Thanksgiving and politics
I am **hoping** it doesn't come up. Although, I know how the people that will be at my house for Thanksgiving voted and its the same as how I voted but differs from my DH. If it does come up, I am pretty sure we will have a civilized conversation about it. My DH doesn't really engage in argumentative conversations so he'll state his opinion and move on.

If we were heading to my family's Thanksgiving, I might be dreading it slightly since I have different views than my immediate family. We try not to talk a lot about politics due to this.
We are heading to my ILs and I know we all voted for the same person so I am not too concerned.

We have one family member who completely went rogue 
It's been really hard honestly.
I kind of said that I do not want to discuss politics at all but I'm sure it'll come up.
That's sort of why I asked for drink recipes here the other day

I love my family but I am grateful we won't be spending Thanksgiving with them this year - because they all voted differently from my DH and while he would not start a discussion, he will defend his position to the death and someone is bound to say something.
We are going to be with my ILs who never vote so it's not even an issue.
December on the other hand will be very interesting. My sister, who is ultra-liberal, is coming to visit and she and DH have already been getting into it on Facebook.

I already argued badly with a cousin I usually see at Thanksgiving. This year though they aren't hosting because his mother had knee surgery and is in a cast. And they won't be coming to us. So I don't HAVE to see them. But they are local so I'll probably stop in. At least I have a baby that we can talk about instead of this shitshow.

I am hosting. I am going to change the subject if it comes up. My sister is SUPER conservative. My nephew and I are 10 years apart and he is SUPER liberal. My Niece is a year younger than my nephew and is more like my sister. DH is independent and you guys know where I am at. My inlaws are conservative and my youngest nephew who is 18 doesn't care. It won't be for a good discussion and I want no part of it.

Most of my ILs would be fine (no matter who they voted for), but I have one BIL who will make it very difficult for everyone. He has always been like that. Every time I have seen him in the past 8 years, he has spent a good amount of time bashing Obama. I know he will be over the top in terms of rhetoric, and he won't know when to stop.
DH and I have had a rough year, so we just want a quiet holiday. We decided to stay home.

And just a quick note, since I know people IRL doing it...If you are really not going to a particular relative for Thanksgiving because you don't like who they voted for, which IMO is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of, but if that's your plan, can I just ask that you think long and hard about it? If you are okay with never seeing them again, then fine, but you never know who might not be at Thanksgiving next yera because they are dead....I never expected last Thanksgiving that my grandma wouldn't be at this one.

I'm an atheist and yet I still go every year to xmas with my family of which half think I'm going to hell.
Haven't we learned from 9/11 to cherish time with those we love. A president sits for 4yrs to 8yrs tops. How long have you been friends or family? Is it worth it?

Nah. We love it! We are a very loud and politically charged lot, LOL. Almost every family gathering is a political debate. It has been that way since we were kids. We are always respectful though and understand that we come at things with our own POV's. Mostly it's my Dad, my Mom is smart and keeps most her opinions to herself. I always tell my Dad it's his fault for raising independent, free thinking daughters.

My views are mine, my husband's are his, and everyone else's views belong to them.
Thanksgiving dinner is about celebrating family and togetherness, all that we are thankful for, not for causing a divide.

I think some of the people we'll be spending the day with have a different view than mine. I plan to not discuss and if anyone tries to make it a thing, my plan it to leave the room.
But if I knew someone who was going to just be purposefully rude and offensive, yeah, I'd say never mind.

Im dreading it because dh and I are the only Democrats in the bunch. Its always bad for us but at this year is just awful. I've talked to dh and I said you and I will keep our opinions to ourselves since we're out nunbered.

I know two people who say they are doing this...one a friend who doesn't agree with her brother, another is a co-worker. Very sad IMO.

This may be a little bossy and dictatorial but i have instituted a no politics talk rule at Thanksgiving day at my house. I love Thanksgiving and it will be 22 of us and I would like to enjoy the one day when everyone should be thankful.

my entire extended family is like this... at every single family gathering!
we talk over one another, yell, laugh, and tell each other that the other is an idiot for not seeing it our way... blah, blah, blah... then you pass the massed potatoes.
the liberals blame the conservatives, the conservatives blame the liberals... then we pass dessert around.
