Moving...where do I go???

So, my husband and I have decided that we are going to move. We have to move. The house we bought right after we got married and the house that we brought both of our children home to is just not right for us. We are not in love with the layout. The flood insurance is going higher and higher every year. We are not in love with the neighborhood...

That being said...how do you figure out where to go??? I know I have to stay on LI. I'm a teacher 18 years in. I can't leave my district now. My oldest DD will start Kindergarten in Sept. It seems like so much pressure to figure out where to go. My decision can impact their futures so much!

We are looking for a middle class town, NOT near the water. Some place with a nice "town center" essentially...or stores/restaurants that we can walk to. Good school district of course...strong academics and good music dept/sports. I work between exits 19 and 20 on the Southern State. Any suggestions or words of wisdom??

Thank you.

Are you looking to stay in Nassau or Suffolk? North shore or south shore? So much goes into deciding a town?

I'm born and raised South shore, Nassau. But honestly, I love the North shore and I don't mind Suffolk at all. I just don't know too much about it. I'm open to either. And maybe that's why I'm having such a hard time.

Garden city is beautiful and seems to have what you are looking for but is probably more upper middle class to wealthy. Maybe St. James or Smithtown if you are willing to go farther east.

Moving...where do I go???

Check out the reports for the % of HS seniors who go on to four-year colleges. Also, check out the schools who offer Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language and Spanish starting in K.
It sounds like it would be Oceanside (up North, away from the water) Baldwin with Oceanside Schools, RVC, Merrick, Bellmore

We live in GC South, which is franklin square school district. It's a great neighborhood, and we are really close to nassau blvd which is a little town with shops you can walk to. I like that I can walk to dunkin, the deli, the pizza place, the nail place, etc. and not have to get into a car and drive. We are also within walking distance of two parks.

With that said, when any decent home gets listed here, they go VERY quick. You'd have to get in to see it as soon as it gets listed and get an offer in right away. They are mostly capes around here.

Other great towns are floral park and stewart manor. Both have town areas to walk to (covert ave is stewart manor and tulip ave is floral park).
Only downside is stewart manor is zoned for sewanhaka which isn't the best high school (it's not that bad though IMO). The elementary school is stewart manor school which is a fantastic school. Only downsides to floral park are that it's expensive and taxes are really high. I know people who have average sized homes there and pay over 15k/year in taxes AND they grieve

DH grew up in East Meadow, my ILs are still there. The only box it doesn't check off on your list is the walkable town center, but it's close to everything.

If you like the North Shore of Suffolk I agree with the Smithtown/St. James/Nesconset area. Stony Brook is also an excellent choice but that would be a killer commute to Exit 19/20 on the Southern State.

Re: Moving...where do I go???

I love West Islip. We technically don’t have our own little town center but Babylon village is right here and that’s always fun

The town is very family friendly. A lot of activities for children, etc.

Farmingdale. It’s sort of a forgotten town but has a nice small town Main Street with tons of restaurants. Easy commute to the city if needed and close to all highways.

Diverse district. While not one of the ones that people talk about as best of it’s still a great district. Good programs etc.

House range from 300s and up. Higher end over near the golf course.

If you work near exit 19 of the SS I would not move to Stony Brook/St. James. I commuted from exit 25 on the SS to Stony Brook and it wasn't pretty. You're looking at over an hour each way.

How about Rockville Centre or Babylon? Huntington if you wanted north shore?

This! Floral park for sure. DH and I were house hunting for 3 years. Finally convinced him to look at floral park/bellerose village but we ended up in Westchester. We did put an offer in on a house in floral park at one point though. Love the community and that pool is aaaamaaazing!

Franklin Square, Rockville Center, Floral Park come to mind. I also like the Farmingdale, Bethpage areas. Perhaps Babylon or West Islip if you are willing to go into Suffolk, obviously staying north of 27a.

Re: Moving...where do I go???

All great ideas above, but I think a lot depends on your budget!

I grew up in the area you work. Off the top of my head, I'd recommend Lynbrook or Rockville Centre.

I think it depends on your budget (for house and taxes), what your criteria is for school districts.

Bellmore and Merrick could work (north of Merrick Rd. you don't have issues with flooding or proximity to water). They have a small "town area" not as big as others, but it's there, are close to trains and highways, parks, beaches, well rated schools.

My very good friend lives here and she is very happy. I wish my community was more like Farmingdale.

We are Massapequa Park but Farmingdale Schools and we border So. Farming dale. We loooove our area. Farmingdales Main Street has so many good restaurants and things to do. It's centrally located and easy access to so many highways and shopping. We are super happy with this area. While the school district may not be rated top 10 they have a lot of activities .The familys are very involved and so far everyone we have encountered is down to earth and super friendly.
