Accuracy of DNA tests?
So a cousin on my mom's side did a DNA test. My mom's side is, or we thought, 100% Italian.
Anyway, this cousin had an Italian mother and Polish father. I'm connected to this cousin by the Italian mother (my grandfather's sister). On his test he got the standard DNA for the Polish side- Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Finland. No surprise there.
But on the Italian side he got a quarter southern Italian/ Greek (I would expect Greek) and then a quarter Middle Eastern (Syria, Iraq, and Israel, and some from India).
For those Italians on this board, did you get Middle Eastern results? Not that there is anything wrong with it, I just would not have expected that.

YES! I did and so did my sister (obviously) My mom always said she was Sicilian and French (my dads family is from Naples) but when we did the DNA tests, 0 french came up. We were 79% Italian/Greek (obviously Italian) 9% Caucasus and 6% Middle East.
After some back and forth with my mom, she said it may be possible her grandmother was Tunisian and not French. She spoke French but that is a language spoken in Tunisia. My great grandparents met and married in Sicily. My mom is 77 and it's hard to get facts from her these days. So, we are going with that lol

Accuracy of DNA tests?
Yes, I do think it's accurate. I knew I was mostly Italian with German, Czech, and polish mixed in and that's what came up. Yes, my mom came up middle eastern mixed in which was surprising so I have that too. She obviously came up as definitely my mother bc of how many matches of DNA strands. Some distant relatives came up too and the last names matched with names that are from way back in my family history. Really cool to see and you can even contact those people!!
My husband insists he must be 100% Italian (which is impossible for anyone) so I'm going to have a good laugh when his results come back.

Ha, yeah, I had a good laugh with that with my mom. My father is Polish-American and she is Italian-American. She used to do Polish jokes when I was young to tease my dad. I also heard lots of "I'm 100% Italian" growing up (not that there is anything wrong with that).
I think I'll send her my recipe for falafel and hummus tomorrow as a joke.

Accuracy of DNA tests?
I haven't had it done, but absolutely possible and common! I think most of us Italians had Middle Eastern in us, were all from the Mediterranean. In fact there is a group that is trying to have Mediterranean be it's own classification, like Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian, etc...and it would include people from Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Syria, Iraq, etc. I would be all for that. My mom's first cousin who thinks he's 100% Italian and I say thinks because none of us are 100% anything, is totally racially profiled all the time when he flies. He flies very often , like 2x a week, and is always pulled because he looks very Middle Eastern as opposed to Italian I guess. So I definitely believe my family has that mixed in us.

Accuracy of DNA tests?
I think they are accurate. People are almost never 100% one thing.

Considering Italy's history that sounds about accurate.
