GOP healthcare bill question

What is considered a preexisting condition? Anyone have a resource for this? I was reading yesterday that it can include being the victim of a sexual assault or domestic violence and even having had a c section. I'd love to see a full list.

Re: GOP healthcare bill question

The GOP isn't even releasing the basic text of their "plan". I don't think we'll ever see a complete list of pre-existing conditions. That way, it leaves it up to the insurance companies to decide...

Can someone without being biased tell me what they are tying to get rid of.

And does any current plan or new plan actually address regulating pharmaceutical and medical cost. Maybe health insurance wouldn't cost so much if there wasn't a ridiculous mark up on medicine and medical equipment.

I thought this was a helpful summary.

Re: GOP healthcare bill question

They're still making changes to the bill, and the House bill will probably have more changes, so it's impossible to state exactly what will be in there, but these points have been fairly consistent recently:

https://apnews.com/e712bb2224e24449b3b94d345f67b840/GOP-revives-struggling-health-care-bill-and-plans-House-vote

...
The bill would eliminate tax penalties Obama's law which has clamped down on people who don't buy coverage and it erases tax increases in the Affordable Care Act on higher-earning people and the health industry. It cuts the Medicaid program for low-income people and lets states impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients. It transforms Obama's subsidies for millions buying insurance — largely based on people's incomes and premium costs — into tax credits that rise with consumers' ages.

The measure would retain Obama's requirement that family policies cover grown children until age 26.

But states could get federal waivers freeing insurers from other Obama coverage requirements. With waivers, insurers could charge people with pre-existing illnesses far higher rates than healthy customers, boost prices for older consumers to whatever they wish and ignore the mandate that they cover specified services like pregnancy care.

The bill would block federal payments to Planned Parenthood for a year, considered a triumph by many anti-abortion Republicans.

Obama's overhaul has extended health insurance to around 20 million Americans. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated in March that the GOP bill would end coverage for 24 million people over a decade. That office also said the bill's subsidies would be less generous for many, especially lower-earning and older people not yet 65 and qualifying for Medicare.

A CBO estimate for the cost of latest version of their bill will not be ready before the House conducts its vote.
...
Earlier this week, moderates objected that constituents with pre-existing conditions could effectively be denied coverage by insurers charging them exorbitant premiums. At least a dozen of them said Wednesday they would oppose the legislation, including GOP Reps. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, a moderate leader, Leonard Lance of New Jersey and New York's Dan Donovan.

Thanks I am 100% against them taking away pre-existing policy its absurd any one should think people shouldn't be covered. These people who are OK with it must have some way to luck to guarantee themselves would never be diagnosed with something and then have to switch insurance companies.
Along with charging older people more money. Everyone is going to get old so why anyone would be OK with not having that regulate is beyond me

I do think employers should provide affordable healthcare but would love to know what is considered affordable.

Firefighters though? They have some of the best insurance out there.
They were never denied coverage before ACA .
I'm confused on that.

*Could* be. I'm sure if a firefighter went on their own to get private insurance, they would be denied by many companies. If they went through their union, they would get coverage though.

I think its if you want to change insurance companies for some reason you could be denied it. That's how I take it.

Additional amendments include employers can adopt policies from states that received waivers and offer less benefits like lifetime caps, eliminate out of pocket caps this way it lowers the employer costs.
Plus the amendment that exempted congress from the new rules is going to be voted on a separate bill in this bill that is being voted on today congress still uses Obamacare. So it is good enough for them but not the American people.

Understood but no firefighter or cop is ever going to go outside their union for insurance. They have the best plans out there and they pay nothing for them (or next to nothing).

I'd be concerned if your state accepts the waivers, wouldn't the first people to receive the limited policies be municipal workers?

I know next to nothing about firefighter/police/EMT insurance, but do non-NY personnel in these fields belong to the same unions? Do they have the same insurance plans that they do in NY? If not, they would definitely be susceptible to changes like this.

That's definitely true here in NY, but who knows what it's like in other parts of the country. And what about volunteer fire fighters? I would imagine they would have a hard time getting coverage under the old system

Yeah I was just thinking about that. Like if they find out you are a volunteer firefighter in your free time.

But then I am looking at the list and see Active Military Personal listed too. I can't imagine they were denied healthcare. I feel like we would have heard of that.
Is that list just a "people who POSSIBLY can be denied?"
It's confusing

Re: GOP healthcare bill question

All the GOP really has to do to make almost everyone happy is to replace the title page of the ACA.

If they just replaced "ACA" with "AHCA" in name only, the GOP and trump could celebrate about "repealing and replacing". The die-hard "anti-Obamacare" people would be thrilled that they got rid of that terrible thing, and have something MUCH better in it's place.
People who actually know about the bill would just be like "Uh... they didn't change anything.... so I guess that's better than any other plan they came up with, so I'm happy..."

The GOP is just hell-bent on replacing the ACA with ANYTHING, they don't really care what's in it, who it will hurt, how much it will cost, etc. If they wanted to fix it, they would have sat down with experts, and come up with a plan that is legitimately better than the ACA....

I called my congressman several times and so did many others based on phone lines being busy and mail boxes being full. Our senators will surely vote no so I'm not sure what we can do in NY until it goes back to the house.

GOP healthcare bill question

I'm sick to my stomach. Absolutely sickened.

And I was reading that the congresspeople won't have this abhorrent replacement as their own plan. So it's good enough for everyone else but not for them. Eff them.

Of course. They all know how absolutely horrible this bill is. All they care about is "Repeal and Replace"... screw the voters, but make sure the politicians don't get harmed by their own actions.

This bill basically takes out all of the good parts of the ACA, and makes the bad parts even worse.

This was a rushed vote to both avoid bad press and to make it impossible to organize real resistance. In March, there were big protests outside Rep. Pete King's offices in Massapequa Park. He indicated then that he would not vote for the bill. He just voted "yes" two hours ago.

I've been feeling the same as you -- what are we to do now?! I just read on another site that perhaps the most effective thing we can do when it comes to swing Republican districts is to donate for the Democratic candidates and local resistance organizations within those districts, wherever they may be, and then call those representatives' offices and explain to them what we've done and that we intend to continue to help those candidates as long as bills and votes continue to disenfranchise everyone but the super wealthy. (A good resource for this is swingleft.org.)
