CHANDIGARH, India — It was a long journey for Indian snowshoe champion Tanveer Hussain and his team manager to the World Snowshoe Championships in Saranac Lake, N.Y., last weekend.
The two men were initially denied visas to travel to the United States in the chaotic days following the Trump administration’s travel ban. The reasons for the rejections remain unclear — India is not among the seven countries named in Trump’s executive order — but after the intervention of Saranac Lake’s mayor and the office of Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi reversed its decision.
Hussain and team manager Abid Khan arrived Feb. 23 in the bucolic Adirondacks town, which had been following their visa ordeal and extended them a hero’s welcome. Locals offered congratulations and free lodging at an inn that in the snow looked like a “fairy tale scene from a movie,” Khan said in a Facebook post.
The “fairy tale” was shattered Wednesday when Hussain, 24, was arrested and charged with felony sexual abuse and child welfare endangerment, police said.
The parents of the 12-year-old girl who was allegedly involved said the incident happened Monday, after the three-day snowshoe competition, and reported it to local authorities.
Chief Charles A. Potthast Jr. of the Saranac Lake Village police force said the girl was playing pool Monday afternoon with other young people at the inn where Hussain was staying.
“There was a moment when the two were alone, and that’s when the incident occurred,” Potthast said. The girl told police that there was a “passionate kiss” and that Hussain touched her in an intimate area on top of her clothing.
Hussain remains jailed on $10,000 bond. Khan said the athlete told him that he did nothing wrong.
Muddasir Mir, president of the SnowShoe Federation of India, said the next court hearing is set for Monday. “It’s an unfortunate situation, both for the community there in the U.S. who supported us and the federation,” Mir said. “We have full faith in the American law, and as there is a court proceeding going on, that is going to be my only comment.”
Hussain hails from the Indian side of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, which is predominantly Muslim. He placed in the top 50 at the World Snowshoe Championships last year in Italy, Mir said, but failed to place in the top 100 this year.
Hussain’s brother, Yunus Ali, said the family has not been able to speak to Hussain since the arrest.
“In Kashmir, we have a tradition of showing love to children. We hug and kiss a child here, and our society doesn’t see it as a crime,” he said.
Hussain and Khan said they were indirect victims of the U.S. travel ban when their first attempt to procure visas was turned down in late January, the first business day after the ban was put in place. Khan told the BBC that an employee at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi said they were being rejected because of “current policy.”
U.S. officials said at the time that the denials were not connected to the travel ban. The embassy in New Delhi had no comment.
Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau, a key supporter of the men, said in a statement that the community was “understandably shocked” by the allegations against Hussain.
Mir had said that the visas would not have been issued without the “personal efforts” of Schumer and New York’s other Democratic senator, Kirsten Gillibrand. On Feb. 25, Schumer celebrated Hussain’s “rock star” welcome in a Facebook post, saying that the United States is “still a country that welcomes athletes from across the globe to compete in our stadiums, our snow-covered fields and everywhere in between.”
A spokesman for Schumer said the senator helped with the visa process at the request of Saranac Lake and described the charges against Hussain as “extremely troubling.”
A spokesman for Gillibrand said the senator thinks the charges are “extremely serious.”
During their time in Saranac Lake, Hussein and his coach were honored with a special reception by the mayor and gave a talk about Kashmir at Saranac Lake Middle School, where students had waged a letter-writing campaign on their behalf. “Pack your bags. Next year you are coming to Kashmir,” Hussain told them, according to one of Khan’s Facebook posts.

Edited to add,
I'm having a hard time adding the link but I posted it above. It was in the Washington Post.

That is unfortunate.

However, he is in jail and they said he will cooperate with the legal proceedings. Innocent until proven guilty, remember?

This is not a terrorist.

Not sure your motivation in posting about this one random case? There are plenty of ironic, outrageous and horrifying things that GOP senators are a part of. It's too much list and certainly to post.

Agree. What a disgusting POS. But there are plenty of people like him right here non immigrants and immigrants alike

Allowing him entry has nothing to do with it.

I didn't say anything about him being a terrorist. What I will say is that they shouldn't have pulled ANY strings and fast passed his visa especially since no one knew why the visa was initially denied. Had proper vetting been done this 12 year old child might not have been sexually abused.

Schumer was also using this as a photo op after he did it, which coincided with the travel ban. He posted on his FB about how we are "still" a country that welcomes people with open arms. That post seems to have disappeared from his Facebook but there are pictures of it online.

Tell that to the 12 year old girl and her family. His visa was initially denied and the reasons aren't clear per the above article posted, and numerous others I read. Schumer and Gillibrand got it pushed through.

Sorry, the implication is that this is a brown skinned man and the air of fear of "terrorist" is real. Deny all you want. Maybe you don't feel that way, but that is absolutely part of the underlying issue.

The strings were pulled IMO because their visas were denied for some unclear reason related to the "travel ban". Even though India is not on the banned countries list. That is fundamentally unfair. So, that's why. And I am sure that Schumer was going for a photo op, too. He's a politician, to be sure.

Tangentially, I also have a problem with you saying this girl WAS sexually abused. The guy is ACCUSED of sexual abuse and child welfare endangerment. As I said in my original post, innocent until proven guilty.

I really don't care what color he is, what religion he is or what country he is from. My issue is that someone should have found out why the visa was denied. It wasn't that the visa was being held up on a waiting list or stuck with red tape. It was actually denied....and the denial being about the travel ban is your opinion only. The above article stated that the two athletes stated that, but that US officials said the denials were not connected to the ban. Also,(even as you state),India wasn't part of the ban. But, it made good PR for Schumer to use this towards his agenda, without taking time to find out why the denial and properly vetting these men. FWIW, I would also feel the same way if a republican did something this stupid..Though 20 other people probably would've posted the article and commented on it first.

What is also pretty scary is the comment from his brother. He stated "In Kashmir, we have a tradition of showing love to children. We hug and kiss and our society doesn't see that as a crime."
I don't believe that about Kashmir for a minute! It's quite disturbing that this was his response. He never stated " He would never do that".Chat Icon

So the problem is not that Schumer and Gillibrand screwed up , it's that I am saying that this 12 year old child WAS sexually abused? That I am actually believing the victim of sexual abuse who happens to be a child or for your sake "the alleged" child victim? I can't even believe I am reading that on this forum.

So are you saying this 12 year old child is lying?

I am not saying one way or the other if fast passing the visa was wrong.

I am just wondering do you think that waiting it out would have made people discover he might be a rapist. Does he have a criminal record?

What kind of screening do they do before letting someone in.

This is very unfortunate it happened.

Agreed. I doubt there is anything out of the ordinary about what the senators did. Everyone was pulling for this guy to be allowed to attend, including local middle schoolers who wrote letters. I doubt there was anything on his record so they had no way of knowing this is where it could end up. It's a very serious situation and hopefully it is handled appropriately.

Because a rape victim has never lied before? He is innocent until proven guilty.

True - but no matter how you slice it - even if she "consented" she is still a sexual assault victim - she is 12 - well under the legal age of consent.

No. I'm saying what I said-- he is innocent until proven guilty. It's called the law. I can't believe we need to explain this to you.

There isn't enough information to point fingers here. Let's see what information comes out. On BBC, I read that his visa was denied based on the current immigration policies. At this time, your angst towards Schumer and Gillenbrand seems misplaced but only time will tell.

Thank you for more articulately expressing what I'm feeling about this post and story. I also read his visa was originally denied because of the travel ban.

Who knows what the reason is for him being denied. But since he WAS denied don't we all have the right for any politician to look into the whys before they help push to get a visa pushed through? The US officials are saying it WASN'T the ban. It makes sense that it wasn't because as we all know, India wasn't a part of it. But regardless, had he not gotten fast passed he probably wouldn't have been able to come last weekend. Therefore this "alleged" ,(rolls eyes), incident wouldn't have happened.

You don't need to explain the law to me. I've also been on this board long enough to know that I can pretty much bet that if someone involved in the RNC, let's say, were involved in a sexual assault on a 12 year old, he wouldn't be "innocent until proven guilty". Very sad for this child.

I seriously can't believe that some on this board full of women ,who supposedly are all about women's and children's rights and marches, etc., are even trying to downplay this "alleged" incident. If this had been anyone else, he'd be ripped apart right now.

I'm sorry, but I agree. I don't support this travel ban in any way shape or form and I do think this was posted in a "see what happens when you let all of THOSE people into our country" sort of way, but to try to downplay the allegations to suit your cause is ridiculous. Yes, innocent until proven guilty, but come on. This is why so many rapes and sexual assaults go unreported- because there seems to be a knee jerk reaction to not believe the victim or to blame the victim. Please, we're better than this.

ETA: All that being said, this does not make the travel ban okay or prove that it's needed.

Not intended to downplay the alleged crime, the allegations are that he tried to kiss her and touched her over her clothing.

unless it comes back that he has a criminal record and/or has been accused or rape before there is no way anyone would know that this happened.
He could have been let in without fast tracking the visa. Point is nothing would have stopped this you can't predict how people will act.

You can not blame anyone about this but the actual person who did it.

No doubt and I agree completely with you. For me, I am upset about incidents like this and I would be outraged if it were worse. That's just my perspective.
