read more info on the situation. The girls parents were never married and were in a custody battle for years. Supposedly the judge didn’t like either situation for the girl, but it was also advised that she not live with the mother bc of lack of money and mental heath issues that led to poor decision making.

I think the mom was just desperate for clothes, food, etc. there also was a mental capacity issue it seems.

That poor girl though suffered so much.

I also know the mother lost custody of her two other daughters after the murder and they went to life with an aunt in Australia

Thank God!!!

I wish someone would cut his throat and let him choke to death! A lethal injection is too easy.

This certainly explains a lot. The mother had mental health issues. No way a rational parent would allow their child out of their sight after the high heels. She knew it to because she told the 911 operator. So tragic that little girl was failed to be protected by first the judge that gave the Mom custody even though it was reccomeded she not get it and then by her mom.
