Please HELP....(long)

I'm soooo tired!!!!

Jack will be 4 weeks on Monday. He ate and slept like a champ as soon as we brought him home. He was sleeping for 4 hour stretches and had gotten up to 5-6oz during feedings. (He's big....weighs over 10lbs) This week....he's at 3 hours between feedings (sometimes not sleeping at all in between) and down to 4 oz. He sleeps very well during the day but fusses like crazy at night (between 11-2). He's gassy/farts alot. Lots of grunting. He often makes a grunt that sounds like he's clearing his throat (ahem). I don't know if this is normal. Last night he was up and crying to be fed every 2 hours (rooting as if I hadn't fed him all day). I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I feel like his progress is going in the wrong direction.

He's really a very calm tempered baby.....not colicy at all. I think it's really the gas and we're not getting him to pass it correctly. We're using ventaire bottles and I've tried using some avent bottles in the past 2 days. We used mylicon drops twice (I think 2 weeks ago) and he just got bubbly at the mouth from it. We're feeding him Similac Advanced. I also think he might have some reflux. He often spits up (not alot of fluid) when we lay him flat in the bassinet, which we have on an incline to begin with.

Any thoughts???????

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

I use advent as well and just recently switched to the next size nipple and it made a world of difference for my DD. As for the gas she also suffered from this and not until just recently (she is almost 8 weeks) did it get better. I think it takes time for their intestines to iron out all the kinks. I would lie her on her back and lift her legs up and down. This seemed to help release some of it. Also, I found that burping during feedings help reduce the amount of gas she has later. She is a very hard burp but it's worth the extra time to get them up.

Re: Please HELP....(long)

we gave DD gripe water in a bottle to get her to swallow it. i could never get her to take it from that little dropper. you could try the same with mylicon.

you may want to try the belly & back rubbing/massage. that has helped some girls here. the bicycle legs too.

have you been to the ped. for your 1 month appointment yet? i would definitely mention it to the doctor. my ped. is super helpful with that kind of stuff. she always wants to know about sleeping/eating habits.

I think what you are going through is completely normal. He may be going through a growth spurt and that may be why he's rooting to eat every two hours. 4 oz is completely normal for a baby his age, as well.

As for the grunting and passing gas, Molly does that too. Sometimes she's pushing so hard, she wakes herself up. As long as it's just noises, I wouldn't worry. It's when it becomes painfull and they cry, that I would want to do something to help.

A lot of babies just have fussies times during the day or night. That may just be what is happening. He will grow out of it. As my mom told me, every stage, whether your love it or hate it, they grow out of. The spitting up is normal and unless he seems to be in pain after feedings, it may not be Acid Reflux. I'm not all that familiar with AF, so ask some of the other moms who have babies with it. They would be more helpful.

Re: Please HELP....(long)

Sounds like it could be a/r too. My DD has it and had a lot of the same symptoms. I've read that babies with a/r tend to overeat to make the pain feel better but in the end it actually makes it worse. Sounds like it couls also be gas. Their little digestive systems are so new and fragile. Zantac and Mylicon helps my DD.

You need to be aware that with the mylicon drops you need to use them faithfully for a week to ten days before you see any results!! They aren't just a one time deal, so make sure that you use them everyday and after a week or two, it will improve!

Good Luck!!!

Thank you for this. We used them on 2 seperate occasions and they did absolutely nothing. I couldn't figure out why everyone recommended them so much. Now it makes so much more sense!!!

Re: Please HELP....(long)

Sounds like maybe his days and nights are mixed up. My 2nd son went through this and OMG was I tired!

Mylicon drops should help with the gas. Try swaddling him up tight at night too. My first son LOVED that!

From what my doctor told us Mylicon has to be used consistently for it to really help. We put it in every bottle that our DD had.

Re: Please HELP....(long)

I think the reflux is causing Jack to be cranky. He is acting like he is hungry and then when you feed him it soothes hm for the time being and then he gets fussy again because he is eating to much and then spits up...The same thing happened with my DD. Now i space her meals 3-4 hours and she is a different child. If your DS is cranky before the 3 hours you should up his OZ's. Hope this helps..
