Homework with 2 kids

Last year it was half day kindergarten where we live so my younger DS did it when he got home and my older son, who was in 2nd grade, did it later.
Now they are going to be in 3rd and 1st coming home at the same time bc they'll be in school together.
What do you do about homework time? They usually do it at the kitchen table, but that was separate times. I don't want them to fight. Can't in the dining room bc the table will scratch.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Homework with 2 kids

I have twins and they had the same homework this year. I had them do it at different times when I could. Otherwise they would cheat off each other or my son would just rush to beat his sister.

We are making a work station for the kids in the basement and I am hoping eventually one can go down there when they are older.

Homework is complete chaos though. My 4 year old comes home from school like a tornado letting all of his energy out. Not looking forward to sept

Homework with 2 kids

Why couldn't they do it at the same time at opposite ends of the table? Then they won't be in each other's way.

Do what works well for you and the kids, but personally I would establish rules now and let them learn how to do it at the same time. Otherwise, you may be doing homework for a couple of hours a day.
Start them at the same table and then separate if you have to. GOOD LUCK!

That's what I would do too. Opposite ends of the table so they have their own work space.

This! Last year homework was such a nightmare. Between my then 4 year old running around while trying to do the twins homework, and my daughter giving me a hard time at homework time, then the twins trying to race at homework it was brutal. I started to have the twins do it separately and it was still hectic. This year I have my 5 year old starting kindergarten. I am NOT looking forward to homework this year Chat Icon

Re: Homework with 2 kids

I saw some article on FB that a certain district or area in Florida banned homework for elementary school.
I am SOOOO onboard with that!

Dr. Hynes in Pat-Med wants to eliminate HW in grades K-6. Rather than HW, he wanted kids to play outside together & spend more time with family (preparing dinner together, reading, games, etc.) He put a survey out to parents and teachers...I never heard the results though.

I'm friends with him on FB because he went to HS with my DH. So I see all the stuff he is doing. He is amazing. He doubled recess time too.
He is the ideal Superintendent... he really cares about the kids and not just test scores and numbers to make himself look good.
I wish he was the Super in my district!

I seriously have anxiety thinking about homework this year! Torture!!! In K the twins had the same homework too for the most part and it was not fun. Who wasn't better than who, who was faster. Blah!

We take turns. One kid gets help at a time. They can do handwriting or writing solo and I just check it over.

My mom always said she would have had more if she could by pass doing homework. It really is so such a pain. My youngest enters Kindergarten so this will be the first year I'm doing hw with 2. I'm dreading it more than anything.

My kids are the sames ages as yours
They did it together at opposite ends of the dining room table. My older dc pretty much did his independently and I would just bounce between the 2 as needed

I agree with this. Time is precious and as they get older, spreading out homework throughout the afternoon/evening will be a real annoyance. Let them do it at the same time.

Yes...my kids know I don't take crap. You sit and you do your homework, or you don't get TV/iPad/dessert/whatever. After a few times of getting privileges taken away, they get the message.

Re: Homework with 2 kids

This is one of the main stresses in my house. I hate homework and don't see the need for it. I have both my kids do it at the same time because let's face it, who wants to drag out homework time for hours, and who has that time? They do it together, the problem is that they both always have questions or need help and try to outdo each other with who gets my attention and I'm usually cooking dinner too so it's hectic and I can barely even help with the homework because the "common core" way of doing things makes no sense to me so I end up teaching them MY way which makes it worse. Ugh even writing that stressed me out, so not looking forward to this!!

Homework with 2 kids

There are many parents in my district that "opt out" of homework (at elementary level). There are a ton of studies out that that shows that homework is not beneficial to academic learning and just adds stressors. We had no homework last year (4th Grade) except for projects and nightly reading and it was our best year yet.

Oh I wish we could do this! The homework is redundant and annoying. Reading, yes. Dittos upon dittos, no. I was surprised that the majority of the parents that responded to a question about having no homework in our district, are actually FOR homework.

I think it also depends on the family schedule. For example, if your kids take the regular bus home and have no sports or other activities, then yeah I guess having from 2 or 3pm until the evening to do some homework isn't terrible. However my DH and I both work so by the time we get them home from after care it's 6pm, everyone is starving so we have to cook and eat and by then everyone is tired and it's late and we have to start dittos? UGH, and those are just the days that there is no baseball or gymnastics practice/games which I admit on some of those days they can't even finish the homework. I am all for well-rounded children and also for family time and I'm not going to eliminate everything else in our lives just so that they can put spelling words in alphabetical order.

Why don't your kids do their homework in aftercare ? I know with our aftercare program at school, and the local offsite one, they offer help for the kids to do their homework there.
