Would this policy deter you from going to a salon?
Would you be deterred from going to a salon (or returning to your salon) if it posted a new policy that stated the following:

Please give at least 24 hours notice if you must cancel an appointment. If you fail to give 24 hours notice, don't show up, or are 15 minutes late there will be a 20% fee added to your next bill.
************************************
The salon is of course keeping in mind that there are always extenuating circumstances that are sometimes beyond our control that would allow the fee to be waived.

I'd be pretty annoyed by it for sure. I voted yes, it would deter me from going to the salon - but knowing how hard it is to find a great hairstylist, I might have to suck it up

I agree. I would hate the policy and would be tempted to go elsewhere, but if I loved my stylist I would suck it up and deal with it.

i had a doctor like that....if i cancel less than 24 hours, i would get charged my regular fee. somtimes you can't help getting sick at the last minute

That is different. This particular salon is thinking of implementing this for repeat offenders.

I brought this up and was told that 99% of the time if the stylist is running late it is because the client before you was late to their appointment... it's all trickles down

The 15 minutes late thing is ridiculous. I think that would cause me anxiety the day of appointment about driving there and getting there on time. I am always on time for my appointments, but what if I ran late or hit traffic.

Um hell no. There are a ton of good stylists out there. They aren't doing the queen of England's hair on a daily basis, they don't need to act like it.

That is different. This particular salon is thinking of implementing this for repeat offenders.
On the one hand, if a client is a repeat offender, I can understand the policy. There's a difference between an emergency and regularly being a bad customer. Then again, how often do people go to the salon? Even when my hair was super short I still only went every 2 months and I can't see how they would have tracked my attendance. 
Ultimately, I think it's a bad practice and might drive customers away. I'd be insulted because I am never late and never cancel last minute and would only do so in a real emergency. But as others said, I like my stylist so I might suck it up (and my stylist is a part owner so I can't see her doing that to me should I once be really late.)

When I was doing hair, people would do this all the time, you have to realize when you cancel, the stylist could have takennsomeone else, and most stylist work on commission so you're taking $$ out of someone's pocket. I'd keep the 24 hrs policy but I'm not so sure about charging for it. Maybe if they were a repeat offender. Thing is people do this all the time and think nothing of it. They expect the world, get annoyed when you can't accommodate, but then think nothing of canceling a 3 hr keratin the day of, and when that happens guess what the stylist gets paid that day. Zilch! Sorry but the stylist in me somewhat agrees with this policy! Kept your dammn appointment. Serious situations excluding of course!

I agree and my keratin takes 5hrs to do, so my stylist is pretty much working on me for the day. I think the 15 min. late is a little much - that's the only thing I wouldn't like.

Yep. Shit happens. God forbid there's an emergency the day of or the night before. Calling to cancel a hair appt is. Not a priority when dealing with an emergency.
I get it, my sil is a hairdresser and she's always mad when people don't show up or give notice. She loses money. But again someone comes up, I may not think to call

It would definitely deter me. There are a million salons with tons of great hairdressers that don't have that policy. I wouldn't hesitate to switch. It would be annoying to find a new hairdresser, but I've had to do it before.
My job is similar in that I do not get paid if clients do not show up, and it sucks, but there's a lot of competition, so you need to sometimes suck up the loss of money one time for an overall gain. You can't think in just that annoying moment - and it is very irritating and rude for people to no-show, but in the long run, I'm still going to make money from taking this client. If someone is a repeat offender I just stop booking them and explain why, and refer to them to someone else who may have a little more flexibility to accommodate. Then I hustle to find a new client to fill that spot.
It's annoying, but if you work in that field, you know what you're signing up for.

My salon does this but really only holds repeat offenders to it. I don't blame them at all. They lose money when a client doesn't show up and for an in demand stylist, someone else ouldnhave had that appointment.
I still go there and fully support their decision to have the policy.

I really don't see the problem if a salon wants to reserve the right to penalize someone who keeps cancelling at the last minute or who is chronically late. That's rude and it hurts the stylists. I'm surprised at how many people would leave a salon over it. If you don't miss appointments, then this policy will only help you.

But if someone is on time all the time and one day hits traffic or has problems parking or something happens and they are late, they shouldn't be penalized

It would not deter me. I have never cancelled last minute or been late. I always book the first appt to avoid my stylist being backed up and god forbid I was late I would call or if I had to cancel my stylist would probably waive the charge cause she would know it must have been bad for me to cancel.
My guess is the salon is having issues and they need to do something to try to deter it. I would not hold it against the salon.

I am one of hte few here but it wouldn't deter me from going. If I am going ot cancel an appointment, generally i know ahead of time. and from what you are saying it seems that they are understanding with people that aren't repeat offenders and wouldn't charge you say if you woke up with the flu or had an emergency, or hit traffic. things do come up for sure.
as long as they have a heart and are understanding, I don't see a problem with it.

I feel like this policy was put in place and really is meant to target a handful of people that do it all the time, but they need to make it a blanket policy for "everyone" so no one gets singled out.

At my salon, it's only repeat offenders.
I forgot to call to cancel my appt while I was in the hospital after having DD (she came early). They had just started the policy and it was a big deal. I joked about whether or not this was a legit reason to miss an appt

I think it needs to be clearer. My next appt could be just for a touch up on my roots, which is like $60.
Or it could be for a full head of hair painting, cut and blow dry, where I'm dropping nearly $300 on my hair.
If I wasn't so loyal to my colorist, and if she wasn't a total sweetheart (who genuinely wants my hair to be healthy and look good), I wouldn't tolerate a 20% cancellation fee. I'm a regular customer, book my appts 6 months in advance, and pretty much on time for every appt, If I had to cancel, there's a waitlist of clients hoping for an opening.
