Disney spring break 2018 or August

We are currently trying to decide what to do. We are a family of four with kids who will be 4 and 6 and are looking to stay at the Polynesian. So do we go spring break 2018 or end of August 2018? End of August is hot and potentially rainy but less crowded and cheaper. Spring break is better weather but probably much more crowded. Ugh. What would you do?

We did California and Disney LAND during Spring break.

It was great... not terribly crowded, the best weather, and less expensive than Florida equivalent. I like the set up of the park better than Florida. We did some sightseeing too, which was very interesting.

The only negative is a long plane ride (my little one was terrible), but your kids are old enough to be able to tolerate it.

Otherwise, if you are set in Florida, I'd do late August but just because I don't mind the heat.

I would never do Spring Break. Way too crowded. I've done the last week of August. It's hot and rainy. But the short lines make up for it.

I'm surprised to see you write it was cheaper than FL. Our flights alone to CA are $500 each, that is the price for pretty much the entire Summer. Hotels are $$$ there. The hotel we are staying at is almost $500 a night since they have insane taxes. Granted we are going at the end of June, but I would think Spring Break would be more. Fortunately we have miles and points, so the whole trip isn't much at all for us, but I definitely don't think it's cheaper than FL.

Re: Disney spring break 2018 or August

I've done Disney during Spring Break and it's crowded, but it wasn't terrible. I've also been there during Thanksgiving week, MK on the Monday before Thanksgiving and that was WAY worse crowd-wise.

I would choose Spring Break because August would likely be too hot for me. It was in the 90s when I was there last April and that for me was way worse than the crowd.

I think it depends on which bother you more, crowds or heat.

I would probably choose Spring Break due to temperature. And not everyone has the same Spring Break.

I was surprised too. I priced out a lot of options... Spring break prices were really high in Florida. Hotels tripled in price that week vs the week before or after and the flights ran $400 (nonstop flight from not Newark). It was cheaper to go to Cali (our flight was just over $400 PP from JetBlue, we used Burbank one way. The hotels were normal priced being that their spring break was one week different from ours (so 1/3 surge pricing). I was seriously considering going to Ireland vs Florida: it was a similar cost! A side note is we don't stay at Disney resorts... and planned vacation in January.

The benefit of doing it in summer is it would have been nice to have more than one week due to the travel days.

We avoid Disney at spring break time like the plague!!!

We have taken a few trips right before or right after Labor Day and even though it's hot/humid, the low crowd levels make it so much more enjoyable. I would much rather pick hot than crowded.

Also, don't know if you care, but Disney historically does "free" dining at the end of the summer.

Disney spring break 2018 or August

I've done both... Spring break this year and August two years ago. Spring break was 1000x times better than August. I will NEVER go in August again.

Can I ask why you'd never do August again? Give me the bad and the ugly. I have to make a decision soon.

I would, and have done, spring break. We've done both April break and February break. Yes, it's crowded. But if you plan well and set priorities you'll be fine.

I personally would never go in August. I hate the heat. Today (78 degrees) is too hot for me. Heat plus crowd is a a total nightmare for me.

August was still very much crowded as most of the country has not gone back to school yet. The heat was unbearable and rained quite a bit. Mid 90's everyday. My kids were miserable and it was more stressful than fun

Spring Break was still crowded but because "spring break week" varies so much from state to state, even district to district, it never felt overwhelming, like every kid and their family was there at one time.
Weather was beautiful and a lot less humid. Mid 80's during day, 70's at night.

Now this is just my own personal experience and someone else may have had the opposite. But if I were to do it again, it would have to be spring break time.

FTR... I stayed off Disney property. But that has no bearing on my experience.

Thanks so much! Have you gone the last week of August? From what I hear it is a lot less crowded then. But I just don't know whats worse - unbearable heat or unbearable crowds.

We have been the last week of August, and most people are back to school by then. Very few places start school AFTER Labor Day these days. Especially down South and in FL, where many of the crowds come from (passholders that visit when school is out on weekdays)

And are the crowds really as low as people say they are? Does it make up for the heat?

You definitely won't walk right onto rides, Disney is busy all year round these days! But, it's definitely less busy than Spring Break, Winter Break, Fourth of July week and December weekends (those are the peak times that we have been).

Have you been to Disney? Most of the attractions have a/c, so you aren't sitting in blazing sun the entire day. It's HOT, but manageable IMO. When it's hot, we like to do the parks, then swim mid day, and go back in the evening. Or just swim all morning/afternoon, and go in the evening. That plan worked out great at the Yacht Club, since their pool is amazing.

No the week I went was the first week of August. I live in VA and my kids go back to school the 3rd week of that month.

If you chose to go the last week in August the crowds may be a tad less but no less than a spring break IMO.

So essentially same crowd level but much hotter.

The crowd level definitely is low the last week of August. We used to go that week all the time - even with the heat, it is completely doable. We went the last week of August/first week of September every year for at least 7 years. (We only switched to October because we go to Food & Wine.)

I've always found this guide to be pretty accurate.

I have done both and would choose August any day of the week! Actually we are going back this August again. We went last spring break and it was SOOOOO crowded and HOT! I can deal with one or the other - but not both. I personally can stand the heat a little more than crowds. Disney does a good job of having lines inside and fans. I could not handle the shoulder to shoulder crowds.
