5yo battles over clothes

Any tips bc I'm losing my mind here. Dd is so picky lately, wanting everything pink, dresses, tutus, etc. She only has so many that fit the bill and has practically brand new clothing she approved of in the store she now refuses to wear. Not to mention a big pile of jeans that haven't been worn in months. I try to give choices and let her have a say but somehow there is still a battle more often then not.

I gave up for the most part. My picky 6 yo dresses herself.
Good luck!

Re: 5yo battles over clothes

OMG my 6 year old refuses to wear jeans too.
She will wear jeggings and leggings but not jeans and not any pants with a button or snap and zipper.
In the store she will swear that she will wear it and she'll wear it once or twice and that's it.
I am not sure what it is- I am assuming it's a comfort issue. I know leggings are so much more comfy than stiff jeans even for myself.

For now I just go along with it, but I am not buying her anymore jeans or chinos or anything like that because it's a waste of money- no matter what she says at the time.

My son is 3 and has already started this. He refuses to wear pants with snaps - he says they are too tight. They are SO loose!!!! So now I have 3-4 pairs of pants that have barely been worn. I also have to try to find jeans with an elastic waist which limits what he can wear. so annoying!!!

Re: 5yo battles over clothes

My almost 4 year old will battle me with clothing. He does not want to wear jeans, he does not like to get/wear any othet shoe but his normal, picky with shirts (does not want buttons or hoods). For the most part I just go with it but sometimes he needs to get dressed nicer. In those cases I start telling him the day before that he needs to dress "fancy". It usually helps.

Yes, she wants to change her clothes 10 times a day, she wants her hair done a certain way. Hailey won't wear jeans because none of them fit her right. She only wears leggings or a dress. She either eats a tank top or long sleeve shirts. She's growing her bangs out so they have to be clipped back. She has a heart attack if any of her fly wayas touch her face!!!

Figured I wasn't alone but it's so frustrating! The jeans started as a comfort thing but now it's that they're not beautiful enough. She's even picky with leggings. Gray is a no go, one crazy pattern is a favorite but another is "not her style".

Then there are the accessories! If I actually get her in a cute outfit she waltzes out of her room in rainbow leg warmers, a neon hair bow in a random spot, or ruffly socks paired with sandals.

I could have written this myself - except instead of 6 my DD is 4.

Today I told her she could go to school naked for all I care. After a HUGE meltdown I won and she went in pants because I was tired of her saying no to everything I took out to wear.

I have all of DDs clothing paired up (pants with a shirt) and folded together. this way DD can pick whatever she wants but she has to wear it as is

I would love to do this but not sure she'd go for it. I think I may give it a try though. She's definitely a free spirit lol.

5yo battles over clothes

My kids have been dressing themselves (at least choosing clothes) since 2 years old because of this!
Sometimes they look like hobos, but it reduces my stress!!

Haha!!!

My son sometimes looks like a bum. He won't even let me brush his hair.

Yesterday, it took me 15 minutes to get him into clothes. He wanted to wear a new button down. I went and got him his new shirt and he started screaming - a new one. Hey Buddy, I am not going to the store at 6:30 am to buy you a new shirt!!!

My 5 yo DD picks her clothes out. She has never owned jeans. She doesn't wear real shorts (only bike shorts).

She wears her dresses over and over. Other than doing laundry when she runs out, I stay out of it.

My almost 2 year old is a nudist. She gets no way in the matter.

Oh... a trick is they can watch 20 minutes of TV in the AM after they get dressed and get ready. A debate or slow down kills the 20 minutes. Very effective.

5yo battles over clothes

I am dealing with this with BOTH of my children.

My 3 yo DD will only wear the few Elsa shirts that she has (I purposely don't buy clothing with characters on them because of this reason. These 2 shirts were gifts that she saw before I could hide and return them) or this one purple short sleeve flower pattern dress. When I say she has drawers overflowing with clothes because I have 3 friends who have the money to spend on name brand clothes for their daughters and they pass them right to DD. Some of these items have tags on them!! She has so much hand me downs and most seasons, I have passed on clothes that she outgrew and NEVER got to wear before the season was over. Yet, every morning it is the same argument and meltdown about the 2 Elsa shirts or the purple flower dress!!!

DS is 6 and won't wear any bottoms that have a button or zipper. He is even starting to push back on pants that are not sweat pant material. He won't wear any pants that have a tight cuff on the bottom either. He literally wore the same 3 pairs of sweats all winter long. He will only wear the same shirts as well (he rotates between 5 of them) My cousins 5 year old son is getting pretty much brand new wardrobe for this coming winter. He looks like a hobo sometimes, because the stains that these items have on them are past trying to get out. Yet his drawers are filled with brand new items.

Re: 5yo battles over clothes

I see that the button, zipper issue is pretty common.
I thought it was just my DD.
When she was younger I really thought she had a sensory issue because she didn't like anything other than sweatpants or leggings or dresses.

But she's almost 7 now and it's still the same.
Glad I am not alone here

That's when the battle over clothes started with DS2. He wanted to assert his independence and most days wanted to pick out everything himself. By 4, he started complaining about pants with buttons or snaps and he definitely prefers athletic pants and sweats over jeans. He also usually wants to wear a shirt with characters or some type of picture on it. He gave me more of a problem from before 2 through 3 than he does now, but I've learned to choose things that he's more likely to want to wear.

DS1 never really cared about what he wore. He also prefers athletic pants, but doesn't like the ones that make noise when he moves around. The only thing we really battled about has been his desire to wear shorts when it's really cold out or not wanting to wear a jacket. I pick and choose my battles with those.

Totally normal. It is when I stopped buying ahead on sale. Dd only wears dresses with no sparkles.

Dd just turned 4. She went through her bday pile of new clothes and told me which ones to return. I can't just buy her clothes or shoes. They need to be discussed. She likes cute and comfy and still loves jeans so I go with it.

I'll just share this....

I took my 5 year old along for her younger sisters doctor appointment. She looked like the textbook definition of a hot mess. Tutu, crazy shirt, insane headband, no matching at all.

My little ones pediatrician is one of the best in the field, as she has some minor health concerns. He took one look at my 5 year and said the following:

"you're really doing a great thing by letting her choose her own clothes. You're giving her control over her body. Parents always try to fight their children for that control, but it's a great lesson to teach them that they have control of their own body and what goes on it, because it translates to them having control over who can touch them. It's especially important for girls."

And here I thought I was just making my life easier, lol.

I don't even go upstairs with my 5 year old to get dressed, she's on her own. I'll tell her warm weather or cold weather and that's about it.

Trying to stay out of the room today. Five minutes in and my 2.5yo came out in two bathing suit bottoms around her waste and nothing else and my 5yo is still in pjs.

I'm sorry, this is something my 3 year old would and has done. My 6 year old has asked to wear his pj's to a party.

I will say, if I could get away with wearing elastic waist pants every day and still look cute I would totally do it!!!!

My daughter is almost 6 and has never even owned a pair of jeans.
