Has anyone's young infant (under 3 months) gotten sick?

DS (3) had a nasty virus that turned into pneumonia last week. He got all of us sick - DH got it pretty bad, I've so far skated by wth a sore throat, and now DD (7.5 weeks) is sick. She is super congested and has a cough, and on and off is running a low grade fever (between 100.4-100.8). Spoke to ped last night when fever started, went to PM Peds, she was checked. No signs of infection, sent home. Spoke to ped this morning, determined it's just a cold/mild virus, nothing we can do but saline drops, steam, keep bfing and watch her.

She seems mostly okay, not lethargic, not especially fussy, nursing fine. No fever all day. About an hour ago she felt a bit warm again - took her temp and she's hovering around 100.3-100.4. She's sleeping now (it's the normal time that she goes to sleep for her long stretch). But I just feel very nervous. DS was never sick this young. I've been so laid back with DD and now I feel like maybe I'm overlooking something or being TOO easygoing.

Has anyone gone through a cold/virus with their very young infant? How long did it last, how did you manage it, etc? Thanks!

Has anyone's young infant (under 3 months) gotten sick?

DS2 had a virus when he was 2 months old. I took him to the doctor after he had a 103 fever and he was sent to the er. We spent the day and then he was sent home. We went back the next day for a recheck and spent the day again. Since then, every time he gets stuck, he spikes a super high fever (he's spent the last 2 days hovering a little above 104, spent his first birthday at 103). He was sent to the er because he was lethargic, not eating, and they couldn't find anything else wrong with him (no ear infectio, red throat, swollen anything, etc). I think that you should call the doctor again in the morning if she's still fussy and express your concern. I would feel better if my ped looked at my kids as opposed to a pediatric center (not saying they're not qualified because i love those centers, but you'll ultimately be following up with your ped anyway). Good luck!

No advice, but this is my fear with a fall baby. Obviously it's impractical with 2 to keep them isolated, but I get so nervous.

On a positive note though, hopefully she's fine, and you're so close to that 2 month mark that hopefully they can just monitor things.

Thing is, she's NOT fussy. She's eating fine, smiling, gurgling, pretty much her normal self other thanthe cough and congestion.

If her temp is a bit high still during the night/AM though I do plan to call and take her in to our ped.

Yeah, if she's not acting strange, I wouldn't be as concerned.

Ugh sick babies are the worst! Sorry you have to go through it. My daughter had a fever at 6 weeks. It was over 100.4 so the ped had me bring her in. They checked her out and didn't see anything out of the ordinary besides the fever, ears.throat were clear, etc. DD would go between being lethargic and inconsolably crying and barely nursing so they sent us to the ER. Because she was only 6 weeks, they wanted blood and urine cultures, plus spinal tap. It was absolutely terrifying and I get anxious just thinking about it now, 2 years later. She was admitted and kept for 3 days on IV antibiotics. Her 48 hour cultures came back clear so they said it was probably viral. I was a wreck and ended up with shingles the day after we were released from the hospital...I guess from the stress. It was absolute hell and beyond scary but she is now a perfectly healthy 2.5 year old Chat Icon

Yes.
It stinks... but as long as they are not lethargic & eating & fever is controllable... not much you can do.

My DS had a cold at about 7 weeks. He didn't have a fever just a stuffy nose.

It is a lot harder to keep DC 2 healthy!

DS 2 came down with a stomach virus at 2 weeks old (thanks to DS 1). It was so stressful!

Me second had a 100.4 fever at 5 weeks, wound up in the ER, spinal tap, hospital admission, IV antibiotics, whole 9. It sounds like you've avoided that, so that's a good thing. Definitely no fun. I've also had newborns avoid catching illness going around the house, so you just never know.

Yes. DS2 developed a virus/fever at 3 weeks old and had to be hospitalized for 3 nights. The spinal tap and IVs were just awful. On top of that, just as he was being discharged I wound up catching the sickness and had a 104 fever! To be honest, I kind of blocked out many of those memories because it was a super scary stressful time for me but I think the fever finally broke on day 4. He was lethargic and mildly grumpy during that time but otherwise everything wound up being fine. Hope you all feel better soon!

DD was sick when young, but not quite that young. Her fever was much higher - around 103-104. Our ped had me bring her in every other day just to make sure she was ok. I think it was more for my own peace of mind, but I didn't mind doing it, particularly b/c her fever was so high.

My DS was 7 weeks and had a 100.7 fever, I had to stay in the hospital for 48 hours with him. I was under the impression if a baby under 2 months has a fever over 100.4, they must go to the ER for monitoring.

That's what I thought, too, but when I called my ped Saturday night she sent us to PM peds to check first. When we got there, DD's temp was normal. She hasn't had a fever since so at the very least I'm grateful we didn't have to go to the hospital.

DS was 2 weeks old and caught what my 2 year old had...fever, cold, cough. Ped made us go to the ER since he was so young. We were there for 5 days...did blood work..spinal tap..nebulizer...he ended up having RSV. It was so scary at the time but we got through it.

So scary and stressful when infants are sick! Hope baby feels better soon!!

When my daughter was 2 weeks she got RSV, pneumonia, and had a collapsed lung. DD 1 had a cold and I had it too. Started as slight congestion, in,less than 24 hours she was hospitalized be she was barely breathing and turning grey. She was intubated and we were in the hospital for 2 weeks.
If she doesn't seem to be getting better push for a rsv swab. Our pulmologist said he's seeing kids in the hospital already. This is all extreme but just keep an eye.

RSV was the first thing to pop into my head, too.

When DS was 3 months old he has a 'bad cold' and was put on cough medicine..he was extremely congested and coughing but had no fever and was eating. After a few days on the cough medicine, the fever appeared and we went back to the pediatrician. He ended up being hospitalized for 2 days for RSV. Definitely ask for the swab, if only for peace of mind.

Re: Has anyone's young infant (under 3 months) gotten sick?

We went back to the doctor today. No fever, lungs and chest are clear, congestion is improving and she's just got a cough now. They tested for RSV and assume that's it but he said with no fever and she's eating and happy then there's not much else to do.

I'm hopeful she's at the tail end of this now.
