Is there anyway to save on flights to Hawaii?

We want to go in Feb maybe March for my SIL's military retirement. She is waiting for her date. Last time we will ever get the chance to go without having to pay for hotels. We have never been. It will be dh, me, dd and I will do lap for the 1 year old as I can't justify spending $950 for a 1 year old.

Any tips?

Hawaiian airlines and Alaska airlines used to have awesome credit cards deals with great mileage bonuses for sign up. I would look into those.

Get the Delta Amex card. You get a hefty bonus upon signing up. We use it to pay for everything so between that and regular miles from business travel, we get a ton of miles!

February and march are high for Hawaii. It's peak season for them. Play around with your dates. Hawaiian airlines partners with jet blue. Alaska partners with American and virgin. Don't go crazy trying to find round trip. We will often fly one airline there and another back.

The trip we are taking next week we are flying jet blue to vegas. Then Hawaiian for the second and third leg. On the way home we are flying Hawaiian to LA and then Delta to NY.

Consider flying to the west coast and spending a night. That sometimes works out to be cheaper than flying straight through and will give you a chance to get used to the time difference a little.

I would reconsider the lap child though. It's a LONG flight. And a 5 or 6 hour time difference (5 in the winter) and it's a difficult trip from the east coast. Or consider doing the lap child for only one leg of the trip.

Thank you. My mil offered to pay half the cost for our flights and I understand the issue with the lap child not something I want to do but this trip will coincide with a big move we are doing around the same time. We wouldn't even be going but my fil passed last year and my dh really wants us to be there to support his sister. We have to be very budget conscious though so swinging a 4th seat may be really tough.

If you can be even a little flexible on dates, you should be able to do better than $950, although like another poster said that's a peak time.

I use kayak a lot. They have easy search features and the percentage certainty that you should buy at that time which I have found to be accurate in hindsight.

On a different note, please please buy a seat for your child. Mill mentioned comfort but it's also safety. You will be going 600 miles an hour at 35,000 feet for almost 12 hours. She should have a seat with the proper restraints in case of an emergency or even just rough turbulence.

I would not do lap child for that long of a long flight. I may do it for 3-4 hours max. Unfortunately tickets to Hawaii are pricey, try to see if you can be flexible with days/times you are leaving. When I flew to Hawaii we did stop on the west coast and that kind of broke it up a bit. Although I know Hawaiian does have flights nonstop from NY.

I just went to Hawaii on a baby moon, and did a direct flight from NY to Honolulu. It's a LONG flight. When we left the hotel (where we have stayed a couple other times) everyone was like "and next time you come back we can't wait to see the baby!" and all I thought was "nope, not happening unless we decide to wait until the kid is old enough to need his own seat or we decide we want to pay for another seat." I could not imagine holding a 1 year old for that long, even switching between myself and my husband.

Hawaiian does have one nonstop a day from JFK to Honolulu - I am a big fan of the direct flight - even though it's long.

The other option we do a lot is take a short flight to another east coast city - Delta has a nonstop from Atlanta to Honolulu. We scored first class seats on that once that were cheaper than the extra comfort seats on Hawaiian.

Check flights out of Newark - they tend to be a little cheaper.

Also, if you can be flexible with your days, try to leave NY Tuesday - Thursday and fly home from Hawaii Sunday - Thursday. Airlines figure a lot of people go on their honeymoons so Saturday, Sunday, Monday are expensive to fly there. Coming home, you lose a day so flights are most expensive Friday and Saturday.

Look at stopover cities you wouldn't think to look at: Salt Lake City, Denver, Dallas, etc.

United has a non stop too out of Newark to Honolulu.

Just want to say we flew to Hawaii when my daughter was around 1 yr as a lap child. It wasn't an issue.

She was bf so that helped and she slept a lot of the time. With a non-difficult baby it is doable.

Since she isn't born yet we don't know how she is going to be. We will just have to see.

Wait and shop around. If you have a Saturday night stay and your outbound is on a ridiculously early tues or weds morning, you may be able to get them cheaper.
Set some limits. Will you spend a night in an airport hotel in LA/San Francisco? What is the longest layover you're willing to do?
I'd call a travel agent. They can see into inventory on actual combinations of flights better than we can online.
Good luck!

I'd also get Hopper or Skyscanner. That's how I booked our flights for Turks and Caicos for this summer. U can find out who has the best prices at different times and depending on the season. Also whenever there are changes in prices whether they go up or down, they'll immediately notify u.
