Which camera?

We are going on a cruise and would like to get a small point and shoot. I'm loyal to canon. Do we go with the $110 elph with "eh" reviews, or the $229 next series level? I do have a dslr to capture most family moments, and we do use our cell phones. This would really just be for this vacation and maybe other events once in a blue moon where we don't want to lug around the dslr

ETA: I appreciate everyone's viewpoint of phone over point and shoot, but my DH and I for various reasons prefer to have a point and shoot. Tia for your thoughts on whether to splurge the extra $120 on the better model.

I would get the one with better reviews since you probably want your vacation pics to come out nice. I got sick of lugging my DSLR and bought a Sony RX100 II and I love it. So small, and takes great pictures and awesome movies. But, it's pricey.

We will be on a cruise on international waters and I'd rather not have my phone on me at all out and about. I know I can turn off certain cellular svc., but I don't want to take a very expensive risk that I may not do something correctly and get stuck with roaming charges. And maybe because I am a little bit of a hobby photographer, I just feel like I take better photos with a camera than cell phone. Not to say quality of the photo product, but actual ability to frame things, play around with settings, etc. I'm just not a fan of phone cameras other than a for a random out and about pic.

I don't think you need a point and shoot if you have a cell phone. If you are a hobby photog, I feel like the DLSR plus cell phone is totally a fine combo. You can put the phone on airplane mode and just take pics with it.

DH is an avid photographer. When we travel and he doesn't want to lug his big camera around, he uses his point and shoot.

He had an Olympus Tough for years and it took great pictures in all conditions, cold, heat, rain, underwater, etc. That camera lasted about 7 years. When he was replacing it, he looked at the Canon Powershot D waterproof.

He opted for the newest Olympus though - said its more durable, crushproof, shockproof, etc. He likes not having to worry about being delicate with it especially when we travel.

The big differences between a cell phone and a Point and shoot is that cell phones have a fixed aperture and cannot zoom (unless you add on lenses). The sensors on most cell phones are as good as what you'll get on a a point and shoot.

I would focus on a P/S with a long zoom since that'll give you the edge over your phone.

I'm going throw another option out there. Have you considered a MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera). It's basically a DSLR without the flip up mirror (instead with a "digital mirror") which shrinks the camera. It has lenses that switch out (that are typically smaller than DSLR lenses). They start around 400-500 and go up. This is a camera that can provides you EVERYTHING in the dslr at the size of a Point and shoot.

That sounds really interesting! I love cameras! We decided to go with the canon sx620, just over $200. It was as much as we could stretch our budget to. Hopefully once the girls are a little older I'll be able to play around with photos and cameras a little more. Long gone are the days my star refund purchased a new camera or accessory....
